Nice going Trav. Good to see you're still catching a heap of fish. You will find most sounder so will only pick up at idle at that depth unless you have a 1kilowatt transducer.

Might look a little strange with a 1kw transducer hanging off the back of the tinny haha, heard of a few guys being able to pick up 1500m with the lowrance hds's and a 1kw transducer.
From what I understand the p66 is a 600 watt which is plenty for what I want and is pretty cheap as well

Weather was looking good yesterday so I hit the water before 3am planning on finding a coral reef in around 80ms.
The light Nor Northeasterlies made for a very pleasant trip out but I couldn't locate the reef (think I was too far east still) so I continued south until I reached a spot on the edge of the shelf in 120-150m.

My first couple of drops came up empty handed but like my trip off cheynes the other week, it was a humble flathead that got the ball rolling.

After that I found a likely spot a few metres further along which was showing fish life just off the bottom. Had another drop and immediately hooked up to something good that didn't want to come up, I'd gain a few metres then loose it again which had me guessing what it was the whole time.
Eventually a big queeny was along side which was a bit of a surprise, needless to say I was pretty happy with it.

Next drop saw my tld fail yet again (back to the shop tomorrow) so it was out with the tyrnos and a 350g jig. Didn't take long before the nannies took a liking to it with hits every drop.
Landed six nice ones on the jig before deciding to adventure out a little further in search of more species.

Had a few drops at various spots between 250-300odd metres but the green eyed sharks made an appearance so it was time to move on.
The wind switched around to the SSW so I had a couple more drops nearer to where I picked up the nannies, had no dramas getting bites but couldn't hook up, did manage a jackass morwong which was another fish to tick off my list.

After that it was time to call it a day before the wind picked up too much. Had no issues sitting at 30kph surfing towards home.
Couldn't help but to have a quick look at my sambo spot up against the cliffs where three good looking fish showed up on the sounder.
Pulled out the jigging gear, reset the drift and had a drop which resulted in a little queenie that was sent back home. Dropped again and was immediately on, first couple of winds were just a dead weight before the fish woke up with a few powerful runs back to the bottom. After that the fight became more samboish but something in my mind kept thinking it's a demersal.
Was pretty happy when a solid dhuie popped up alongside the tinny, it's not uncommon for dhuies to be on that spot but most are either just sized or under.
Thought about doing one more drift but decided against it and called it a day

Haha yeah I could've probably caught just as many fish/ species in my usual close spots but I get bored of the same thing week in week out.
Got to mix things up every now and then

Ticked off my Xmas holidays to do list (get stupidly drunk at lunch with the inlays, boxing day test and Perth scorchers 20/20) so teamed up with my brother for an early morning assault on the kingys off Walpole.
Hit the water just on sunrise with a very low tide which not only gave us bugger all room for error in the channel, but also made the river mouth crossing pretty interesting.
Told my brother to hold on as we gunned it through a couple of metre high breaking waves before making our way out to my usual spot and brought out the light jigging gear.

Using 40g jigs it wasn't long before we both hooked up and were eventually reefed on 12lb, so we switched over to 40lb but the fish just switched off. Tried multiple spots with jigs, plastics and baits but struggled to find anything with only a few Skippy, undersized groper and a swallowtail coming aboard.
Headed out further west where we were plagued with just sized or just under pinkys, we decided to anchor up and burley on the lump with big baits to see if anything bigger would come along. I picked up.a better pinky on a herring while my brother scored a couple of harlequin and a small dhuie.

With the day getting on we pulled anchor and continued west in search of kingys. Found some likely looking ground near a small rocky island with fish showing but they just wouldn't bite.
Finally managed to hook up to solid kingy on the jig which gave me a good workout and some fillets for the esky.

Did a lap around the island jigging the whole time but didn't have any more luck, by now the sunburn had kicked in and I could tell that my brother was ready to call it quits.
Decided we'd have one last jig on the same bit of ground we got the kingy, I was instantly onto a good fish which I was pretty sure wasn't a kingy. While my brother was also onto a good fish judging by the bend in the rod.

