whipped up a couple of assist hooks for my whiting lures last night, wasn't trying to make them pretty, just wanted to see what was involved.

80lb braid and #6 gamma octopus hooks. Biggest issue was getting the braid through he hook eye.
These are too long i think but should be ok on the belly hook.

S**t hot Kiwi!
we used the XT assists last year to good effect but anchored them on the back and did away with the front hook.
i did buy a crapload of silicone tabs to make my own but just stuck with the braid onto the o'shaun hooks. work a treat!

goddamn they look good! time to tie?

I did a bit of trialing with assist hooks off SP's last year with braid and small hooks. Had some success but they didn't look anywhere near that good.

surprisingly quick to tie really, 5 - 10 minutes i suppose. No vice required.

I was having a think about it today at work, this is what ive come up with as the easiest way.

1 tie your braid in a loop and supa glue the knot. Im using 80lb

2 Loop a hook of choice to each side of the loop then double cats paw the middle to a split ring.

3 select 2 rubber legs and fold in half to give 4 strands, im using some rubber fly tyng material and a spinner bait replacement skirt.

4 tie down the legs/antennae to the braid at the bend using bobbin holder and flat waxed thread, tip:pinch thumbs on each side of your tie down spot and swing the bobbin around itself in a circular motion.

5 whip finish, supa glue and trim legs/antennae to length

Awesome Kiwi thanks for that. Definitely going to have a crack. they look amazing.

Here is my setup progression from last year and my current flats lure box minus the plastics.
the 1-4 are in order of what i started with to what im using now. 3 & 4 are my current go to lures and the hook system works well with good hook ups. My assist hooks there are tied straight from the coughfishwreckedcough how to tie assist hooks page. the only problem i find is i havent secured them well enough to the split and they do pull up and down (shorter and longer)
The Atomic K9's are excellent lures for me and have by far produced the most fish. That RMG 35 in jelly prawn colour is also a must have. fish that arent hitting the surface lures will go that any day and flounder like them too. (not that ive caught a flounder yet)
ive also added a sugar lipless in pure white today to the stack. I still have quite a few trebles to change out as you can see from the photos but ive just had this most fantastic and random idea on how to tie some assists ;) :P so ill get onto that very soon.
hook size wise ive been leaning towards a bit bigger than i thought. the xt assist hooks are damn tiny but work fantastic. Bit expensive at 10bux++. They also dont like teeth so the odd tailor destroys them.

i only started this caper in about january this year and it was (and still is) a steep learning curve for me and a totally new form of fishing. Ive always been a boat, burley and bait kinda fisho. But all it took was one session of the YFW and i literally was hooked. tense and exciting. Dave and i have considered renaming it to HIYC because when they start swatting and following and slurping at the lure without hookup you inevitably start yelling out "HIT IT YA CNT!" def gets the heart pumping.
i love all the discussion. learning so much more every day.

im dead keen to get out there with you fellas!

Kiwi youre a champ. I had a go a your assist hooks last night and although i didnt have the right hooks handy it looks great. Well ok for a first attempt. I need some work on my binding thats for sure. I only had strong cotton handy and superglue was substituted for sally hansons hard as nails which works very well.
Ill grab some gama occys tomorrow and get some on my lures.

Pic is the end result. bear in mind the hooks were just spare mustad demons and there is no intention to actually use them.

Looks fine to me, I'm pretty sure the fish don't give a flying F**k about your binding, they will just want to smash that thing off the surface. At least with the loops you can change the hooks over without destroying all your other work.

Hi all, My bit for what's it's worth.

Wookie and I have been playing with these assist hooks for a while and the only thing I would change is tying the braid to a solid ring rather than a split ring, gets rid of a couple of sharp edges.

I reckon by getting rid of the trebles and using these my catch rate has gone from 5 out of 10 to 8 out of 10. Plus my shirts and fingers are a lot better off.

Also starting to think that the lure colour and style is of no consequence. Clear stick baits are as effective as anything I use except of course my go to pick of the bunch. An $8 from BigW RMG Scorpion Jelly Prawn.

