OK gurus, after seeing a bloke clean up on pinkies while my live squid was left unmolested, I need some help with SP for snapper.

Fishing on average 10m deep and casting and retriving around small structure from the kayak.
I see theres a multitude of different stuff on the tackle shop shelves so ive got a few questions?

  • what size head and shape would i need?

  • what jig heads have strong hooks?

  • for the plastics them selves are any shapes, colour, brand better that others?

  • advice on working the things would be appreciated

Here's about as much as I know.

what size head and shape would i need?
1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 jig heads with hooks that get to about halfway down the plastic.
These ranges will get you down to the strike zone in different drift speeds,

what jig heads have strong hooks?
TT jigs work well for me.

for the plastics them selves are any shapes, colour, brand better that others?
4 to 6 inch in length. Both paddle tails, grub tails and jerk shads work well. I'm a fan of the Zmans as they are tough as and last better.
Gulps do have good scents but get destroyed by wrasse and McCathy's work well.
I'm trialling some of the "Glow" range in low light with some success. The theory being that they are a "sight" based lure.

advice on working the things would be appreciated
Jerk Shard are just that. Designed to be jerked around and then sink back down.
Paddletails and grub tails have their action in the tail. They can be worked from a slow retrieve to a lift and drop.
They can also be just left hanging out the back while you work a 2nd rod.

Rob dulson ,the anchor man .
Kiwi don't do it walk away from the plastic's ,stay away from the evil contraption,s they are the work of the devil !!!! welcome to the SP club NOW you will start catching!!! Pretty much everything that lefty said ,I tend to anchor up and burley ,fish two rod's one with a light jig on [3/5 gram ] cast out and left in the rod holder [1/2 drag ]this is then drifting down in the burley trail ,the next rod is then cast out heavy-er jig say 1/8 1/4 1/2 oz this then get's down quicker ,once it's down work it back ,mix your style's lift-n drop to slow retrieve or flat strap ,you can usually get two or three cast's in before the light rod is getting molested by S**t fish ,THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ,is confidence in your color any one you like but have confidence in it ,your a fly guru the same rule's apply match the hatch ,or bright day bright lure ,my two go to are 5in glo white 5in pink shine [glo] interestingly last outing had a rod out with a mullie on a snell rig for a mate ,burley was mullie's no hit,s mine five pink's ,well mate enjoy will take you out when this weather settle's .

I only use them land based. Saying that I have caught a snapper on a sp land based :). I used a gulp jigging grub and is the lift and wind technique.

Storage is the main thing. F**k leaving them in the bags. They all leak. If they are gulp get the container. It's well worth it.

Plastics are awesome mate. I hardly buy bait anymore. I have some gulp 2inch worms, pilchards, and 6 inch worms that I trim down. I also have Z man 2" grubs, and squidgy fish and wrigglers. I use the worms on a whiting rig to catch herring or whiting and use live bait for big fish. Blowfish are a huge problem though. They cost me lots of money when chasing bait.

To add a silly question to this, what would be a cheap rod to start with if I want to learn to jig on SP
Technology, be good if it works

the $80 dollar BCF combo. its a sahara/ssF rod (code 702SP - basically the catana rod) with the 2500 seinna rod. Or look for the 100 combo same rod and reel with the rod now called a Catana.

Dropshots, Raiders, Flueger Trions anything with a fast (stiff feel) action.
If mono use low stretch. Braid to Flouro leader works better for me.

A few personal things I can add there bloke, but it's pretty much all been said really...
Making your own jigheads will give you much better results I reckon, and I'm a huge believer in fluoro green jighead or at least a fluoro bead in front of your jighead.
Don't underestimate the benefit of that goo you rub onto your plastics too, even better if that's fluoro as well, leaves a nice cloud coming off your plastic that really gives the impression of a wounded/bleeding fish.
In colder weather a thermos of hot water will be a bonus...for placing your softy into for a few minutes! Makes it lots more flexible and wiggly, especially good for them tougher plastics like McCarthys etc.
For pinkys I like working 2 plastics on the one rod... ;) Found it improved the strike rate, just make sure your outfit can handle 2 pinkys at once just in case it happens.
A personal thing but I like a swivel between jighead and hook...for hook I liked an 8/0 and remember when placing your hook that pinkys swallow head first (this is where the swivel really helped).
Dawn and dusk, colours white or yellow.
I think that's all I got...good luck mate.