Both did a few laps of the boat fighting our fish which saw me land mine first, a Pb groper on jig.

I hauled my fish over the side and kicked the motor into gear to get us away from the approaching rocks, which also helped bring up my brothers stubborn fish.
After a couple more runs we finally had his fish boat side, a nice 12-15kg sambo which is his biggest fish, we took a quick picture before swimming it and watched it cruise back down to the reef.

From there we called it a day and headed home

It was a pretty frustrating day really, usually Walpole is fish after fish but we had to work hard for that lot.
Headed out with a mate and his boys off two peoples bay yesterday (can't believe it's taken me four years to get out there)
Unreal looking ground out there with lots of fish on the sounder, but again fish were hard to come by. I picked up a nice little dhuie on the jigs along with a few little swallowtail and black arse, also got reefed by what I'd call for a big dhuie or groper (played it off as being a sambo to avoid sledging haha)
The others stuck to baits and picked up a few nice 50cm breaksea, swallowtail and nannies along with a Skippy and various other wrasse etc.

Was an enjoyable morning out with perfect conditions and a bit of a change from taking my tinny out and about.

Another average southwest trip again, well done. Yeah some good ground out Two Peoples side aye. I've hit it a few times but still launch from my local ramp. Only takes a bit over an hour or so. Probably just as quick or even quicker than driving all the way around by car then beach launching.

Found it to be a nice easy beach launch there, much easier than Hartmans anyway. Only hit up a few spots within 15mins from the beach up to 55m, think I'll be heading back out that way for my next trip.

Decided to start calling it a day and dropped by another deep hole which I've done alright at before. Had three casts and hooked up to a much better fish that had me dancing around the tinny with the drag screaming.
Managed to stop it's runs and even got a glimpse at my fish before it took off again straightening my jighead. Needless to say there were a number of words used to vent my anger at loosing a 90+ cm mulloway haha.

Might have to give in and upgrade to some heavier gear. Thinking a 5000 stradic, 3-6kg zeikel light spin rod, 20lb braid and a zipbait s.s.m 120 might be a goer for the big buggers.

Got out a couple of weeks back, again teaming up with my brother for another trip off Walpole. Plan was to camp out at the river mouth and play around with some small stuff on the bream gear along with possibly a mulloway then head out wide south off Chatham island.
Things started off well with the wind dropping off and the sun shining, we picked a nice spot on the sandbank to pull the boat up and set up camp, then we hit the flats with surface lures, had a few hits but couldn't hook up on them. Also spotted a few rays, dolphins and prawns but no luck with the fish. Then decided to walk around to the river mouth to try for a tailor which is when things started going downhill.
Dropped my phone out of my jacket jumping over a wave then noticed some lightning out towards Denmark, quick check on my brothers phone confirmed that a thunderstorm was building but heading out the the east of us so no dramas there.....

Got back to camp and were just about to crank up the BBQ when a lightning strike to the west of us caught my eye, quickly followed by another towards the Walpole townsite. Another check of Dylan's phone saw that thunderstorms were brewing up all around us, this lead to quickly loading the boat, covering the rods and having to decide whether we should try making a dash across the inlet back to the car or try taking shelter across the river up against the rocks.
With the light fading and me picturing us stranded on a sandbar we opted to shoot across the river and moored up on a little jetty, had a couple of unnerving moments unloading our gear out of the tinny with lightning all around but soon enough we were set up and the sausages were sizzling.
All rugged up in our sleeping bags we sat back and watched the thunderstorm pass over us, witnessing a number of strikes very near including one near where we had earlier set up camp. Then the rain began which saw us call it a night, pull the sleeping bags up and try get a few hours sleep.

Woke a little stiff from sleeping on the jetty but were back on the water just before 3am ready to take on the inlet crossing. The tide was very low which gave us nearly no room for error, but with the aid of a torch and a bit of instinct we were soon safely out and headed fishing. At first it seemed like the weather man had again got it wrong as it was extremely choppy trying to motor out between the islands struggling to sit any fast than 15kph, but we battled on with dawn beginning to break. As we bounced past point nuyts the weather seemed to instantly calm down to a near glass off and we were able to crank the tinny up to a leisurely 38kph.

