Had some fun with another couple of rat kingys before they shut down. Shifted again a little deeper where my plastic was nailed by a feisty little groper that put the hrf through it's paces.
After that the wind whipped up which meant I was able to test how water proof the new console was and how having the tanks up front would change the ride.

Pretty happy with the tinnys mods, gives a heap more room to fish out of and it seems to want to launch off waves less with the tanks up front. Only thing I need to improve on is shifting some weight across the left of the tinny as it leans to the right at rest, I had expected that so think a little live bait tank or even esky with a few litres of water in it for solo trips will sort it out.

Maude reef actually breaks sometimes, so you need to be a bit careful where you anchor or drift over.

Sounds like it's going very well.
Some good fillets for a test trip.
I think if you put the esky on ther other side your boat will be pretth level by the end of your trips.

Back home after my week in Exmouth so I'd better throw a report together before I go back to work.

Knock off work early on the Friday, loaded up the boat and car, rounded up the kid and hit the road around 2pm, after a dinner stop in Perth I settled down for the long drive north while my passengers provided no assistance, sleeping through the night.
After an uneventful night we arrived into a chilli Exmouth at 7 Saturday morning ahead of schedule, dropped into caltex for a feed before killing some time going for a drive along the beach north of town, nearly running into a bit of trouble while watching sharks cruise the shallows.

A quick bit of shovel work and we were away again, knowing that our unit wasn't going to be ready until 2 we decided to head south for a look at the bay of rest.
Found an unreal launch area and with a high tide we couldn't resist unloading the tinny for a look.
Had a nightmare of a time starting my newly serviced outboard, lost a brand new stickbait in the mangroves, the camera wouldn't work and my phone battery died before emily reached into her backpack pulling out a bunch of bananas that were swiftly launched into the far reaches of the mangrove creek.

After that Megan picked up a nice cod and spotted mackerel on the troll before calling it a day and heading back to the unit to unpack.

Sunday I headed off tandabiddi with the wind due to drop off mid morning before cranking up to 30knot southerlies after lunch.
Trolled the back of the reef heading south where I noticed a lack of birds, bait and tuna. With my lures going untouched for hours and the wind backing off I thought I'd make a run out wide to 200m for some bottom bouncing, found some likely ground but couldn't stay connected or beat the sharks so it was back in to 100m where first drop I hooked a decent fish, only to have a solid red fall off the circle hook just under the boat where it sat for a minute then made it's way back to the depths.
After that the bite died off, sharks moved in and wind picked up, so it was time to make a dash back inside the reef and switch to surface lures.
Had a few follows and bloody long Tom before scoring a little golden for future bait. High light of the afternoon was watching a big hammerhead fly around the reef after a big squid, didn't get to see how it all panned out but my money was on the shark.
Made my way back to tandabiddi with the wind to find I was the only boat left out.

Monday was pretty much a write off with the wind so we headed back to the bay of rest, only got a ray and learnt that the whole bay basically drains dry at low tide which made for a fun trip back.

Tuesday threatened to be another write off but the wind dropped off enough to warrent a trip off tandabiddi inside the reef.
Had a cracking session on plastics and stickbaits with at least 30 splangled emperor, red throat and fingermark coming onboard along with more longtom and countless Charlie court cod. Had a few complete Smashing's that we had no chance of pulling out on 30lb.

The forecast was a little better for Wednesday (only 20 knots) so I was back at tandabiddi early ready to go.
Being the first there I was soon underway and heading towards the north passage, things just seemed fishy with a heap of birds lined up the length of the reef.

So I deployed my trolling lures and made my way out towards the birds, didn't take long for something to take a liking to my lure with line peeling off my fin nor.
Not wanting to take my chances with sharks I wound the drag up and went hard, bringing a nice mackerel into the boat.
That was the start of a great few hours of trolling with a total of five Macks hitting the deck in amongst a loosing a couple to sharks. Also spotted a free jumping Marlin another km out but hooked up to another macky while making my way out to it.

