Got out to Walpole today with my brother, had a bit of fun getting out the inlet before cruising out to goose island with the plan of scoring a few kingys on the light gear.
Had the odd half hearted follow from kings but they were hard to come by, instead picked up a few Skippy, swallowtail, and sea sweep before running out of assists and switching to plastics.

Found some smaller dhuies to 58cm along with a harli and what I'll call for a big groper that reefed me then shifted out to the exposed reef to anchor up.

Switched over to Skippy and sweep strip baits and sent them down over the reef, lots of pickers around but picked up a half dozen legal Pinky's (some just legal) more breaksea cod and a couple big unknowns before calling it a day for a BBQ back at the beach

Headed up the river to try find a river monster with my brother last night, quickly got some baits sorted from emu point and made our way to a new spot along the river.
Didn't have an outstanding night with runs few and far between but Dylan did manage a decent little croaker just after midnight after having to be woken up.

Not easy to get the big one aye, still that's better than nothing. Starts getting to be an obsession though trying for the big croaker.

Its not a bad way to spend a night up on the river, best thing is every trip is different and unlike out on the boat you can lay back and take in the stars, sounds etc.

Yep Walpole is back to its good old self, channel is completely different to last year but at least there's a metre of water

Ended up being a busy night out, missed a couple early runs straight up so decided to switch out to the flick rod and half a yellowtail.
Scored a little 50cm model before the quantum smoke 30 started screaming, had to go for a walk up and down the river for 20 minutes but finally scored a decent one coming in a little over 90cm.

Missed another run while reviving the big one then settled down for the night, ended up with 15 runs, 10 mulloway between 40-90cm and one that did me on the oysters.
Think I've worked out that a single circle hook in the tail of the baits has the greatest success for me too.

Nice work.
Looks like your mate wants to do other things than be in the shot. Were many of those hookups the same fish (roughly speaking) because if not then the waterway is is healthy with some good fish.

Haha yep she wanted the left over bit of bait instead.
All different fish, its an unique system in that the fish don't shift out to see or move anywhere. Means there's 1000s of them in here but like redfin there's a lot of stunted growth and inbreeding, one of the reasons why the real big ones are hard to find.

Awesome night by the sounds. Between yours and Dannys reports I have been convinced to head down for an overnighter. Hopefully catch one. Whats the eating quality like from there? I like to keep one every now and then.

Been a bit slow on the reply, I haven't kept one from there but know Dan rated them pretty highly.

Dropped into a local tackleshop this arvo for a quick look, ended up scoring a bunch of jigs for 5Bucks a piece along with some twin packs of harbour assists for $2. Least it won't hurt so much when I loose them haha

Got out today with a mate for a jig vs bait battle. Fishing wasn't red hot but steady enough to get a few feeds in the esky.

Ended up being a bit of a random day for captures with the baits picking up some solid blackarse and Skippy while jigs saw three dhuies a grouper a big bait destined cuttlefish and my first gummy shark on jig which would've been the last ever thing I was going to guess out there.

If you dont mind, what jigs do you use and how do you work them? im keen to give it shot on he next trip out.

I use a number of different jigs, usually whatever I can find in the bargain bins at the tackle shop.
Basically I find orange/pinks/reds seem to work well for me, something with a reasonably wide profile is better suited to demersals.

Working them I reckon slower the better, with the little baitcaster I just give the rod slow lifts without winding, then just let it sink back down, can add a few more erratic lifts just to change things up. You'll find most strikes happen on the sink so it pays to keep an eye on the line, if it goes slack you're probably on.

Yeah seriously the last thing I expected. Called it for a big breaksea at the start as it did nothing, wasn't until it was on the surface that it woke up.

Enough fillets to keep us going for another couple weeks at least

Managed to dust off the tinny today for one last deep drop with my brother.
Bagged out on puka within four drifts before heading in for a few nannies, picked up a little greyband along with two nannies before the Sambos moved in smashing jigs which isnt fun in 150m.

