A mate of mine is going to work in Canada for 3 months and he rang and asked if I'd store his boat at home and give it a few runs while he's away. This things a great little 3.85m tinny with a 30hp merc on it with all the fruit to make life enjoyable. Ill be out chasing squid, kg's and everything else over the winter months in this things often as I can. I Love a bit of tinny action, easy and affordable solo missions as opposed to running the big girl. Looks like i might have to join you one night Danny, on a pinky hunt. This boats had some great fish on it, so I hope I can carry on the good form. |

Perfect size to head out the side/back of Rotto, 30hp merc against 30hp Tohatsu (cheap merc anyway) should be good fun. When do you get it Tones, I'll definitely call you, let you know when we can have a tinny comp. I do make up my mind just on the spur of the moment though and usually only start a fishing trip about 5-6pm. This is to stop too many people seeing where I go, especially if I stay in close. Just start fishing when most others are going home and sometimes if it goes good come back just as everyone else is going out otherwise just stay a little longer. Still haven't made my mind up about this weekend yet either but its not looking too flash for a tinny, especially if I want to go out past Garden Island. |

I love the good old tinny. Had a 395 dart with a 25 merc, would do 48kph solo and was light enough to just pull up the beach. Now have a 4.5 hornet with a 40 yammy which gets me just about anywhere. Nothing better then pulling up at the ramp in a tinny with better fish than the guys in the big boats Edited by TravGrundy, Jun 1 2013, 08:56 AM.

Far out 48kph is fast for a 25hp, I do around 40kph according to my gps with a 40hp. (correction 30hp)I do have a fair bit of weight with gear and ice though, will have to try it out proper one day with nothing in it. Yeah isn't it great at the ramp showing the big boats up. "Yeah got a feed" Then pull out a couple of big ones, and see the suprise on some of them aye. Changing subject it doesn't look quite as windy as predicted, at least not from where I am at home. Wonder what its like on the water. I've sort of decided to stay home cause I'm sick of the bumpy wet ride back in I get in the tinny with the easterlies. Edited by SnappaDan, Jun 1 2013, 10:44 AM.

4m with 25hp on the back is quick! my 4.5m with me, the 2 eldest and a big esky do the same. (26kn is moving!!!) 50L fuel too. although 40hp merc. still 40kph is moving. my cruise is 30kph (17knts) |

OOPS correction I shoulda put 30hp for my motor, but I use premium fuel and reckon it goes faster and further for sure. The last trip out I went out in C**kburn sound and tried a couple of spots before heading out level with back of Rotto, also fishing a few different spots. Then coming in against a north easterly chop still did it on one red tank with a couple of litres to spare in it. Did have another tank as back up this time though. Cruise speed is a lot slower though, I rarely ever do 40kph that was just for a test. 15-30kph on average on a good day, heaps more economical.

48kph was with a bit of mucking around with trim and on dead flat water. (Not very stable at that speed haha) Normally just cruise around most of time so I don't screw up the back too much. Winds not too bad down here either, scoring a few brownie points with the mrs today so I can head out tomorrow. |

I wanna move to a 110 4-stroke. Those 4 strokes are really good on fuel hey. The upgrade in power for those glassy days to cruise out 50 clicks. At the moment chew about 60-70L, but in my eyes success is all about moving spot to spot and exploring for me. Next trips might goto Cervantes as banks only 15k out, cheaper on fuel when you do the math over a couple of days out. Generally I sit on 20-22 knts at 4500 rpm with a 90 2S at cruise. Before I had the hydrofoil I was able to get a max speed of 30-32knts. After install its been 27-28knts....I'm not sure if fuels better. But my turning circle is better and general control. Can't say it planes easier though, considering smallish boat I guess has more of an effect on bigger boats? Edited by Spence, Jun 1 2013, 12:50 PM.