Finally arrived at the grounds and had a sound around while Dylan cooked up some breakie. Settled on a lump coming up from 50-28m and had a drop, straight away we were on with Dylan landing a small sambo and me a break sea cod. Did a few more drifts for similar results along with a nanny before moving a short distance to another lump with fish showing.
Again it was fish on as soon as the jigs hitting the bottom, this time we'd come across a school of 80-90cm sambos with double hook ups each drop. Manage to land about 8 or so between us and moved on again.
Dylan decided to switch to baits while I stuck with jigs, he picked up a few big breaksea and two 60cm snapper while I scored a 50cm dhufish and a horse of a sambo that had me doing laps of the tinny which came in at 117cm to the fork.
Had a few more drops but no further luck, would of loved to explore the area more as it shows as a coral bottom over a good 10 or so km area, but the mornings trip out bouncing into the chop had used a good amount of our fuel and knowing the wind was forecast to pick up later in the afternoon I didn't want to risk it. So we headed in for a look around chatham island for future overnight camping possibilities.

Tried some ground just south of the island but had no real success with only a few swallowtail hanging around, then headed right up against the island where we pulled out a Queenie and more breaksea cod. The wind quickly picked up so we pulled the pin and surfed our way back towards home, stopping by goose island to check on the resident kings.
Rigged up our light jigging setups and were instantly smashed and soon reefed by something a little bigger than a rat king. Switched back to the heavier gear and had a quick drop and retrieve, revealing a school of kingys with some serious monsters hanging around as well. I finally managed to hook onto a little one that came straight for the boat before going nuts while Dylan tried to tempt one on stickbait, had a few very neat strikes but they weren't overly interested. Picked up a few big Skippy on the jigs and we both had the monster kings steal Skippy straight off the jig but they wouldn't take anything with a hook in.
Frustrated, tired and burnt we called it a day and surfed back into the inlet with an esky of fish and some good stories to tell (although we might just skip the getting stuck in a thunderstorm part when telling his mother)

With the forecast looking decent I made plans to head out to my snapper spot for an overnighter, ended up being held up at work so I decided I'd have a few hours sleep and head out early morning.
Launched under the cover of darkness and cruised out arriving at my spot around 3am, had a few drops with a glow in the dark plastic and baits but there wasn't a lot going on. Switched to a Loco Lures 160g purple\glow jig and shifted a few metres for the next drift, must have landed right on the sweet spot as every drop resulted in fish. Picked up five Pinky's along with little dhuies, breaksea cod, skippy and swallowtail.
Also pulled the hooks on what felt like a solid dhuie which seemed to shut everything else down, so I headed over to a small patch of ground I'd wanted to fish for a while consisting of two lumps coming up from 55-45m.

Things looked promising with lots of fish showing and a quick drop of the jig comfirmed the sounders reading with more swallowtail, Skippy and break sea cod coming on board. Got reefed by what I called for a groper and again this seemed to shut everything else down, with the wind picking right up I set the trolling rods up and started heading back towards sheltered waters in hope of a tuna or bonito for future baits.

Spotted a few surface breaks from tuna but they weren't interested in any of the lures I was using. Had a quick stop by my sambo spot but they weren't there, did pick up a just sized dhufish and a goatfish which were returned for next time. After that I decided to call it a day and headed back towards the beach, had two dolphins surf along side for a hundred metres which was pretty neat. Also just happened to see a lone tuna attacking bait just out in front of me, so i rigged up a Ricks fish on plastics 3in curly tail and had a cast.
Didn't take long for the tuna to take interest and I was on, instantly started to regret grabbing the bream gear as line screamed off the cheap seinna reel. Had to give chase in the tinny a number of times before landing my best south coast tuna in 15minutes. Had a bit of luck on my side as the jighead was nearly bent straight haha.

Overall not a bad day out on the water.

