[Having arrived home Lucie runs a bath, whilst she gets a drink and some crackers.]

Lucie: [finishing up her drink] Ow! [clutching her stomach] Excuse me baby, you’re hurting mommy, go back to sleep please!

[Lucie cleans up her things and struggles to get into the bath, where she relaxes for a few minutes.]

Lucie: [clutching her stomach] I’m serious baby, please, you can really hurt when you’re dancing about in there.

[Once she‘s finished in the bath, Lucie gets into her pyjamas and climbs into bed, falling asleep almost instantly.]

Doug: [unlocking the door and walking inside] Lucie, I’m home! [walking through the apartment] Lucie? [opening the bedroom door and smiling] Aww, in bed already? [walking over and kissing her lightly on the forehead] I love you.

[Doug decides to get ready for bed, watches a bit of TV whilst having a snack and then climbs into bed beside Lucie.]

Lucie: [from another room] Doug? Doug where are you?

Doug: Lucie? [looking around in search of a door] Lucie, where are you? I can’t find the door.

Lucie: I’m in here.

Doug: Where? I can’t find you? [he continues to look around, panicking as Lucie‘s tone grows worried]

Lucie: Doug, help me! [sobbing]

Doug: I don’t know where you are, tell me where you are and I’ll be right there.

Lucie: The baby, Doug, the baby. [crying] I’m in here.

Doug: Where? I can’t find you Lucie, there’s no doors.

Lucie: DOOOUUUGGG! [squealing]

[Doug wakes up panting heavily in bed, he rolls over to find Lucie kneeling on the floor clinging to her side of the bed sheets.]

Doug: Lucie? [staring at her, confused]

Lucie: Doug. [crying]

Doug: What, what…the…the baby?

Lucie: [nodding into the bed sheets as she tightens her grip, in the midst of a contraction] Eeeeeeeeee.

Doug: [jumping across the bed and taking her hand] The baby’s coming?

Lucie: [breathing heavily, sobbing] Yes, Doug it hurts, it hurts so much.

Doug: How long has this been going on? [climbing off the bed and kneeling beside her]

Lucie: I don’t know, I don’t know. What time is it?

Doug: It’s err, [glancing at the clock] nine-thirty.

Lucie: Oh. Since about 6, I guess. I thought the baby was just kicking. [crying] I just thought it was kicking, I didn’t know.

Doug: Shh, shh. [wrapping an arm around her head and kissing her] It’s okay, you’re okay. [grinning] You weren’t to know, our baby is going to be here soon, just relax. I’ll get a phone and call an ambulance.

Lucie: No. [shaking her head, crying] I don’t want to go to hospital, I want to stay here. [closing her eyes tightly and squeezing Doug‘s hand and the bed sheets tightly] Just me… [panting] and you.

Doug: [nodding] Okay. Are you okay?

Lucie: Aside from trying to push a baby through a tiny hole, yes. [trying to smile at him]

Doug: [holding her hand between both hands] Right, I need you to lie down for me Lucie, I need to check…down there.

Lucie: [letting Doug help her to lie backwards against a pillow he puts down] Is it okay?

Doug: Oh my God. [staring]

Lucie: What? What’s wrong? [panicking] You can’t say oh my God and leave it at that, I’m having a baby here.

Doug: Oh, sorry. [unable to take his eyes away] I see a head Lucie, I see a tiny little fluffy head.

Lucie: You do? [trying to look down, sniffling]

Doug: I don’t think there’d be time even if we wanted to go to the hospital. [helping her back up to her kneeling position, then standing up] I just need to go and get some water and cloths and phone the doctor. We need someone to come over even if they aren’t here in time for the birth.

Lucie: Kacie. [sniffling]

Doug: [stopping in the doorway] I’ll call her when we’re done, okay?

Lucie: [nodding]

[Doug comes back a few minutes later to Lucie squealing and clutching the bed sheets through another contraction.]

Lucie: Doug, I want your hand. [reaching out and grabbing his leg]

Doug: Ahh! Ow, careful, careful. [smiling and pulling her hand into his before kneeling on the floor]

Lucie: I think I want to push.

Doug: [worried] Are you sure that’s a good idea?

Lucie: [nodding] Please, I’m ready, I’m ready to get this baby out. [breathing heavily as another contraction comes on]

Doug: Okay, okay, I’m ready. [then positioning himself correctly] Push away Lucie.

Lucie: Eeeeeeee! [pushing]

Doug: Come on, keep going, as long as you can. [wrapping his hands gently around the tiny head of their baby]

Lucie: Ahhh! [flipping her head backwards, tiredly] I can’t do this, I’m so tired, Doug…Doug?

