Name: Alex Chang Committee: Global Economics Subject: Economic Sanctions Proposed by: Taiwan The General Assembly, 1) Cognizant of the effectiveness of economic sanctions in foreign diplomacy, 2) Bearing in mind that the excessive employment of economic sanctions may 3) bring a nations to its knees, 4) Aware of the fact that some nations, particularly those with advanced 5) economies, have the potential to abuse economic sanctions and use them as 6) leverage to influence the policies of other nations or to otherwise maintain 7) hegemony, 8) Recognizing that developing nations are often unable to deter the impacts of 9) economic sanctions due to their lack of economic infrastructure and stability. 10) Noting that the use of economic sanctions primarily results in the suffering of 11) civilian populations in the hopes of influencing the governing body, 12) Noting further that the use of sanctions often fail to undermine regimes, since 13) the state of deprivations caused by economic sanctions may further 14) consolidate a regime’s control over the civilian population, 15) Taking into consideration that sanctions often create political and economic 16) tension between nations, a situation which is counterproductive to diplomacy, 17) 1. Calls for the discontinuation or reduction in sanctions against regimes (such 18) as that of Cuba) in an effort to facilitate better political relations; 19) 2. Urges the UN to enact tighter regulations on the use of economic sanctions; 20) 3. Authorizes the creation of a UN subcommittee to analyze the potential 21) consequences of future sanctions and to conceive of measures to create 22) measures that prevent the implementation of ineffective or detrimental 23) sanctions; 24) 4. Trusts that developed nations may take responsibility for the economic 25) damage wrought by excessive sanctions and provide compensation or aid; 26) 5. Further recommends the enactment of sanction protection measures to 27) protect certain developing countries from excessive economic sanctions. BTW, the formatting is screwed up here.