Yeh I thought so too. But I think it only helps larger boats that have difficulty planing. Lighter boats get up and plane easily without them and then because the prop is under pressure due to concentrating power forward it doesn't spin as fast. My theory anyhow |

I get 22 knots out of my 35 hp Johnson (with foil and tunes stainless prop) in my 4.2 Bluefin. I have heaps of weight in my boat with floor boards, center console, HD seats, heavy plate ect. I get to the 5 fathom easy and back easy on 1 tank if flat and just if choppy. Have 2 x 20ltr tanks on board. I use premium with a fuel additive as the standard fuel was making the plugs go very black quickly. Sounds like we might have to have a Tinny comp. 4.5 and under only? |

yeap or just above. the other issue is making sure there is no ventilation of the prop and the water pickup gets water. Another good read is here http://www.yamahaoutboards.com/sites/default/files/bulletins/bulletin_2stroke_hpmidport_pro_sa9f50.tmp.pdf these are the performance bulletiens put out by yamaha to give the owners an idea on the best motor location for optimum fuel economy/performance some even go into full detail on the exact hieght the motor should be |

Yep I wouldn't go back to standard fuel in my tinny but not sure what I'd do in a bigger boat with bigger tanks, imagine putting premium in with 150l or more at once. Tinny comp sounds good, I'd be happy to have some tinny companionship one night out past the five fathom bank and beyond if others would like, if your game. Maybe out to about 40metres if weather is good, I don't mind as usually I look for new areas most trips out anyway. It can't be next weekend as I'm away and it does rely on what the weathers going to do. Also I prefer friday night (cause I can recover from my aches and pains before monday for work) but would do a Sat night if weather is better or suits others better. |

Depending on weather, I'll be heading out in a fortnight either friday or sat, anyone who wants to go is welcome to. All night at least probably from around 5-6pm start. Head out between Garden and Carnac checking spots around five fathom bank, only stopping if schools of fish found/spotted otherwise out to 30m and check around and see what happens, then out to 40m or so. I'll make a decision only about two/three days before though cause its all about the weather. |

A few things, this is just mates going fishing, you do it at your own risks and need to have all the right gear and fuel. Also you have to be able to see clearly in front of your boat just in case of anything in the water. There are quite a few craypots around and if moving around at night you only do it real slowly. I've been out on some boats with plastic clears and you can see stuff all at night. I can see over my windscreen or I can open it up to have a clear view. if you don't have a clear view don't go. |

Spence you will always lose speed with a hydrofoil on. I've got one on my boat and have tried it off and on and you defiantly lose 2-3knots. without one I lose a lot of trim so I just leave it on now as I can't get the nose down with out it on a rough day. Another option is a four blade prop which also gives you more lift in arse end but in researching for my boat he hydrofoi was answer. |

Thanks Ezi, I'm not too fussed. End of the day I wanna whack on an extra 25 horses and 4S. If there's an easy change, I'll probably look into it. I have no issues gettig nose down with or without. Purchased it on that there might be a fuel saving. I think there is from trips, but hard to confirm. hard to tell with boats. |

Yeah as long as weather plays nicely 14 or 15th. I haven't been out this weekend cause of the easterlies and I know how uncomfortable it is further out for small vessels. I bet heaps of boats still went out seeing its a long weekend and its fine if you stay in close. As I'm going away next weekend not fishing I'll be real keen by the 14th or 15th. I'll go out even if there is light rain, just as long as wind is okay. Tuesday looks pretty good for those lucky enough not to be working. |

Spences motor mounted pretty well in the sweet spot. Foil is not for speed but lift, which usually results in more spoeed as less planning hull and friction etc. It is probably that your hull isn't long enough to get any real effect from the lift offered due to the balance of weight/length/hp etc. Is the improved turning under power at low speed or high speeds or both? I imagine both. I am so up for a tinny mission with anyone. Mine is just under 4.2, old as the hills quintrex and I'm running a 18 Tohatsu. Which is a proper outboard, not a cheap Merc...;) Tohatsu makes all mercs for mercury under 30hp but keeps the good bits for themselves. Lookin at the weather report and with Friday off thinkin a local rocko reef bash is to be the go. Anyone else out? High tide around 830am, thinkin pink anyone? text me if anyone else goin...
