Some real scenic spots you've managed to find and fish. Couldn't be much left you haven't seen. When are you heading off.

Its pretty unreal the amount of hidden waterways down here, still havent touched rivers like the kent or any west of town.
Got a little over 4 weeks until i hit the road, lots still to pack up and get ready so going to be a mad month ahead

So while most of Wa freezes through another winter Ive bailed and headed north east to north qld.
Made it across the country averaging 1300km a day and 12.5litres per 100 with the dog, cat, boat and bunch of other crap. Smacked a roo about 150km from the wa/sa border that the navara didnt fare too well out of, but some roadside repairs and its good as new until i put a claim in down the track.

Dropped into bowen for a quick fish on the way up the qld coast but didnt have much luck so with a few days to spare before megan and emily fly across i decided to head further north to tully

Rolled into tully and headed straight up the river into the freshwater. Access is either down the smaller following streams or through thick jungle, so after getting over my fear of leaches it was down the rocky streams to beautiful rapids and pools.
Didnt do overly great on numbers but still managed some smaller sooty grunter and a solid jungle perch sight casted from a shallow fast moving section of river

Spent the night back down towards the centre of tully on a river beach, had mullet and the odd boof of barra during the night but with the threat of crocs i decided that the fireplace was a safer option

Next morning I checked out mission beach but decided to go up the river again trying a few different spots. Again picked up sootys but with the sun out so were the tourists, so it was back onto google maps to plot out a quieter spot.

Found a possible spot along a creek that feeds into the river and it didnt let me down with crystal clear water and a deeper channel running along the bank

Had a ball throwing lightly weighted plastics along the channel picking up small jungle perch and some decent sootys to 30cm as i made my way down the sandy river.

From there i headed into cardwell for the night camping out on one of the marina rock walls casting plastics for not much of a result.
With a cabin booked from today onwards i started heading back to Townsville stopping to head down a track id spotted on the trip north,

Didnt look like it cops much traffic but it comes out at a perfect deep section of creek that was holding good fish, had a couple of solid hits on the popper but couldnt hook up.

With the tide falling and sun up i switched to plastics picking up a couple of small jacks and a neat archerfish which is another species to tick off the list

Shot out locally mid morning scoping out some more spots, found a few likely looking ponds in a dry river bed that were holding a bunch of little barra and tarpon.
Also noticed some bigger swirls in amongst the weeds which has me thinking there may be some bigger barra in there, going to pick up a pack of weedless jigheads and have another crack this evening

They only grow to about 4kg in aust, go pretty hard for there size though. Also top live baits as well.
Looking forward to being able to clear the tinny out and hitting a few creeks, had four days in a row of under 10knots all day.

Had a flick at nightfall in the barra creek with a bigger stickbait which saw me land a slightly bigger fish before bailing back to the safety of the ute.

Then yesterday arvo shot out just north of townsville to a likely looking creek, found some good jungle perch in the shade that took a liking to surface lures with some neat strikes.

From there it was a quick five minute drive downstream and time for some mini gt action on plastics and bream gear. Picked up half a dozen along with small cod, archerfish and fingermark before switching back to surface lures for as the sun set and the jacks came out.
Lost some solid jacks from against the rocks making short work of the 6lb gear, so think its time to pull out the baitcaster with 15lb to try and even it out a bit

Had to put a jumper on yesterday morning haha, tops of 27-28 have been unreal lately.
A lot of the creeks have a lack of access due to farmland or mining which is a pain so theres been a fair bit of bush bashing and hope i can find the car again afterwards, along with trying not to stumble onto crocs, snakes, goannas, spiders or wait a while bushes.
Cant wait to get the tinny back in action

They reckon anything over 45cm from the smaller local creeks is a top catch, once you start travelling a bit further along the coast then 50cm plus ones arent uncommon.

Found a few salt water barra today, went for walk at the bottom of the tide to check out some snags that i reckon will hold some decent fish with a bit more water.
Ended up with four undersized barra along with a couple of grunter and a dozen or so little gts.

Got the boat out for its first qld run today, picked a nice quiet creek and spent a bit of time trolling with the family.
Megan got a little gt while i got done over by something solid before switching to casting plastics for a few cod, scored a sized muddy in the drop net before cruising back to the ramp.

Tried a bigger system south of townsville today, knowing it was going to be busy I headed away from everyone else into the higher sections of the river.
Trolled for a couple hours for two archer fish whilst spotting three big crocs on the banks along with at least a dozen or so fresh slides which made me keep everything well and truly inside the tinny.

With the tide rising i switched tactics throwing hardbodies into wooden snags, didnt take too long before i had a solid take followed by a barra quickly launch out the water. Luckly i was able to get it out of the snags and soon had the tinnys first barra on board coming in at 65cm.
Called it a day after that marking a few likely spots for next time

Haha beats the cold of Albany anyway. Headed out again yesterday arvo with the family, Megan got a undersized blue salmon on the troll and we spooked a horse of a barra on a submerged tree while going in to retrive a snagged lure.
A electric motor is pretty high on the to buy list shortly

Joys of a four day working week is that i get the ramp pretty much to my self on Friday, so i headed out early turning off up a smaller feeder creek where salmon were getting stuck into prawns along the flats. Couldnt pick up a salmon but scored an alright flathead second cast that was released after a quick pic.

Continued up into the upper reaches of the creek and focused my efforts on the snags for a number of small cod and jacks, although i struggled getting a solid hookup only boating 1 out of 5 fish.
Finished the morning off with a few throws of the cast net for some prawns and a muddy from the dropnets for lunch.

Been putting a few hours in over the last couple weeks for not a lot of results.
Dropped some good barra late at night on live baits due to bad luck ( bent hooks, popped knots etc) but its all a good learning curve. Did have some fun on big tarpon last weekend but still only boated one out of 8 hookups.

Going to fill up the tanks and load the sleeping bag up for a reef trip this weekend, nearly a 100km out to sea in a 4.2m tinny, what could possibly go wrong

Lanched very early yesterday morning loaded up with 130l of fuel, 20l of water and enough rods to cover just about anything with the intention of making it to the reef.
Weather wasnt too bad with a 10knot nor easter that whipped up just enough chop to slow me down to a painfully slow 20kph at some points.

Picked up a big mac tuna for bait on the troll and while i was unhooking that i noticed i was in the middle of a big cobia school, grabbed the first rod i could and was instantly on, downside was i'd grabbed the smallest setup on board (5000 sustain and 20lb) resulting in a sharked cobia.

Moved on and kept bouncing my further than the tinny has ever been eventually reaching the reef putting me over 90km offshore and well over 100km from where i set off.
The sounder was alive with fish and it wasnt long until i had my first coral trout on board, even if it was only 20cm.

Spent most of my time scouting out areas then moving on after a few drops. Most spots held coral trout, red throat, cod and extra large unstoppables that made quick work of 50lb.
Spent 30min throwing stickbaits up onto the reef and got nailed by a big red bass but didnt hookup. Ended up anchoring up just off the reef to cook up a late lunch and finished off my trout bag with a solid dark coloured fish, had a few bite offs that didnt feel like sharks so chucked on a wire trace and sent a chunk of tuna down.
Got a solid hookup, locked the drag and started winding. Ended up with a 90cm ugly as anything groper that was released after a quick pic.
Got busted off next drop and with some good feeds in the esky i decided to call it a day and make the long trip back to the ramp.