Doug: It’s okay, just one more push Lucie and it’ll be out. I have his, or her head. Just one more big push and our baby will be here.

Lucie: [leaning forward trying to look, sobbing]

Doug: Shh, sit back Lucie, it’s okay, he or she is okay. [resting one hand on her hand] Now when you’re ready, push.

Lucie: [breathing heavily] Eeeeee [panting] eeeeeeeeeeee!

Doug: [grinning as the baby slides into his hands] Oh my, oh my, oh my…Lucie? [staring at the baby]

Lucie: Is it here? Is it a girl? Is it a boy? [trying to look around] What’s going on?

Doug: [cutting the cord and cleaning the baby up a bit] It’s a baby… [sobbing] boy, we’ve got a boy. [lifting him up carefully into Lucie‘s arms, then moving round to sit beside her]

Lucie: Baby boy? [panting, breathing heavily] We have a boy? [crying]

Doug: We do. [sniffling and taking his eyes off his son long enough to face Lucie]

Lucie: [staring back at Doug]

Doug: You have, you’ve made me the happiest man in the whole wide world. [leaning in to kiss her]

Lucie: [pulling away and resting her head back against his chest] I love you. [to the room in general]

Doug: I love you too, both of you. And I think he loves us too. [touching his tiny cheek as he lays wriggling in Lucie‘s arms]

[Five minutes later and the doctor arrives, who finishes things up. They help Lucie into bed and check them both over. As they are fine the doctor helps them to get the baby settled in a crib beside Lucie‘s bed and leaves them to it.]

Doug: [sitting on the bed beside Lucie, who is staring at their son] Lucie?

Lucie: Mmm?

Doug: He’s beautiful, well done.

Lucie: [turning and smiling at him, taking his hand and squeezing it] What time is it?

Doug: Ten-thirty.

Lucie: Is that it? [laughing]

Doug: The doctor said you had a fast labour.

Lucie: Looks like it. [smiling]

Doug: Are you okay?

Lucie: [laughing] Five hours ago I was sat on Cam and Kacie’s sofa hysterical, panicking about the whole thing, scaring Cam half to death.

Doug: What? [shocked that he didn‘t know]

Lucie: It’s okay. [squeezing his hand] I thought I wasn’t ready for this, that it was too soon. But [starting to cry] now that he’s here I couldn’t be happier.

Doug: You did brilliant, you know that? [kissing her again]

Lucie: So did you, bringing him into the world. [grinning] You were the first person he saw and that’s the way it should be.

Doug: [resting his face against her cheek] I love you Lucie, I really do.

Lucie: [smiling] Oh, I forgot to tell you that Cam said he’d be in…that place, your usual if you want to go meet him.

Doug: What? I’m not going to leave you when you’ve just given birth. [laughing] Besides, the doctor said someone should be with you for the next few days to make sure you’re okay.

Lucie: If you’re sure?

Doug: I just want to be daddy tonight, nothing else. [pulling her gently so she‘s resting against his chest]

Lucie: We have to give him a name.

Doug: That we do.

Lucie: I guess we can’t call him Tabitha now that he’s not a she.

Doug: Dang it, I was hoping it wouldn’t matter. [chuckling]

Lucie: Does he look like a Caleb?

Doug: I think he does.

Lucie: I think so too.

Doug: [lifting the baby into his arms] I think he looks like a Lucie too.

Lucie: What? [laughing, confused] Don’t make jokes, I’m too tired and confused.

Doug: [looking from the baby to Lucie] He has your face, each and every little nook and cranny. I’d know it anywhere.

Lucie: You think?

Doug: I do, I really do.

Lucie: [smiling down as Caleb opens his eyes] He’s got your eyes though, I’ve looked into them enough times.

Doug: He’s all us.

Lucie: That he is. [nearly falling asleep] Oh, I think it’s bed time.

Doug: Oh, of course. [placing the baby back into the crib and helping Lucie to lie down]

Lucie: [sleepily] Are you coming to bed now?

Doug: I’m going to get a drink and call my dad, but I’ll sit here until you’re sleeping. I love to watch…

Lucie: Okay. [yawning and resting her head on the pillow, falling asleep instantly]

Doug: …my family. [staring from Lucie to the baby and back again]

[CK SHOPPING, LUCIE FREAKING OUT]

[The next morning, Doug decides to call Kacie and Cam's house.]

