Dont know how many chances I've had over the last few weeks but finally managed to land my first half decent soapy tonight on plastics.
Didn't measure it but was a great fight on 5lb main line with a 10lb leader, also picked up another smaller one before calling it a night.

Think the curse may have lifted, picked up another soapy tonight. Spotted another bigger one feeding along the banks but couldn't get a decent cast at it.

Got out in the tinny yesterday morning with a fair bit of swell about. Headed out to my snapper spot which didn't disappoint, seeing two pinkys hit the deck with both jigs and plastics doing the damage. Dropped another before things went quite.

Moved on to another nearby spot and quickly saw success with a bunch of big breaksea cod (kept two) along with two undersized dhuies, a nanny and a queeny. Dropped two good fish on the plastic and got bricked by what felt like a good dhuie, decided to call it a day after that and surfed a few 4-5m waves back to the beach.

That'll be the area, lots of good lumps around there that are worth a drop or two. Most of the dhuies I've caught there have been little 50-70cm ones, no doubt there's bigger ones there though.

Well its about time I update this thread with my recent fishy adventures.

Headed out to Walpole last month for the first time in a fair while, as usual the wind and swell was stronger and bigger than forecast but still managed to take home a couple of little kingys and a groper. Must have been a big shark cruising around as the kingys were very shy to take a jig or plastic, which is unusual for them there.

Then headed out off Hartmans a couple of weekends back where I caught up with Dan on another beautiful choppy, windy Albany morning. The fish were hard to come by but I was still able to eventually score a worthy bag to take home.

Then inbetween ocean tinny trips I've been spending a few hours on weekends and after work still trying to find my metre plus mulloway on the bream gear. I've seen photos on facebook of big ones taken on baits and have witnessed the smash mullet along the shallows, but so far I've had't any luck in scoring a river beast. Still íts great fun messing around with the countless little 40-60cm soapies on the 1-3kg rod and 5lb mainline.
Also found a few bream to help pass the time, most are only 25-30 runts but I did pick up a 36er last weekend which is a personal best on plastics.

Amazing how the pics make the ocean look calm aye, that was a rough day for sure. That Breaksea has a fat gut. That big Mulla will eventually come along. Maybe I'll get down the river one of these days and show you how it's done.😛

That breaksea was full of squid and a wrasse haha, yep it's hard to get a pic of just how rough the ocean gets down here.
Big fresh Mullet would result in a big mulloway I reckon, trying to score it on artificials instead though

Headed out bright and early yesterday with the hope of fair weather and lots of fish. Was quickly apparent that fair weather was too much to ask for as the odd whitecap was already forming which made me wish I'd packed the wet weather gear.
Weaved between the chop out to my first spot right on first light, set the drift anchor and dropped the jig over the side. The current and wind made it difficult but before long I had a swallowtail and a small harlequin on ice in the esky, I could see a few fish on the sounder (possibly kingys) but couldn't get a hit so I shifted another km along and set up.

First drop and I was on, going by the headshakes I called it for a snapper and sure enough a few minutes later a nice little pinky surfaced and was released into the esky.
This was followed with three undersized dhuies and a couple of breaksea cod before I moved on again.

This time I focused my efforts around a lump that quickly drops from 16-35m. After a few crappy wrasse and a sgt baker I hooked onto something heavy, straight up I called it for a big harlequin as there was very little fight. Was pretty surprised when a little groper popped up as they usually fight hard, cheeky little bugger had saved it's fight for onboard as it went nuts trying to unhook.
Reset the drift and immediately hooked up again, this time there were some good head shakes and runs before the bright blues of a queen snapper shone up from the depths, I'm not a huge fan of eating queenies but the extended family loves them so it was bled and put on ice to make up the final fish in my demersal bag.

Decided to head out behind westcape Howe to try and find a few of the big sambos that usually live in the area, had to be on the ball constantly adjusting my course and throttle in order to avoid getting too airborne with the oncoming chop, although there were still a few painful bone crushing impacts.

Notice a few flying fish along with some big schools of baitfish on the trip across when I came across a school of tuna. I grabbed the jigging setup and had a cast, picking up a nice stripey tuna which later went down great with a cold beer and splash of lemon.
I rigged up a plastic on the light setup and spent half an hour or so chasing them around without any luck. Finally got a hook up on something that was a fair bit bigger than the stripey which saw 130 out of 150yards of 12lb braid scream off the little sienna before I had the chance to run back to the outboard and give chase, I got perhaps 20m of line back before the tuna took off on another run. Was pretty helpless watching line peel off and the sliver of the spool start showing, with no more than three wraps of line left I locked up the spool and popped the leader. After that the school disappeared and I was left wondering what could have been.

Continued on to my sambo spot but found it completely barren, even a fresh tuna chunk went untouched. So I decided to call it a day and headed back to the beach.

Also been searching around for some likely deep drop spots to try to hopefully tick blue eye, hapuka off my tinny list and have a crack at a boardbill. Found two likely spots that just scream out fish.

First spot is a nice little lump about 45km offshore that pops up from 200-150m within a space of 100m or so.

Second spot is roughly the same distance but a little deeper, coming up from a 1000-760m over 4-500m. I know it'll be a complete blind drop down with a good few kg of lead but the thought of what could be there interests me. Especially seeing as another 2km south would put me in 2000m of water.
There's also a couple of likely areas around 200m on the way out if it's a bust.