Will post my session results tomorrow arvo.

Wow! Great work guys - love the idea of using assist hooks - rather than trebs or Ws - especially circles rather than J's and as has been said, a lot better for the fish, the hook up and yourself. I always swapped the hooks on my skirt rigs to straight bait hooks (Gama, Black Magic and the like). Must get round to doing this with some of my lures.

Another advantage is that if you are fishing snaggy rivers you could use FC perhaps lighter than your leader - that way you'd loose a hook - not your HB - thoughts on that idea guys?
Kind Regards

good stuff rob! what size were the beasties?
im gonna TRY to get up and get a couple of hours in at mandurah before work.
Not sure if im going to hit up coodanup or 'spot bentley.' So very keen but just getting time this fortnight is a challenge. Getting home at 2am or later every night just makes getting up for a fish that much harder.

Colin im not sure about the circles on the assist hooks. Im thinking they might not be as effective. Can always give it a go i guess but my thoughts are the circles would not set as often as the sui's. if they do hook up it would be a damn sight better connection though, youre right.

Good one Dave, Do you run a hook on the belly, rear only or both?
Only on the rear, the lures are that small that I found mid and rear would tangle with each other nearly every cast, just rear tangles with line maybe every 3-4 cast. A pain in the but but much better hook ups and landing rates.
Not sure about the use of circles or whether they're required. With the stinger, the fish has no leverage against the body of the lure and I reckon if there is a solid hook up it will stay pinned.

To me this is a fascinating sport and to discuss it with like minded fisho's is a privilege never experienced by me, at least with any other facet of fishing.

I've been around the traps for a year or 9 and it's only the last 12 months that I have used any thing less than 15 pound gear off the beach. I am waiting delivery of a Pflueger Trion with K guides rated at 2-4 and 7ft. Using it with a 2500 Stradic FJ on 4 pound and 6lb leader but I can see an upgrade in the wind.

Thanks to Jake Burden for the introduction to it and to Wookie for providing the thrill of the contest and creating the drive for me to wop his arse. (AGAIN) (Jeez Dewar's Blue is a good drop)

Will post my session results tomorrow arvo.
Weekends effort was 9 hours, 6 locations for 1 x 32cm Bream, (1st on SP for me) and one x herring.

Miserable return for the effort but still enjoyable, especially better knowing Wookie was working.

I've been playing around with assist hooks for a while now, I find my hook up rate has gone up 50%

What I've been doing is removing both trebiles and cutting up a bait chaser rig and tie one hook onto the rear. This season have been using Owner rigs with a size 8 hook with 12lb, cheap ($4.00) and easy. Try to tie them on so that the hook eye is about 10mm behind the lure.

Knot as nice looking as Kiwi's but do the job.

Spangled Emporer
went out last sunday at 12 for a cpouple of hours casting all these thiungs and more. Dropped a nice yfw in first ten minutes then couldn't raise a thing. Was just after high tide so I reckon that and the middle of the day a factor. Had a good tailor follow a berkley puppy dog in Cerberus. Bit off weed on it and he shied away at the boat.
Had a bit of an expensive disaster too. I usually take an icecream tub or similar and as I use lures I put em in there too wash and dry brfore returning to storage. Forgot the tub so was sitting them on a bucket lid on the tinny seat. Moving spots one time and the damn wind picks it up and flips it over. Im telling myself I only lost 6 lures.... The floaters ok. Bassday crystal minnows and poppers, some 3b stickbaits... along the edge of the island opposite mandurah keys...

And I lost a brand new ocean potion stick bait to an eye wrap at the beach this morning. Swam for it but viz no good. They good stickbaits. Sinking in grey and silver mullet colour. Not often you have the gulls and terns chase a lure right up to the rod tip.
Best bit is missus saw the whole thing and is now sympathetic towards my requirement for a quality 3 - 4000 10 - 20 lb
high speed spinning reel now...:) Even understands the new 5000 stella is the next size up. Gotta get to complete anglers sale today while the iron is hot!!!