Great write ups Trav, when you were at Walpole I was watching the storms from home. I said to my wife that you were out there somewhere in that. We thought we might have to send out a search party. Sounds like a exciting trip. As to your last trip out I berlied the spot up for you earlier aye, saw all the fish on the sounder but wouldn't bite much so I shifted. Dam I knew I should've stayed just a little longer, it was the most fish I'd seen on the sounder for a while to. Good to see you clean up.

Haha yeah that Walpole trip was a little interesting, there was nothing forecast about thunderstorms when we left Albany and conditions were perfect when we arrived. Only took 30minutes tops to brew up all around us.

Still trying to work out exactly what fires the fish up off Hartmans there, you'd think you'd clean up out there at night but I've only had one good overnighter out there.

Saw a small window of opportunity to get out yesterday before the weather was forecast to turn to crap, so I hooked the boat up headed down to the beach and was ready to go by 330am.
Conditions were deceptively good with very little swell and a light norwester blowing which if I didn't know better could've seen me cruise out to the shelf, but nearly five years of fishing the south coast and studying weather patterns I resisted the urge and stuck to my original plan of staying in the shelter of the cliffs which would give me a straight and quick trip home when the weather kicked in.

Reached my spot and had a few drifts which showed a good thick school of bait along with patches of some bigger fish. Picked up a few swallowtail on the heavier jigging setup so I swapped over to the 6lb bream gear and a little 30g jig.
Had a ball with swallowtail, a bonito, Skippy and a solid little Queenie which put up a great fight.

Got nailed by what I think was a sambo on the light gear and lost my last micro jig, so it was back out with the avet setup and 100g jig.
Scored a just sized dhuie which happily swam back home after a quick pic, must be a heap of them around as I always get a couple when I fish there.

After sweating my way through Saturdays supposed 26 degree heat (36.5 when I checked at 1pm) I made up my mind to hook the tinny up and head out on an overnighter.
Headed out to my snapper lump but had the sounder die on the way out (water inside the screen) so knowing I had one good spot marked on GPS I continued out and rigged the jigging combo up which would hopefully allow me to pin point some ground to anchor up on.
First drop and I was on with a just undersized dhuie making its way onboard and quickly released, I reset the drift over the little lump and dropped again. Within seconds the jig was smashed and line started peeling off the little avet 5.8. I quickly called the fish for a big groper due to its short powerful runs and heavy weight (was wishing for a dhuie though)
After pushing the 40lb leader and my knots to the limit the fish gave in and the battle was over with my pb groper of 97cm safely onboard.

Had another few drifts over the spot for another little dhuie and swallowtail before deciding to anchor up in the failing light.
Action wasn't flat out but enough to keep me keen with a number of rays, shark species and the odd swallowtail coming up from the depths, had an led setup in the water and the number of small weird and wacky creatures attracted to it was unreal. Scored a squid that came up to the light which was released back to the bottom with a 10/0 circle hook through its back.
Just after midnight the squid bait was smashed and 50lb braid started screaming off my fin nor 100lt, managed to turn it reasonably quickly and called it for another little bronzie. Started gaining line on it and got my first glimpse of the beast in the led light, not the shark I was expecting but a very respectful snapper coming in at 86cm to the fork.

Over the next hour or so I had another two good snapper runs on pike fillets but failed to hook up, then everything died off so I decided to call it a night.
Woke just on dawn to a strong westerly which would have made drifting nearly impossible, so knowing I had another few hours before having to pick Megan up from the beach I pulled the sleeping bag back up and had a sleep in.
Eventually I had to get up, pull anchor and bounce my way to the neach, where I picked Megan up and headed back out along the shelter of Westcape howe.

After picking up a few bonito on the troll we started drifting up against the cliffs where Megan scored her first solid harlequin

It was pretty clear that I'd lost my touch after 19hours on the water as I struggled to pick up anything, finally managed a little dhuie on plastics on our last drift before we started making our way home. Scoring more double hookups on bonito as we went, overall a pretty successful trip out
