Gday all, I have booked a spot on 1 Blu lightning. I am chasing any info you might have that will make my bait stand out from the rest of the pack. I am thinking back corner of the boat if I can snare it, my own fresh bait(squid n scalies) and will be using an o/head with 30lb braid. May bring the fin nor os9500 spooled with 50lb mono. Heading out on the 17th dec and by chance the anglers maniac reckons its gonna be a good day, but i think its what i make of it. So please tell me if i should or shouldnt use braid, use their bait or not, make my own rigs and what type of hooks, sinkers and any other info you may be able to provide me with, anything at all. I will read and consider everything. I am only going to get out what i put in and i figure this is the BEST place to start. Cheers Adam |

Ive only done a few charters but i like getting the spot up against the cabin of the boat. No one to one side of you, can usually have a chat to the skipper and have a few things to hold onto. I've taken my own rod and reel (i feel more comfortable using my own gear) but i use there hooks, sinkers etc, (saves a few bucks in lost gear haha) Braids the way to go, we were in well over a 100m on apache charters when ive been out with them |

The last charter I went on I swore I would never go again without my own gear and bait. They had crap rods with alveys and heavy mono with blunt stainless hooks. Also the wind was howling and the sinkers were too light. My advice, take your own gear and rigs and bait. Use a heavier sinker than everyone else so you get to the bottom first. I would be using braid as the feel when fishing deep tells you so much more than mono. |

if youre fishing deep i like a bit of glow on my rig somewhere too. doesnt have to be bright, just a point of interest to the fish. Doesnt scare the fish away and may make your bait stand out. a bit of bling above your hooks can help too. maybe a squid skirt or something like that. Im yet to go on a charter that ive enjoyed so i hope you can come back after a great day and with a solid recommendation. |

yeh, as said above. Take own gear....generally their bait is ok, but if you're going for presentation i'd take your own too. take some jigs too if you want to target a species, i found myself hooking up to fish while the bait users weren't. |

Awesome, thanks fellas. Some real good fish catching advice. I will definatly be taking ALL my own gear and using the bigger sinker on my braid with my sharp hooks. Makes sense. Really appreciate the input. |

Bait quality/gear all comes down to whether the operator gives a shit. If you take your own gear and bait, at least you know it's not going to fail/baits fresh as you're going to get. I worked on a boat just out of school where the skipper was re-freezing old bait over and over again, using blunt hooks and it was reflected in our catch rates. Punters were getting sent home with Seargent Baker ffs. |

Holy sh1t Moohan, thats crap. It wasnt the boat I mentioned? My skipper is the son of ex owners of M*lls Charters... if i'm allowed to say who they are. I will go to my local and be buying fresh then if I dont have any in the freezer. What do people reckon for bait, I am seriously after dhu's and schnaps so I am thinking of a squid and mulie or scalie C**ktail on 6/0 hooks. To snell or not to snell? Paternoster with 1 snelled dropper and the lower dropper with an octojig or flouro jighead? |

Nah Chilli, the skipper and I parted ways after sharing some heated home truths and I saw the business advertised for sale a few months later. I'd like to think he realised he didn't have a passion (or anything resembling client interpersonal skills) for it and got out of the game completely. I've never been out with M**ls, just go on what punters on the forums have said in the past. Was that who you went with Lefty? :p |

Chilli....if you're targetting Dhuies, I'll give you a few things to consider. 8-9/0s with occy/squid. Big floppy baits and double dropper with double snell because nothing worse than dropping down and bait dislodging on first hit or being pecked to death. The occy will assist on staying on hook with pickers around and big baits to target those Dhuies and avoid breakseas etc. The big hooks for the big baits and dhus have Big mouths, so no need to worry about the old wise tale about smaller hooks bigger fish (BS as far as dhuies are concerned). Snapper don't have issues with these baits either or hook sizes. 24-32oz sinker to allow her to hit bottom and not drag too far away from boat. If you're going to use jigs, I hate people using them on double drops. As i think they're less effective....you need to action them right. Jig hard up for 5-15m, then drop (depending on jig type) This is to imitate a fleeing squid...attaching it to a dropper, just fluffs around down there like a piece of weed and if you're lucky you might get some interest. To open your options though, put a a 4-5/0 hook as your second snelled lower hook. As with a strip of occy leg, the baldy's/breaksea etc follow the bait and try eating a drifting occy leg or squid from bottom and are able to get their smaller mouths over the bottom smaller hook. You'd be amazed how effective this is. I actually outfish people targetting baldies with smaller squid baits with smaller hooks. I usually use octopus style hooks myself on both as never trust hook ups on circles. My uncle who i have learned from over the years though, uses lower hook an octopus and the upper a circle. (9/0 5/0 combo). This is purely my opinion, but do as you wish and good luck either way. Alternatively, just pay me a few $ and i'll take ya out after dec 15th

Yer out of Hillary's. No Dhu's and just a hand full of Pinks for the day. Skipper and deckies were about 12 years old (ok 20 maybe) Hated it. But it was because the gear was shite and the bait was worse. I should also add I didn't pay for it, it was a corperate day. |

Heavy braid so that if (when) you tangle with someone else your line will cut through theirs. |

Need heavier than 30lb, id go minimum 50lb braid, give the mono the flick. Fresh bait will stand out like dogs balls Id snell two hooks on top of the paternoster and a single smaller hook on the bottom. Good point Kiwi. |

I'm getting bloody anxious after reading through this. I just bought a spare spool for the big girl, finnor 9500 and that will be loaded with 50lb braid. I purchased this before reading latest comments so I am happy with what I have read. Kiwi, do you think 50lb will "cut it"? Thanks Spence for sharing some very knowledgeable information, the jigs are designed to be worked and as I am only paying for 1 spot on the boat I will stick to baits, then jigging if I bag out before 10am. Haha. And I will hit up next time I am back for a trip out, I have never asked any one as i dont know "the ropes" but if you have the patience I am keen. I think besides fuel and bait I will be helping with washdown? Till then I hope to be posting pics if the weather does not stop the boat. |

Yeh mate……i have gear I lend out anyways. Just follow the tips, you'll get onto your dhuey no probs. Took a mate out the other month, managed to get him a nice little 6kg dhuey, he was stoked. Also did well on the break sea etc. Good luck out there mate. |

50 lb is plenty. Not much is not going to be stopped by that. You'll be fine with your own gear. |

Man, some horror charter stories here! Adam, definitely take your own gear, and I'd use braid, less resistance in the water so you can fish with a lighter sinker and you'll feel bites better, more so the deeper you fish . If you are accustomed to them, I'd use circles rather than J hooks - a personal preference. |