With the wind picking up again I put the big lures away and focused on some soft plastics and 30g jigs along the bommies. Picked up some very colourful coronation trout, a cod and a barracuda as well as loosing a few assists to what I'm guessing were mackerel before deciding to call it a day.

Thought you'd just had some sashimi lol. Looks like a pretty reasonable trip anyway, just slightly jealous of the Mackies.

Exmouth turned the weather on Thursday with a near glass off as I headed out the west side again. This time the birds were nowhere to be seen and as a result my diving minnows went untouched.
Thought I'd make the most of the conditions pulling in close to the reef to throw a mixture of poppers, stickbaits and plastics up against the break, had no luck at all which could have been due to the swarms of sharks that continuously patrol the reef. So I decided to head out wide instead.
Found a couple of small tuna schools and after a number of casts I managed to stay connected to a little stripy which was put on ice for bait.
Made my way back to my spot in 100m and sounded around until I found some fish, it was slow going for the first few drops until it seemed like a switch was flipped. All of a sudden there were hits the moment my bait hit the bottom with splangled emperor, golden snapper, scarlet perch and a little red coming up from the depths.
As usual I got done a couple of times missing my chance at a big beast from the deep as within 45min the bite was over.

Again the wind started picking up so it was back to the ramp to pick up Megan and Emily for another shallow reef session which unfortunately only turned up Charlie court and long toms.

Friday was to be my last chance to get out so I was up early and at caltex filling up the tinny tanks ready for a dawn raid off towards the muirons.
Made my way from bundegi past the navy pier and out towards the gas rigs, made the mistake of going through the middle of the water between the gulf and western side where the current had whipped up some mean whirlpools and chop.
Eventually made it out and cruised my way out to some likely ground in 80-120m, struggled to find anything worth dropping on until I sounded up a school on a tiny lump.
Like the day before the fish were hard to tempt with only some tiny orange cod coming up before that magical switch flipped. This time I was able to land a diamond trevally and a pearl perch before being reefed and having the bite shut down.
Tried a few more spots with no luck so headed back across to the islands for some lure action, blew my chance of a good gt with a crap cast and boated a small golden before trying over the flats with plastics but the place was dead.
With the day wearing on I deployed the deep divers and began making my way along the 12m mark of the south island. Got smashed by what I'll call for a gt before having the tyrnos scream with the classic run of a macky, had my other setup get hit as I retrieved so had to try balance both setups without loosing them over the side.
Luckily the hooks pulled on one and before long a nice macky was beaten boatside and on ice, I swung around again and was hit in minutes.
This time the fish seemed a lot bigger showing no signs of slowing down, I retrieved the other line and swung around to chase the fish down. 10min later I was starting to get some line back and shortly after had the unmistakable long yellow fins of a solid yellowfin tuna boatside with only a single treble in it's mouth, I went to loosen the drag but the fish made the first move taking off for one last dash for a freedom pulling the hook.
No doubt that'll haunt me for months to come.

With the sun getting low I called it a trip and set off back to the beach at a steady 40kph

Boats been in the shed since coming back from Exmouth and the weather has seen my motivation just about disappear, nearly dusted it off Saturday but instead decided to do a few jobs around the house.

Was reading a new book with Emily which had a picture of mudcrabs in and got an idea, koonacs.
So we loaded the ute with dropnets and scoop net and set off down the road.
Had a ball for a hour or so spotlighting koonacs (or crabs as Emily calls them) ending up with our limit pretty quickly.

Got away for the long weekend 4x4ing our way from Collie up to dwellingup.
Got a fish in at Harvey dam picking up a bunch of small redfin while Megan as usual outfished me with a solid trout from a fallen log.
Also spotted a number of red fin in a creek feeding into waroona dam in a foot of water

After yet another rubbish weekend the wind died off and sun came out. Decided to make the most of it by heading out after work.
I had planned to run out to the shelf and drop some big baits (swordfish from the tinny would be unreal) but a commercial vessel working 20km out had me change course and head to the 50s instead.
Heaps of fish on the sounder but they weren't overly fired up, picked up some small 5-8kg sambos, swallow tail and a solid Queenie before calling it a night around 1030.

