Well done Trav, what are the Swallowtail like to eat, similar to red snapper? I will be down with the family in January, might have to catch up for a fish. |

Swallowtail are unreal on the plate, rate them much higher than pinky, dhuie or king george. Taste similar to red snapper but a bit sweeter if that makes sense haha. Fish is down this weekend and the weather is looking good, time for more exploring out there. |

Was able to get out very early yesterday morning for a fish before the Easterlies picked up. Arrived at an empty Hartmans a little before 3am and was soon motoring out to further explore the ground I've been focusing on lately, there was a reasonable swell running but since there was no wind conditions were nearly perfect. I arrived at the spot and was quickly onto the fish, with two small pinkys, a queen snapper and three breaksea within the first couple of drifts. The action stayed like this for two hours or so with each drop on either jigs or bait producing good fish (besides sgt bakers) and me keeping only the ones that were in no condition to swim off. After sounding around the area I came across a small patch that jumps up from 45m up to about 23m so I decided to anchor up and burley up. From this spot I picked up another queenie, swallowtail and a little 58cm kingy while getting sharked on a soft plastic I had setup. I think I ended up a good number of metres from where I wanted to anchor up but I just couldn't be stuffed pulling it in again haha. As predicted the wind started to pick up and before too long it was time to head back in, but all in all it was a pretty decent morning out on the water. |

Dont get a huge amount of meat off the swallowtail, usually one decent size one equals a single feed. We're allowed a mix of 8 swallowtail and red snapper plus 5 demersals which makes them worth keeping. |

You'll do alright out of there Ezi. I watched a bigger boat try and retrieve for at least an hour and these guys knew what they were doing. They only just made it before total darkness set in. Swell came up during the day. Theres not much beach to work with at high tide and a bit of swell also gets super surgy. |

Headed out with Dan and two other boats yesterday for some tinny action, arrived at a weedy and little surgy Hartmans around 345am and were all on the water ready to go by 4. The swell and chop wasn't too kind on the way out with me thinking I should have taken everyone somewhere else a couple times, but with no protests over the radio and the weather forecast to improve thoughout the day we continued on to the fishing grounds. Things were pretty slow for me to start, with only a lonely sgt baker and blackarse coming aboard but some chatter on the radio of a couple queenies and a kingy meant the fish were around. Its a pretty big spot out there so I spent a fair while drifting and sounding around and eventually found a good ledge from 42-34m that was holding fish, first drop on it resulted in a nice queenie followed by a harliquin and swallowtail. Knowing that it was going to be a long day on the water I didn't want to bag out too quick so I traded the 50lb gear for the mrs's 2-4kg bream rod, 10lb and a little 40gram jig. Straight away I was on with another swallowtail coming to the surface, followed by another and another. I noticed another fish following the last swallowtail up so I quickly unhooked and dropped the jig over again, instantly about 10 little rat kingys were all over it and the fun began, after a hard 15min fight I was able to net my 75cm kingy and drop the jig straight back over for another hookup. This time a tiny 45cm rat was the first to the jig and was soon brought aboard and released, followed by two more around the 50-55cm mark. Great fun on light gear only metres under the boat. After these four the school buggered off so it was back to my dropoff for more swallowtail before switching back to the heavy gear, with various sgt baker, another queenie and a blackarse coming aboard and a big red snapper throwing a circle hook boatside. I moved along the ledge 30m or so and got smashed first drop, with the drag as tight as I could hold the fish just continued to take line ending up with my 80lb leader snapping, so I rigged back up, dropped again and....The same thing happened. More than likely big sambos but still would've been neat to find out. With the other two (bigger) boats gone home I headed over to see how Dan was going, well needless to say he was going well with a nice mixed bag chilling in the esky. We decided to head out a few more kms to another spot that has produced pinks for me before. Things were slow there with a little red snapper coming onboard along with a few wrasse, Dan had a school of little kingys around his boat so I dropped the little jigging setup over the side to see what was around, didn't get a kingy but instead managed a nice little tuna that put up a great fight before cooling off in the esky. Other than that the place was dead so Dan suggested we head back around the first spot again. This time I focused on the other side from where I was fishing earlier that day and first drop it paid off with a 67cm dhuie coming up from the depths, its been a fair while since I've had a legal dhu so I was pretty happy with it. With my bag limit of 5 demersals filled and fish on showing 10metres off the bottom I dropped over a 100gram jig to find out what they were. Didn't take too long to hook up and 10minutes later a nice little sambo was onboard for a quick pic before heading back down to the reef, dropped another shortly after before we called it a day and headed for the beach, arriving just before 3pm. Great day out on the water, with the smaller tinnys showing the big boats how to fish haha, looking forward to catching up with you again Dan, |

A great trip out Travis, thanks for showing me your area. You're not wrong on the weather side of things aye. 4m swell was just the small swell then when two would combine far out we were high up, then waves on top coming from all directions. It was interesting that's for sure. Luckily it calmed down slightly as the day wore on. Internet hasn't been too good here today so I'll leave my report and pics till I get home. We will fish again together sometime that's for sure The tinny Duo. |

Was exploring some new ground 3km n/e from where we went Dan. Found a spot that goes nearly straight up from 35m to 7m, be a nice area to anchor up at night. Anchored up at another spot a few 100m away where i got the pinky and nannys, also burleyed up a few rat kings and big skippy that werent keen on taking a bait. |

Been getting a little bored with my usual spots lately so hooked up the boat and went to Walpole early this morning, think I spent more time pushing the tinny over the sandbars in the inlet than motoring over it but I was soon past the breakers and out on the deep blue. Total results were: 8 pinkys between 35-50cm (released) 1 small queenie (released) 1 small sambo (released) 1 harliquin (kept) 1 swallowtail (kept) 3 blackarse (released) 28 Kingys between 65-100cm (kept two) 2 dhuies, one just sized (released) and one coming in at 9.8kg (kept) 2 unknowns and was bitten off twice as well. Can't believe its taken me three years to get out there, unreal place that is just full of fish. Will be back there very soon even to just fish the inlet. |

