River fishing has been pretty patchy lately, some days catching heaps, others scratching around for SFA. Been discussing bream fly colours with a couple a mates and why some work better than others in different locations/times of the day. A mate took this photo last night of some of his bream flies under UV light, Its interesting that the chartreuse & pink really humms and interestingly it’s a particular material that’s doing it (Muz Wilson BMS). The other material is similar, but quite obviously is pretty mild by comparison. These flies are still just lures at the end of the day, and thought it was intersting that the UV glow might have some effect. It would be interesting if someone would try the same experiment with their hard bodies and plastics. I don't know if the glow under UV is key but I do know that chartreuse and pink patterns have caught us lots of bream. Edited by K1W1, Jul 18 2013, 03:00 PM.

Very Interesting. I'm not sure if this counts but I've been having more success with glow in the dark SP's but I have been fishing them late arvo. With HB I've usually gone for a tight action on the theory they sense the vibrations better. Maybe colour might have to be more of a consideration. |

Ive been doing a fair bit of reading about the suggestion that fish see in UV, especially in deeper water where the light doesnt penetrate so much. I'll try to dig out the articles while im at work tonight. that being said i invested in a couple of paints that i thought might do the trick for plastics, jig heads, lures etc..... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/60ml-Ultra-Bright-UV-Paint-8-Vivid-Colours-U-V-Neon-Rave-Art-Glow-U-V-Luminous-/330856015561?pt=UK_Clothing_Masks_JD&var=&hash=item4d088e26c9#ht_839wt_1159 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Glow-paint-Home-Fishing-Hooks-Rods-100-Waterproof-/250568734445?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3a570f76ed#ht_2537wt_1158 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Glow-in-dark-Tape-/250767984805?pt=AU_Sport_Fishing_Tackle&hash=item3a62efc8a5#ht_1804wt_1158 I have yet to put it into practice as i cant get out often enough to give it a fair go. But i can see how the theory holds up. How many fish, shallow or deeper water, salt or fresh, have a nice sheen to them or a glow as you bring them up and the light hits them. Most! A bit of paint and a coat of hardener to your lure/jig/hook and it should light up like a christmas tree. Also trying with.... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50-Glitter-Silicone-Skirt-Tabs-Glow-in-Dark-bass-musky-spinner-bait-lure-making-/390517520448?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aeca87840#ht_2931wt_1158 so many things i want to try. Damn work, family, money, life in general. so inconvenient. |

Hey Kiwi, stupid question but those lures in your pic, do they glow in the dark after youve shined light on em or do they glow only in uv light? I checked it out after reading your post and I reckon it would make a difference. Gonna get me some uv paint. Lee Rayner (Legend) mentioned it in the kalbarri episode of AB awhile back. |

Agreed on Adventure Bound, about the only fishing show i watch. I know what youre talking about Numbskull, those flies dont retain the glow like those beads on sabaki rigs, they only look like that under UV light. Ive got some tied with a body made out of that green tube that retains its glow but havent used them enough to comment on the effectivness of a visibly glowing lure/fly on bream. |

Lures that glow under uv light definitely get more hits. Especially low light/night time. I just recently got a uv torch from a tackle shop in midland and went through my collection that night. The sure fire lures all had the same type of glow patch around the throat head area.. UV light also lights up glow stuff heaps quicker and better than normal light. Definitely a factor in lure selection for me now... Bright light and fast water I reckon action and design of colours more important though. |
