Write up in the local paper today says that landing a protected shark (above 1.8m) is illegal and can cause a 5000 buck fine plus 1000 bucks for additional sharks.
Never heard of this before, whats everyone elses thoughts on it?

Rec rules state the 700mm for Interdorsal fin length for Whaler sharks.
I'm assuming this would put them over at 1.8mtrs.
There was a bit of a huff about Danny Green posting a Tiger he caught on FB that looked over.
Could have something to do with it?

Yeah i knew about the 700mm size limit, according to this article you can be fined just for landing one even if you release it.

There are rules in South Aust like that but haven't seen it here. It's illegal in some areas to even use "shark gear". Not a local council thing is it?

I talked to an ex fisheries fella about this.

A matter of semantics, one of the pilars of a prosecutions is about proving posession, i.e. intent to keep. landed in fisheries terms is posession.

If you have a whaler over that max size, finned, gutted, bled and on ice, they call that landed and will go for you.

If you bring it onboard to get the hook out that is not landed because you do not intend to keep it.
They say "the early bird gets the worm"... Not a problem, worms all yours birdy. I'll get up around noon and fish a dry fly - Hank Patterson