I know the commercial fishermen out of Peaceful bay get hapuka out from there- they did mention that the shelf was very close inshore.

That first mark looks like the type of thing that would attract marlin in warmer climes. So your idea about a Gladius might be more than just a pipe dream.

I know the saddle back cod and hapuka are definitely around. There's a bit of a competition running lately to see who's going to be the first amateur boat to pick up a boardbill, been a couple of near captures but nothing landed.
Be unreal to pick one up on rod and real in a tinny, reckon a whole little tuna could be the way to go.

One drop and imagine if you lose your bait, its a long wind back up. Even just pulling up the sinker weight is hard work in those depth. An electric reel would be a worthy investment at those depths. Good luck and hope you pick a good day weather wise.

Not ready to take the step to electric reels yet haha, reckon wouldn't get the use out of one here.
Been told big whole baits like squid or swallowtail are the way to go, only live once so I'm keen to give it a shot

Got the tinny out early Saturday morning with the plan of trolling for tuna and anchoring up in shallow for a gummy and sambos.
The wind was forecast to hit 25-30knot easterlies so I started a near shore troll for a hour with no results, flicked a few plastics around a bait school in 14m but again had no takers. The wind seemed to be dying off so I decided to shoot out across the bay to one of my spots behind westcape Howe where I pulled out the jigs.

First drop resulted in a little sgt baker for the bait tank, followed by a nice little queenie, a bonito and a decent 40cm Skippy that was also destined for bait. Spied a few fish on the sounder so anchored up and dropped two fresh fillets of Skippy over the side, annoying the baits went untouched while I picked up two more Skippy on the bream gear and plastics.
The weather started turning nasty with the odd whitecap breaking over the bow, so I thought I'd better bail and bounced my way back in towards the beach where I anchored up in 10m at a spot I've picked up both sambos and gummys in the past.

Cast out a couple of baits and settled down to wait for a bite, got bored pretty quick so had a play with the light gear and plastics which saw a few small black arse, a nice harlequin and two good flathead come aboard. Also jagged an eagle ray which surprised me about how much hurt you can put on a fish with 8lb.
Only managed two more rays on the baits before I tripped over and smashed my foot on the esky and got drenched with a good 50odd litres of water over the bow and called it a day.

Another average day in the south west, sounds like a bit of an adventure again. Hope the bilge pump was working. It must have been fun getting the boat back on the trailer with a smashed foot in the surf. If you ever need a hand cause something goes wrong give me a ring and I'll come down.

I've got the beach retrieve down to a fine art now, I just run the tinny straight up onto the beach on a wave, cut the engine before it hits the sand, then just back the trailer down, line it up and sit on the tray as I winch it up.
If I get around to it I'll buy a little atv winch and install under the ute tray, will make it nice and easy then.

Finally got a quick break in the weather Saturday morning so decided to hook up the tinny and head out off cheynes beach.
Hit the water very early and was greeted to nearly no wind and very little swell, so I figured it was an ideal time to shoot the 45 odd km out to a spot I'd found on navionics.

I cruised out under the cover of darkness at a steady 25-30kph and arrived on my lump coming up from about 250-130m. I searched around watching the sounder until I settled on a spot in 150m to warm up on.
Dropped the 14/0 circles baited with squid, lumos skirts, lumo tube and 32oz weight down and was quickly onto something small, which turned out to be a tiger flathead.

I rebaited and dropped again, a few minutes passed until I hooked up again. This time it was a green eyed shark, first one I've come across which was pretty cool but that fondness soon disappeared when it came apparent that the buggers were everywhere.
I tried various depths over a kilometre ranging from 130 through to 250m but I couldn't get away from them. I briefly pulled out the big jigs which saw me hook up to something very solid but once it learnt it was hooked it had no intention of coming up.

I'd planned on fishing a reef just behind the island but since there was already another boat there I steered clear and found some likely looking ground in 40m. Spied a school of fish on the sounder, so pulled out the 100g jigs and dropped down.
Immediately picked up a small 80cm sambo before hooking up to a much better one next drift. The little avet copped a good workout as I'd gain a few metres then loose it just as fast, I kept my patience and was eventually rewarded with a fat 106cm fork sambo which was released after a fair bit of reviving.
After that the wind picked up so I took shelter behind the island and pulled out the bream gear for my limit of herring and a Skippy before calling it a day.

Not the most successful day out but some more deep water experience and spots found, I'm still optimistic about my blue eye and hapuka before too long.

There's a fair bit of planning and research involved before I head out on a trip like that. Knew that if the wind did unexpectedly pick up it would've been over my left shoulder, so I would've been able to surf my way home.
Going to have to upgrade the sounder soon as the little garmin I have only picks up the bottom at idle in 150-200m then gets very patchy after that and I want to go out 300+metres
Got my eyes on the elite 7 hdi with the 50/200khz transducer and get around to installing the elite 5m chartplotter I have sitting here.

There'd have to be the usual dhuies, queenies, nannies etc around there. Don't know how heavy the place gets fished but there is lots of good looking ground in close.
Drops off to 60m quickly behind the island so anything is possible.