With the weather finally coming good this weekend i just had to get out for a fish.
Original plan was to head out Friday night but a bad headache saw me decide to get a few hours sleep and sneak out early morning before the easterlies were forecast to pick up.
Was hard work at my usual spots with only a few small pinkys and a good breaksea cod coming up along with a number of plastics missing chunks thanks to bloody leather jackets.
Decided to try a spot i hadn't fished in 18months and was quickly rewarded with a couple of little Queenie's and a undersized dhuie, before connecting to something a lot bigger which had my 4000 sized vadel struggling.
Kept waiting for either my leader or braid to pop but everything held together and soon a big blue groper was boatside.
After that it was time to call it a day and make the wet trek back to the beach

Finally got a chance to fish yesterday, after a stay in Melbourne, a bucks night and a mates wedding (poor bugger was still spewing 30min before saying i do)
I was very keen to hit the road and try to find a trout, first up we hit Craigbourne dam with no luck, then startrd making out way north going by nothing but google maps.
Came across multiple fishy streams and rivers but access was our biggest issue with most "roads" being farmers driveways. We did have a crack along the south esk river where megan dropped a fish from the rapids and i was attacked by raspberry bushes.

With the day ticking by we decided to quickly race up to the high country where we fished one of the hydro power stations. Had a blast picking up two little trout while regretting my choice of wearing shorts in 6 degrees.
Currently on a four hour stop over in Sydney before hopefully finding a jungle perch and barra tomorrow in north qld.

Managed to tick jungle perch off the holiday list today, took a fair bit of work to find a suitable location but eventually found a nice stream just out of Ingham.
Walked a number of kms until spotting a couple of fish which i spooked with a crap cast while megan was busy landing a tortoise that took a liking to her plastic.

We took care of the tortoise and moved on to the next pool, first cast was perfect and immediately rewarded with a fish darting out from the rock and engulfing my plastic.
I was able to get it away from the rock and shortly after had my first perch on the bank, after a quick pic iy was released back into the pool to it's mates.
Had a few more casts with no luck so it was time to call it a day.

Shot up to Tully today to fish the mighty Tully river, after a quick look through the local tackleworld we headed up the 30odd km into the gorge.
Had to look around for an access point but eventually made our way through the jungle and onto the river bank, once my croc paranoia had subsided Megan picked out our first spot and we got fishing.
Second cast into some overgrown grass a big gold shape appeared and as it rolled i knew it was a Barra, the line went tight and i was on, immediately i was cursing the fact i chose to use the little culcutta over the hrf as the fish took me straight into to grass.
Luck was on my side as i was able to pull it out into the open where it put on a aerial display

We each picked up a couple more small sootys before they clued onto us and wouldnt strike so it was back up into the jungle and off to the next likely spot further upstream.
This time we focused our efforts on a deep pool directly after a long set of rapids. First cast saw me get smoked by an unknown beast which i could do nothing to stop.
Megan was on next while i was rerigging with a solid jungle perch that spat the hook during landing which was unfortunate, again the fish realised our presence and wouldn't strike which was bloody frustrating watching big sootys and perch follow every lure to our feet.
Had a drinks break while a whitewater rafting tour went past and had another cast, this time it was Megans turn to cop a beating with line peeling off her quantnum smoke, a quick look at me showed she knew she was in trouble and seconds later the fight was over.
A few more casts later with no more action we decided to swift spots again, this time to a beautiful scenic part of the river

Megan decided it was a good time to kick back and cool off from the 35 degree heat while i fished on. Found a shady little hole and had a cast, hooking onto a little speedy tarpon which was another nice suprise.

With the day dragging on we started making our way back towards Tully stopping at a few of the rocky streams that provide access to the river. Some looked very crocish so we kept moving.
Found one last nice spot and decided on a few last casts which saw me land a couple solid sootys before a log/rock/croc in the distance saw us decide to call it a day.
Rest day tomorrow then South to bowen for some salt water action
