Joined up with a mate today for one last Walpole trip before I go back to work, arrived at the ramp just before 4am and soon my tinny was on the water ready to go. Then it was my mate and his deckys turn to launch, his boats normally a pig to get off the trailer so he's just replaced the rollers on it.
He made the rookie mistake of unhooking both the chain and winch rope before backing down the ramp and since the rollers work bloody well the boat slid straight off the trailer and onto the ramp. We winched it back onto the trailer and checked out the damage..... A nice hole about 40mm on the weld of the transom and bottom of the hull.

Lesson learnt
So we said our goodbyes and I continued out on my own, picked up my first dhu for the year (undersized) released a queenie along with three kingys, then kept two harliquin a big skippy and a groper. Not the massive blue I was after but my first decent sized one on jigs.
Could see fish on the sounder but just weren't interested in the jigs anymore, so I swapped to bait (skippy) and picked up anther two kings before getting nailed by what I think must of been either a big groper or dhuie, had full drag on the tld25 but I let the braid touch the hull and that was the end of that. Then got two big buffys so decided to call it a day.

Managed to get out on the water for the first time since new years on Saturday, left mine just before 3am and was heading out the Walpole inlet smack on sunrise.
Made my way out to my usual spot and played around with bait as I needed a few fish for the freezer, things were slow and only picked up a couple of blackarse and a small kingy before swapping to jigs. First drop resulted in a 45cm Dhuie which was happily released, then had a horrible next few drops which all resulted in lost fish, thinking either dhufish or groper from the runs.

Still with nothing in the esky I moved around to the ocean side of the island and quickly pulled up a nice harliquin before being busted off next drop, rerigged with a cheapo ebay jig and was on straight away. This time another small dhufish surfaced followed by a small sambo and swallowtail. Moved a little closer to the island (got to watch the waves) and dropped the jig again, within seconds I was on and before long a nice kingy was onboard, followed by a number of others. Also picked up some big skippy, another blackarse and a scorpionfish before the swell became too dicey around the island.
Headed back around the sheltered side to anchor up and have some lunch, hooked onto a nice kingy that wrapped itself around the sinker that was hanging over the side attached to the big rod, bugger had one last big run and took my big setup with it. Took that as a sign to call it quits and headed home.

Not too sure yet, wasnt really planning on having to get another setup so it'll be reasonably cheap and cheerful.
So far I've been suggested a few,
Tld again
Fin nor offshore
Shimano torium or tyrnos
Okuma solterra 2 speed

Actually liking the solterra 50w two speed at the moment for 199

Had planned to take my brother out today but he pulled out yesterday due to other commitments, so instead I packed the sleeping bag, coffee, food and headed out for an overnighter off Hartmans.
Trolled a couple of lures on the way out and was able to quickly pick up two bonito for fresh bait before arriving at my spot just as the sun started setting behind WestCape Howe. Did a bit of sounding around along with a few fruitless drifts then dropped anchor on some likely looking ground.
It didnt take long before I had my first bite with the new Jungle Stix bent over the side and line peeling off the penn 950. After going hard for the first few minutes the fish became a dead weight and before long a solid Dhuie was onboard and in the esky.
I baited up again and dropped the 45m to the bottom. Straight away one of the rods attracted some attention, this time by an arrow squid. I didnt have any squidjigs onboard so I had to grab the squid behind its head and not get inked.
I switched my led lightbar on and noticed a few more squid cruising around, ended up catching four by hand but would've loved a few of the smaller ones as live baits.

With one line loaded with squid and the other with bonito the swallowtail came out to play, with my limit going in the esky well before midnight. Also picked up another 51cm dhufish that was released along with a big dirty ray, eel and some monster skippy before winding in for a sleep around 2am.

Started fishing again at 5 but was plagued by big port jacksons, so I pulled anchor and spent a hour drifting around the place.
Had some fun with rat kingys, then landed another sized dhu and just legal pinky that were both released.
Decided to have one last drift before having a troll and hooked onto what I thought was a double of rat kings. So I didnt waste anytime winding in, only to find I had a little kingy and 57cm dhufish that wasnt going to go back down.
As the fisheries state a days limit is midnight to midnight it was into the esky for the dhufish.

Switched over to the trolling lures for the trip home where I had all three lines go off at once, after some good runs and some laps of the tinny, I had two little bluefin onboard.

With plenty of fish in the esky I headed back to the beach where the Albany sea rescue boats and skis were, apparently two people went fishing off west cape and only one came back, which put a bit of a downer on the trip. Details are still limited though.

