3pc rods

Hi there,

I've been doing a lot of beach fishing lately and I've been using a 2 piece 12ft rod. I've been looking at getting myself a 13 or 14ft rod but space limitations mean that if I get a rod this big it's going to need to be 3 piece. Does anyone use a 3 piece surf rod and if so are there any problems you've come across with them? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on a make and model for this type of rod?

Cheers.

If you get a good brand they are just as tough as a single piece rod nowadays. I've used em for some big stuff in the past and not had a problem, except when using cheaper brand 3 pc rods...had a snap and a ferrule failure on cheapys.
Can't honestly recommend a particular rod as I wouldn't consider myself qualified to do so...I'll leave that to the tackle guru's.

Hey mate,
I have an Okuma X-Factor 15' 5-10kg 3 piece I don't use much. I might be convinced into selling it. It's in great nick. Cost $180 new.
Where are you fishing that needs a 13 - 14' rod?

If you are fishing heavy then try the Sensor Surf 14' 8-15kg, they are an awesome range of rods in the $200 - $300 price bracket, the 14' is about $289 +del from Ray n Anne's. I own the 10' and the 12' and rave about them. You could ask Campbells to order one in.
For most beach fishing in WA metro and surrounds 12' 2 piece is plenty and besides tailor, mulloway and even sharks come in fairly close. You fishing South Coast or Mid-West swells? Is it for casting distance or getting above the swells?

The only 3 piece I got annoyed with is my Mexican Raider 9' travel 5-8kg in which the weight of the lure turns the top section sometimes when casting, unless you really jam the ferule together. Still a great rod for the price overall.
Anyway, PM if you are interested in looking at my Okuma, lots of members have the smaller versions of this rod and rave about them so they are good.
Hope all that helps.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Hixy, I might be interested in the okuma. Where are you (NOR???...... Sorry I’ve only been in WA from Melbourne for a couple of years)?

I suppose there really is no ‘need’ for a rod this big; it’s more of a want. I’ve only got back into fishing in the last 6 months after moving over here and I’d like to get a bit more casting distance. I’m working on technique at the moment but I’ll take any advantage I can get. I mostly fish Wyadup/Injidup, Moses, Contos and get up to Myalup/Buffalo area occasionally. I’m still in discovery mode. The fishing opportunities over here compared to Melbourne are absolutely fantastic.

I’ll take a look at the sensor surf. I’ve had a look at the Penn Prevail, Shimano Aeroweave and Abu Garcia Veritas, which all fit the bill, but I’m still a bit overwhelmed with the amount of choice available.

Gavin there are not many places you need a rod like this in my opinion. My 10 foot rod casts far enough at most beaches and then the 12 foot rod does the rest. Remember you don't need to cast as far as possible. Most of the times the gutter is just a lob away.

Agreed. 10' for lures, baitcasting and small sinker rigs with mulies. 12' for a set bait or livies.

Saying that the swells are a bit bigger down that way and you may want to get some line above the breakers.

If you want to try my 15' that's fine. I'd let it go for a good price for a forum member.

Those Wyadup rocks are awesome I reckon, I'd fish 9 and 10' there. Why bother with the beach when you have such a great platform. Rock safety all the way of course!

For casting distance, go braid, good 10-12' rod and a reasonable reel and you'll cast way further than the old boys with their Uglies and there spinfisher 850ss boat anchor reels.

NOR = North of River, where the best people in Perth live!

Thanks Shiggins.

You're right I probably don't need to cast that far, but as with the other two hobbies in my life, computers and guitar playing, I unfortunately suffer from a severe form of GAS, Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I attended a support group for a while but it didn't help. :-/

Hixy, unfortunately the finance minister has banned me from rock fishing at the moment, but she has a bad habit of answering her phone while she's driving. I've told her that the next time she does it I'm heading to Wyadup rocks for the day. I keep ringing her while she's driving, but unfortunately it must have worked because she never answers me.

I'll whip you a pm and we can hopefully work something out with the okuma.

Cheers.

Sorry to buck the trend, but a longer rod would be perfect for South West beach fishing where you encounter a lot more swell. Can't help with comparisons as the only 3 piece I've used is my 14 ft Posieden Bantam, but I definately get more casting distance out of it, and it's good for keeping the line clear of the surf/shorebreak. It's a heavier casting sort of rod, so it get's used mainly on the south coast with bait, and comes with 3 interchangeable tip sections for different casting weights. I use the lighter ones on Skippy/Tailor/Salmon with smaller baits and sinkers, and the heavier tip casting big grapnels when ther's a lot of water movement or I'm anchoring big baits for sharks. Personally I think anything over 10 foot for lure work is just hard work, but thats where a lighter 9 footer comes into it for me.

I'm just not a fan of anything over 12 foot. I can understand the need to get the line above the high swell so your bait isnt getting pulled around or even weed catching your line in the waves but I don't fish that large swell. One day I might get into a
Situation and ill think I wish I had a 14 foot rod. Lol.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I was down at Moses rock yesterday fishing from the beach and the swell was pretty big so I'm hoping the new rod will make things a little easier.

I only have one 3 piece rod and it is a Rovex AU123 rated at 15kg - pretty good for a 12' rod and it is my go to rod on the rocks.

I have a 13' rebuilt 8 wrap butterworth and a 14' snyder 6102 for heavy surf - and both are one piece.

The 14' synder is 30 years old and I think it is starting to go soft on me as the casting is dropping away- or maybe it is coz I am just getting old....lol
