Got a good km or so stretch that produces well and the best thing is most boaties go straight past and head for the horizon.
Been a heap of smaller dhus around this year which is great to see, just need the bigger ones to come out and play.

Really liking the Zman plastics too, last all day and dont instantly dry out from leaving the bag open. Tried a pack of McArthy Paddletails in Exmouth and needed a new plastic every fish which started to add up after a while.

Well after the hike and snapper on Saturday we all headed out to the Denmark tavern to celebrate my mrs's birthday. As she can't drink I took it upon myself to drink not only for the both of us but also our unborn child, so as you can probably guess I woke in the morning with a killer hangover and to make matters worse the brother's and sister inlaw wanted some more fishing action (only the father inlaw and i drink).
After a couple of strong coffees and a cold shower we loaded up the utes and headed out to the local rocks ready to catch some fish. Within minutes of unloading the rods we were onto none stop salmon action, with a massive school (along with tuna further out) that just hung around for hours. Everyone was onto them with a good 50 or so caught and lost on all sorts of homemade cheapo lures. Great fun watching big 7-8kg salmon fight over a painted broomstick wound in flat out.
After spying a big shark surfacing I decided to throw (ok really its just a drop off the rocks) a 7kg salmon under a few balloons with two 12/0s thru its back. Within minutes a massive 3m plus shark came flying out of the water nailing the salmon and so began a quick 15minute aerial battle with a very annoyed shark. Eventually it launched itself out of the water in a twist, wrapped itself up and snapped the line.
With my heart pumping i rerigged and sent another big salmon back out under a balloon. This one cruised around for a hour or so without any interest so the inlaws packed up their ute and left the mrs and I to finish off the bait.
We started to burley up with a bag of mulies, few herring and two bonito frames. Looking over at the balloon we noticed another salmon make a quick dash away before another massive shark came up taking the bait. This fight was quickly over as my knot pulled.
After a few unsuccessful casts for salmon we decided to throw out one of the big skippy we had caught under a balloon on the fin nor lethal 100 and 15-24kg ugly stick. Within 30seconds of hitting the water yet another big dark shape surfaced and quickly took the skippy. With drag set as tight as i dared the shark kept going and going and going but before i knew it 500m of 50lb was gone and it was all over. (reel was pretty damn hot after that)
With one skippy and one wire trace remaining we rigged up the tld25 again and chucked the bait off the rocks. 5 minutes passed before the balloons popped and dragged screamed as another smaller shark of 2m took the bait and so began a 50min battle. Knowing that there was no real safe chance to land it we decided to get a happy snap before cutting the line as close as we could.
Amazing to see how many sharks there are down here (any how game they are to take big baits)
Got to love the wax heads that go surfing amongst the salmon schools.
For every day that you don't pay, I'm gunna cut one of your fingers off

Got out last Sunday but really struggled finding anything worth keeping.
Ended up with one little queen snapper, little dhuie, a sambo and various small breaksea cod, sgt bakers and wrasse.

Then yesterday I teamed up with Colin and a few other members from Southern Wa Outdoors for a Wilson inlet trip which turned out to be bloody cold, wet and nearly fishless.
So after a few too many beers last night and a much nicer day today, I headed back to the inlet today to use up the left over bait. Had three good solid runs but just couldnt get the hooks to stick. Also picked up a nice 45cm tailor on 6lb which was good fun.

It was in complete contrast to the day before where it rained non stop all morning.

Pretty unreal to think there are good fish in less than 2m of water. Might have to do a night run out there with some fresh mullet and see what comes along.

With the weather finally looking good I decided to head out from Hartmans in search of some new fishy ground.
Spied three other boats on the road on my way to the beach so I decided to launch from the Cosy Corner beach ramp instead, which turned out to be a good idea as there were already a heap of boats either on the water or launching from Hartmans.