Haha Dan I've left all the ground East of Eclipse Island untouched just for you, was actually trying to target pinkys and the tuna but lucked out on any big snapper.
Never seen arrow squid before, did drop a few I didnt grab just right as they were pretty aggresive and keen to try and bite. Have to remember to take a few jigs or prawn net next time to catch some bait size ones, unreal the amount of little fish, plankton and squid that came up with the lightbar on.

Weather is looking good so I'm wanting to do some exploring and hopefully find a few different fish this weekend.
Using my navionics app I've found this possible ground but if I zoom in nothing of interest pops up, except a bit of a drop off around the 58m area. I believe it may be a coral reef area but wondering what others think?
Dont really want to go out that far only to find sand

Did a little more searching with navionics and according to a lower zoom that area consists of a coral seabed. Very promising I think.
Also found another likely spot a few more kms out in 100-150m of water....

Headed out from Walpole early this morning to check out that ground in the above post, weather wasnt ideal to start with so I hung around the islands and played with a few kingys and picked up a skippy for bait.
Once the sun rose the wind and chop died off so I decided to start heading south. Got sidetracked by a big school of striped tuna so chased them around with the light gear before they went deep, managed to land five (kept two) and a bonito for bait.
Spent a bit of time sounding around but finally found a likely looking wall rising up from 73-68m, baited up with a chunk of bonito and squid then sent it over the side. Straight away I was on and sometime later a double header of 15kg sambos comes to the surface. Quickly released them and dropped again for another sambo, followed by another and another. Switched to jigs and picked up two blackarse before being smashed by I'm guessing another sambo.

Started getting tired of deepwater sambos so I moved out another km or so in 80-85m, couldn't find anything outstanding on the sounder but had a drop anyway. Dropped something solid and then got bitten off before hooking a big heavy dead weight. After what felt like a hour the culprit appeared, a massive lazy wobbygong shark at least 2m long. Was tempted to pull it aboard for a photo but decided against it, ended up cutting the line and watched it sink back to the depths.

Had another drop for no result so moved on, probably should of continued on to the shelf but instead headed west to a spot in the 50s. Found another boat on the mark so hung around a little spot a couple of kms away. Instantly hooked onto more unwanted sambos which was painful, so started heading back towards the islands.
Came across a school of bluefin and after 4 attempts I managed to get one for the esky, decided to have a jig for a kingy or two but they werent interested, did pick up a nice amberjack which is another species to tick off my list.
Decided to call it a day after that and headed home after doing 73km on the water.

I like the Amber Jack I caught. Thought it went well on the chew. Would keep another for sure.
Not a bad 1st run. Sounds like there would be some good ground around there. Hopefully without the Sambos.

Had some of the amberjack that night, found it less fishy than kingy and less dry than sambo. Would definitely keep one again.

Both are on my list to hunt down this year Goodie, dont know how many chances I'll get with the weather and my little Garmin sounder isn't really ideal for that sort of depth but I'll give it a crack.
Got an area about 45km offshore from Hartmans that looks ideal around 180-200m and another similar distance spot from Walpole in 130-150m. Doubt many if any tinnys have been out there haha.

Well the weather forecast was looking nearly perfect so I loaded up with 80litres of fuel with the plan of heading out to the start of the shelf for a look.
Was on the water at 430am and conditions were ideal, at least until I got out the back of West cape and discovered the forecasted 10knot westerlies were more like 20-25knots and had whipped up a fair amount of chop.

So I changed my plans and decided to hang around my old cliff spots as a number of big snapper have been caught landbased in the area lately. Unfortunately it just wasn't my day with a lone flathead and swallowtail coming aboard before I anchored and started to burley. This resulted in two big rays, two eels a undersized dhui and a few tiny blackarse.
After the second ray I pulled anchor and tried bottom bouncing every little bit of ground in the area for nothing at all, spotted a few bonito jumping so chucked out the trolling gear to try to salvage something from the trip out.
Luckly the bonito and salmon were willing to play the game and spent the next hour or so with triple hookups, tangled lines and some good light tackle fun.
Gave the demersals one last crack with fresh baits for no results before heading home.