Still haven't found the blue eye but cant complain

Nah I'm done, fish the inshore part of the albany comp this weekend then I'll strip the whole thing out for a good clean, fold the console down and strap the cover on.
Might try scoring a trip out on another boat but the tinny has earnt itself a rest.

Had today off so decided to head down to a nearby beach with Emily to throw a few poppers at the resident monster tailor for a couple hours.
Had a few follows over the reef but couldnt hook a tailor, ended up with a bunch of solid herring and a small salmon before the wind picked up and we called it a day.

Got out to the beach again this arvo for another couple salmon on the surface before the tide dropped too low.
Decided to go for a walk across the reef, dropping salmon chunks into the various rock pools along the way, picking up a number of solid silver bream and a skippy as well as spotting wobbygong sharks and occies.

Almost tempted to chuck the snorkel on as i reckon thered have to be crays in the caves along the place.

Had a crack at the Albany comp today deciding to do the inshore part.
If i hadn't already paid to enter i probably wouldve shot out dwep again as the weather was a perfect glass off all day.

Did alright with a good feed of sand whiting and solid squid as well as my limit of scalies which were in unreal numbers out in the sound.
Didnt end up winning any sections but cant complain too much

Had a quick drive down to the beach with emily early this morning wanting to make the most of todays northerly wind, had two casts before heading home due to a huge swell and a crazy current.
Emily wasn't overly impressed with my efforts so we headed up a local river this afternoon armed with a bag of slimy macks to chase a few bream.

Had a ball landing about 10 solid 30-40cm fish before the little rats caught on hitting our baits as soon as they hit the water. Did give emily some practice on hooking and winding in her own fish which she thought was unreal

Had an explore along the freshwater upper reaches of the kalgan sunday in the yaks with my brother.
Found a number of reasonable size bream on lures and came across a heap of very fishy looking stretches above various rapids but they were basically lifeless.
Still a great few hours out

With todays forecast promising to be perfect i decided to get the mrs out there after a few fish.
We headed out to cheynes early only to be met with pretty average conditions (not the 0kph winds that the albany airport was saying, along with a crappy short sharp chop that made it slow going and an unreal current)

Decided against heading up towards the twin islands and the shelf, instead making our way around bald island to get out of the wind. Tried some good ground out the back of the island where megan scored a solid 65cm dhuie along with another 55cm model (released) while i picked up a couple red bight fish and a small tuna before moving on.
Dropped on more likely looking areas with no great results so called it a day at 12

Been hitting up a number of smaller waterways down here in the kayak following rumors of trout, perch and bass.
Bashed my way into the upper reaches of the Denmark weir on what felt like the coldest morning of the year and spent the next 7 hours cast after cast at the uncountable amount of snags, gravel holes and grass floodplains without a single hit or even sign of a fish.

Then it was out to nornalup for another full day paddling, found a heap of small bream along with a number of herring as we made our way up into the fresher water but the big fish were hard to find with only two legal bream between three of us all day.
Did manage a little salmon that put up a solid fight on the light gear

Then last weekend i headed right up.the king river, launching from the upper bridge i paddled a good 40 minutes to where a little stream branches off, lost my first every south coast trout within ten minutes of casting with a little 30ish cm fish spitting the hook.
Mindful of not so happy farmers in the area i kept my mouth shut and kept making my way upstream reaching an area that just screamed fish.
Kept casting along the grassy banks but didnt keep my eye on my plastic pulling it straight out of the water with a big trout right underneath it.

After that and another 100 or so casts i decided to call it a day, so close but still.so far.

And finally today I hit up the Kalgan thinking the recent rains might have flushed the river mulloway down into the deeper holes of the river. Found a heap of small salmon trout (wouldve been unreal live baits) along with a few smaller 25ish cm bream on surface lures.

The tides made plastics a little hard to fish but still managed a nice soapie from one of my favorite holes and dropped another before heading home.