Cheers guys, Was probably 1.5-2km at the most out to sea, had a few spots I wanted to try further out but the weather couldnt make its mind to either go calm or blow its arse off. The inlet channel was a little interesting, only about 1.8m deep and maybe 3m wide. Tried to get a video heading out but the camera came off its mounting. Dont think the kingys get fished for often out there, just hammered the jigs all day with one even taking it a foot from the boat. And as for that dhuie I am over the moon with it haha. I'd just picked up a little sambo on the bait rod and got reefed on the soft plastics setup, so thinking i must of been on a school of sambos I dropped a 90g jig over the side in 21m and got smashed straight away, had me thinking sambo or groper on the way up, Made the mistake of trying to hold it by the gills for the photo to.... Now my hand is cut to shreds haha |

If you manage a nice day you'll have no issues Baz. Its safe to cruise right up to the inlet mouth and make your mind up from there to go out or not. Just shoot out to the islands and fish around them, heaps of little snapper and queenies around the close ones. I was using a Tekka Juno jig but i find most jigs from 40-100g in orange work well |

No tinny trip this weekend. Instead we were up in Perth for family catch ups and stayed at Golden Ponds, learnt that fishing isnt included in your accomodation and that you cant fish between 5pm and 8am, failure to stick to the rules results in a warning then eviction....... So Saturday 4am I was sneaking my way to one of the furtherest ponds for a flick, ending up with 7 bream to 35cm and a perch before 6am, tried for a hour late Saturday evening but had no luck. Did the same this morning for another 4 bream and 2 perch before packing up the unit. Decided to do the righty and pay for a days fishing for the mrs and I, tried the "best pond there" according to the guy at the shop for a lone little perch by the mrs. Headed over to the pond behind the campground which is crystal clear and spotted a school of perch, barra and bream in the weed. We both learnt that we shouldnt have using our favorite lures as the big perch took us straight under the weed. After chucking some old cheapo lures on we spent the next hour sight casting, I managed to land 4 perch and a bream, got weeded twice more and lost a nice 45cm barra, while the mrs was able to land 5 perch and got weeded once. Not a bad place to throw a few lures, just wish you could fish at night and have the fishing included in your accomodation price. |

With the weather looking nearly perfect I set off early this morning bound for Walpole. After navigating the channel nearly in the dark I headed towards some likely looking ground just to the west of the inlet. The action was very slow with only two small sambos, a 50cm pinky and a blackarse hitting the deck after a couple of hours. With it nearly glassed off I decided to head out deeper, thought about heading to the 80m mark but stopped on some ground in 60-65m. Again the going was slow but i did pick up a nanny as my first keeper, along with a 75cm kingy. Since I was getting tired of dropping in 60m for nothing I headed back in towards the islands. Noticed a heap of birds with some surface splashes so went in to investigate, first cast with the metal slice saw me get smashed by a nice tuna, turns out 12lb wasnt a smart idea for that one. As I was grabbing my leader from the console i checked out the sounder and it was just about covered with arches, so I swapped over to my budget jigging setup with 30lb, dropped the jig the 18m to the bottom, had two winds and was on. Soon enough a nice kingy was on the boat and released. That was the start of an epic few hours, every drop saw jigs get nailed with fish after fish coming aboard, it was bloody unreal seeing tuna, kingys, sambos and even a few massive pinkys in 12-20m of water. The kingys were nearly always first onto the jigs but every now and then something different would nail it and head home to the reef. Starting to run a little low on jigs i rigged up an old orange one with a slighty rusted hook, instantly the jig was smashed but not by a kingy, the unknown beast had my poor 8000oc baitrunner screaming and i was waiting for the line to ping, but by luck or skill (all luck i think) the line held and after 40mins and a few hairy moments (wind kept pushing me up towards the island and breaking waves) a massive sambo was alongside the tinny. After a few attempts I was able to pull it over the side for a few happy snaps before spending a half hr releasing it ensuring someone elses back will be pulled out of place in the future. Continued with the jigs for many more kingys before my arms, back and legs could take no more. I moved around the other side of the island where I was able to pick up a swallowtail and fox fish before calling it a day, battled my way though the tourists anchored up at the inlet mouth and headed on home for a sleep. |

Got out again this morning, had a look at the weather and while the swell was reasonably high there was bugger all wind forecast so figured how bad could it be? Turns out that a big swell makes Walpole into a bit of a washing machine, waves were breaking on the inlet channel and bouncing in all directions but I wasn't going to let that beat me. So it was power on, up over the waves and through the swell out to my spot, after getting use to the waves bash the tinny around I baited up with some left over kingfish belly and dropped it over the side. As soon as it hit the bottom I was on and before too long a nice little dhuie was in the esky on ice, I baited up again and after a number of drifts I had my next hookup, a double header of Harliquin which also joined the ice bath. The time ticked by with no more action but at least the swell had somewhat died off, I reset the drift a little further along the island and was on again. This time a much better dhui came up from the sea but since I already had my quota it was released after a quick picture. (i know where it lives) By now I'd run out of bait so I pulled out the jigs and shifted around the other side of the island where I found a nice spot going up from 25-13m, first drop resulted in a solid little kingy that was released, second and third drops brought a bit of a surpise with two little blue groper taking a liking to the pink jig, one was just sized and the other just under. Both were released in hope that a big blue might take the jig but that didn't happen. Instead I ended up with two little sambos and 5 kingys to end the morning with. So another successful tinny mission completed and more great fish for tea tonight |