Hit the water nice and early this morning planning on heading out to my usual offshore spot. But with next to no wind and a small swell I thought screw it and started heading out to the shelf instead.
For the next hour and a half I bounced my way the 43km (ended up being 50 with my crappy navigating) to a likely looking area going from 100-350m within a couple of km. Did a fair bit of sounding around before my first drop which resulted in nothing, as did the next. My third drop saw my first deepwater fish come aboard.... Damn Sambo. So I moved on to another bit of ground in 150-160m. Straight away I was on with nanni after nanni coming up (sometimes half a one)
Swapped over to jigs and picked up a few more nannies before the sharks made things too hard. Moved out deeper again but couldnt get past leatherjackets and more sharks. Finally decided to wire up the new tld30 and dropped half a salmon over the side (was a good idea at the time) and within minutes I was on. Gave the two speed tld a good workout for an hour until a 2.5m bronzie was boatside.
Too bad it wasnt smaller as it would've feeled my freezer nicely.
With a long trip ahead I set off for a two hour wet trip back to the beach, not the sort of trip you'd want to do every weekend but I'll definitely be heading out there again.

Hell yeah that's an awesome effort, slightly crazy but a good result. Even I haven't been our there yet, thinking it's a long way but will eventually do it. I went in to the local tackle store and told them I was thinking of hitting the shelf sometime, when I told them what size my boat was they thought I was crazy. They actually didn't want to help or give any information after that.

Weather was no worse out there than in close, just have to pick your day and be prepared to bail early as soon as there's any chance in conditions.

It is a long way and there isnt a lot of ground in between, but at the end of the day I probably am just crazy.

With the wind and rain around for the last few days I decided today would be an ideal day to check out one of my less known near shore spots. Woke up at 430am with it pouring with rain so switched the alarm off and went back to sleep for a couple of hours. Arrived down at the empty beach just before 7am with a decent shore surge and more rain, less than 15minutes later I had two bonito onboard for bait and was anchored up in 12m of water.
Didn't take long for my first hit but it was only a wobbygong, followed by another and then two rays which was a little annoying.
Finally I managed a nice little harliquin which made its way to the esky along with a 40cm breaksea. Action started picking up with a number of missed hookups and fish dropping the baits, whatever they were would hit the bait hard run for 15-20m then drop it. Also picked up two sambos, one around 10kg on the heavy setup which I called for a snapper and another around 20kg on the lighter 30lb setup that went nuts in the shallow water.

The wind really started to pick up along with the swell, so I called it quits around 1pm and made the long 2min trip back to the beach (wasn't much beach there though)

Headed out Sunday night for an overnighter but had to bail early due to the chop picking right up along with the wind, ended up with three rays and a couple of waves in the boat before heading home.
Was back at the beach Monday morning with much better conditions, decided against going to my usual spot incase the wind picked up so headed behind west cape instead. Picked up a bonito for bait and a nice bluefin on the way out, struggled to find much worth keeping with only two sized Blackarse from my first spot. Headed further along westcape for three undersized dhuies, Blackarse and a just sized pinky.
The wind started to pick up a bit so I headed in to a proven snapper spot and anchored up for a few salmon and a wobbygong.
By now the easterlies were blowing hard and the chop was back to a metre high and a metre apart, knowing it,d be a slow trip home I pulled anchor and set off with two lures out the back. Picked up another bonito and was just about to pack up when something a little bigger hit the laser pro.
After a decent fight I had a 10-12kg sambo boat side with a heap of his mates, I quickly unhooked it and tied a soft plastic to the jigging setup and dropped it over the side, within seconds I was on.
Ended up landing six in half an hour in five metres of water, usually sambos annoy me but in such shallow water they are heaps of fun.

That's still a decent catch good stuff. Bloody south west weather aye, got a bit annoying and nearly scary on my night trip to. Especially when I accidentally went to an area where it went from 40m deep to 16m shallow and a couple of big waves reared up on me. Luckily I wasn't anchored yet,and motor was running so I got out of there and went back to the islands.

With 30knot northerlies forcast all weekend, I didn't have high hopes on getting out. Hit the snooze button a few times Saturday morning before getting up and hitting the water smack on 9am.
The wind was blowing pretty hard but there was bugger all swell so I ducked out and anchored in a nice sheltered bay, had heaps of small 3-5kg tuna leaping around the place feeding on 30m baitfish. Tried tempting them with a Dr hook popper but missed the only two takes I had.

Had a short hookup on a fresh herring but was quickly bitten off, chucked a half tuna fillet out under a balloon after but no luck.
Decided to try for a flathead or king George with a snelled squid on the 30lb setup, picked up a few little Skippy before having it smashed just under the boat. Did a number of laps around the boat and got to test out my braid to backing knot before I managed to get another beast of a sambo boatside. Not quite as big as my last one but still around 18-20kg.

Rays moved in after that with 4 over a hour, wind started really getting gusty so decided to bail and face the wind back to the beach, couldn't get the anchor to hold while I got the Ute so ended up snatching the whole lot up the beach.