Cosy Corner can be a pain to launch from but I was soon on the water and heading out at a strong pace towards an area that I believed would have to hold fish. I started out with jigs which resulted in a good solid hit (until the hooks pulled) then another strong strike that ended up reefing me.
I switched over to the heavy gear and bait and within minutes a nice sized Queenie was onboard, I missed another good hit and decided to head out deeper. On the move out deeper I managed to pick up a bonito (will become bait tomorrow) and a little tuna (bluefin maybe).

Now in 50 odd metres of water I zoomed the sounder in to the bottom 10m and looked around for any little changes in the ground, after a little while and few failed drops I found a little spot where it rose from 50m to 46m. Within seconds of hitting the bottom I was on and after a decent little battle my Pb Blackbum was onboard. After a quick happy snap I swung the boat around in search of the spot again (not easy with the current and no chartplotter) but soon enough I found it and had my bait on the way down.
Again within seconds of hitting the bottom I was on again, this time a little under sized Dhufish came up from the depths (and was quickly released)
Third drop on the spot and again I was on. This time it was something big, which had the tld25 and 50lb screaming (plus my back aching) a good 15-20mins passed before a big sambo came up, after the usual happy snap I swam it for a while before watching it cruise back into the deep blue to stretch someone elses back.

Now miles off the "spot" and with a dead camera battery I looked around for more ground in the area. Pretty much any lump no matter how small out there produced fish almost instantly. Including a few smaller Blackarse, a Harliquin, Flathead, another Queenie but since I dont have pics it never happened haha.

Cosy corner always has a bigger shore break than Hartmans. Had to hook the snatch strap to the boat and drag it up the beach today.
Beats having to battle with people and their 5-6m plus boats at Hartmans though.

Got out again today with a mate from SouthernWaOutdoors.
On the water by 7am with the plan of getting Paul (my deckie) some decent fish to take home as I was happy with my fish from yesterday.

Played around with jigs for a little while resulting in nothing for me but Pauls first, sgt baker, western blue devil and under size dhuie which he was more than happy about.
We shifted out to another spot and switched to baits, first drift saw me score a queen snapper, followed by a decent black arse from Paul. The next drifts resulted in more small blackarse, a big dirty wrasse that shat all over the boat and the biggest sgt baker I've ever seen. By the way it fought I thought Paul was on to a decent snapper haha.

After this Paul decided he didnt need his breakfast any more and fed it to the muttonbirds instead. To his credit he battled on and was onto a nice swallowtail and skippy shortly after. I hooked up on to a big sambo that just made the tld its bitch haha, just had no chance of stopping the bugger.

After rigging up again and seeing Paul drop a alright fish I scored my first double header of dhuies, sadly though they were both only 30-40cm so back they went.
I reset the drift and was quickly on again and yep up comes another little dhuie which was quickly released. Next drop and something with a little more grunt took the bait, after a short battle a much better dhuie came to the surface coming in at 51cm. So still not a gaint but legal nevertheless.

After that the action died off with the odd skippy coming up from Paul and a red snapper from me. Knowing that Paul was struggling with being crook and some fish in the esky, I decided to head back to the beach.

Total keepers were:
Paul: queen snapper, skippy and the dhuie
Me: swallowtail, red snapper and the blackarse.

Pics to come once I get them off Paul.

Got out yesterday morning for a quick landbased session before the weather turned bad.
Quickly picked up a big herring which was sent out under a balloon with no luck, also managed a half dozen or so just sized blackarse that were all released.

Decided to hit up my groper hole and was quickly smoked by a monster, after a few not so nice words I upgraded from 60lb leader to 100lb and cranked the drag up. Took a while but managed another bite resulting in a nice 78cm, 9kg groper.
With the weather taking a turn for the worse I quickly bailed before it started to bucket down.

Yeah the rod holders are pretty good, probably more suited to limestone rocks or rockwalls than granite ones down here though.

Under strict instructions not to go fishing this weekend I decided to change tactics and focus my efforts on the drains around the block.
So with Emily (our newborn) in the pram, a tin of cat food and a couple of drop nets I headed down to the drain, only had them out for a hour but managed to pick up two nice size koonacs and spy a half dozen more. Also saw a fish about 25cm long shoot off before being able to id it.
Now to wait until the sun sets and head back to the drain, maybe with a rod this time as well.

With the weather bloody perfect today I was allowed out after work for a quick fish as long as I was home before dark.
Shot out to my usual rocks with the heavy gear and a couple of poppers, after a number of casts with no success over the deep reefy areas and the sun setting I decided to make my way back to the ute and have a half dozen casts at a sandy spot that sometimes holds big tailor.

Third cast in I thought I saw something come up as the popper hit the water, I started a slow bloop and instantly a big shape zeroed in and smashed it, at first it had me thinking a big salmon but as the fight continued it was clear it was no salmon.
15 odd minutes later the fish seemed to tire and as it crossed in front of me I was able to id it for the first time...... I was onto a monster kingy of at least 30plus kilos and behind it was another of similar size. I started to make plans on where to land the beast, but it had other ideas taking off on another cracker run, I was able to stop the run but not the next as it took off again causing me to jump across rock to rock with an open bail. Finally it took me around a rock and the 80lb leader wore through.

A big kingy has been on my wish list for years and on a popper would've topped it off, not going to lie I was gutted and at least one tear was shed along with a few choice words.
Now to drown my sorrows with a few cans of export.

The beast looked me in the eye with all his mates behind him and he would of been as big as they grow I reckon. My blob popped up about 50m out and I wound it in shaking at the hands and knees. Wasnt able to get out early due to Emily being restless all bloody night, instead decided to have a drive out to the deeps after lunch to get out of the house.

Passed a couple of mates on the tracks who were heading home after picking up two sambos and three small blue fin on lures, arrived at the deeps and saw a few tuna jumping just out from the rocks but they wouldnt touch anything I chucked at them.

Had a group of five cars come down for a fish as well so I pulled the pin and headed home.

Well dusted off the cobwebs and headed out early yesterday morning to explore some new ground. Arriving at the beach just after 4am with the wind already picking up which had me questioning myself to head out deep or stay around my usual spots.
I launched the boat and set off into the thick fog relying on my $20 Navionics app to safely get me around the little onshore islands and shallow reef, seeing that there wasn't a huge amount of swell I decided to stick with the orginal plan and started the 15km trip to the first section of new ground. After a quick sound around I dropped a little 80gm jig to the bottom and was able to pick up two big sgt bakers that were to become bait later in the day, also scored two swallowtail for the esky before the wind made it too hard to jig.
So it was out with the bottom bashing gear baited with sgt baker and back into the swallowtail, kept another two sizeable ones from this spot and released four smaller ones. From here I moved to another spot about a km or so further out which resulted in more swallowtail, a red snapper and three good sized breaksea all destined for the esky. By now the wind was blowing hard and the chop had picked up so I had to keep the engine in reverse in order to keep the boat from drifting too fast, also meant the bildge pump had a good workout with stern facing the oncoming chop.

Spied a lot of sea birds further out to sea so went out to investigate and sure enough there were tuna feeding, but with them not wanting any of the lures I trolled past and too many whitecaps to pick out tuna to cast at I moved onto another nearby spot for a few last drops. Picked up three small 45-50cm snapper along with another swallowtail and a big scorpioncod. Lost what I think was a big snapper to the reef and another smaller one when I forgot to knock the engine out of reverse resulting in the line getting caught in the prop. Leaning out untangleing the prop in choppy conditions while being blown out to sea isnt much fun haha.
Decided to head back in after that as angry looking clouds were building up with more whitecaps forming, was a very wet trip home with lots of spray and a few airbourne moments but I never once felt like the conditions were too much for the tinny, ended up doing 45km for the day and only just used 20l tank which I'm pretty happy about.

No pics of the action as it wasn't the nicest of days to walk around the boat