Doug: [sighing as he waits for someone to pick up]
Cam: [rolling over and grabbing the phone, sleepily muttering into it] hullo?
Doug: CAM! Mate, hiii! [very cheerily]
Cam: Doug, mate, it's like...9am what do you want?
Doug: Oh sorry, didn't realise you'd still be asleep. What are you and Kacie up to right now?
Cam: well [waking up a little more] we were sleeping, but we're both up, why?
Doug: I really need your help with something, both of you. Do wanna come over in like an hour?
Cam: And why would we want to do that? [pausing] oh yeah and dude, how cryptic was that message last night [laughing gently, still waking up] Is lucie ok?
Doug: Which message was that? And you'll come over because I know Lucie had the last of your ice cream and Kacie will kill you when she realises, but we have plenty spare. [grinning] Lucie's alright, thanks mate, for everything you did yesterday! She told me all about it, you did me a real favour and I appreciate it, you're a great mate.
Cam: she promised to keep schtum over the ice-cream [laughing]
Kacie: [beside Cam] Huh? [confused]
Cam: nothing babe [smiling] Umm, i meant the message you left on my cell, saying you couldnt make it last night, something about being busy with your babe, you never called Lucie babe that i recall, or were you doing that thing and talking to him or her again? either way, yeah sure we'll be there
Doug: [laughing] I don't even remember leaving you that message, I went to bed quite early, I was warn out. Make sure BOTH of you do come, or I won't get a balanced view. See you in an hour then?
Cam: yeah we'll be there mate. Want anything?
Doug: Hmm, actually could you bring over a bottle of champagne? I can't get out and I said I'd get some for dad.
Cam: your dads due back? I didn't know. Sure thing. See you in a while
Doug: Yeah, he's coming home tonight. See you soon.
Cam: see'ya [putting phone down, turning to Kace] Morning mommy to be, how are all this morning?
Kacie: [frowning] Grumpy, why do people want to call us this early?
Cam: [smiling] We are usually up by now I guess. Doug has something he wants us to help him with, so I said we'll go round, hope that ok?
Kacie: I guess it's fine. It'll be nice to see Lucie anyway, she's due soon, isn't she?!
Cam: [nodding] today actually. She was a little jittery yesterday you know, attack of the nerves i think
Kacie: Aww, poor thing. I'm getting annoyed being seven months and I'll probably have them early. She'd had to be pregnant for nine whole months and people hardly ever have their babies on their due date, I hope she's not one of those people who has to wait two extra weeks. I'd die if I was her. [hugging him] We're so lucky!
Cam: you count yourself lucky? [staring at her] you've had twice the work, so it's like twice as hard. She'll have her baby in her arms soon enough i guess
Kacie: Yeah. [grinning] Anyway, shall we get ready?
Cam: lets just lie a while longer, it's nice to have the peace and quiet for a bit, we have about 2o minutes before we need to get up
Kacie: Okay, good. [resting against his chest]
Cam: can you hear that? [pausing]
Kacie: [shaking her head] What am I hearing?
Cam: listen
Kacie: [frowning] I can hear your heart beating...
Cam: and what else? [grinning]
Kacie: You asking me what else? [laughing]
Cam: [laughing] but theres nothing else, thats the point. Just the sound of the waves on the bay, and the odd bird, but nothing else. Can you imagine a few weeks time [grinning]
Kacie: OH! That kind of hearing. [smiling] We're going to wish we never wanted children. [giggling]
Cam: how can you say such a thing? [laughing] In a way, I want them here now, little Cam and LIttle Kacie, running around the bed, arguing over who watches TV first, who gets to hug mom and who to hug dad [smiling] our own little chaos
Kacie: You know I'm only joking...it's going to be perfect, a little chaotic as you said, but perfect.
Cam: I kind if WANT the chaos. After all, it wouldnt be nirmal otherwise. [turning to Kace] what do you fancy for breakfast?
Kacie: [smiling] I'll remind you of that when you've had two hours sleep for a month and your clothes are covered in spit up. [pausing] Do we have any bread left? I feel like toast.
Cam: It doesnt bother me anymore, Phoenix taught me not to care [smiling] and sure, one or two toast?
Kacie: Just one please!
Cam: okies [kissing her head] look after Mommy [placing a hand on her tum]
Kacie: [laughing] Did you feel that? They answered you.
Cam: which one was that, do you know? [smiling in amazement]
Kacie: Which baby? [laughing] I have no idea! [holding her stomach] Now they're telling you to get mommy's toast before she gets mad. [grinning]
Cam: aye aye [saluting] im onto it [walking out of the room]
Kacie: [getting out of the car] I really need to give up getting up from sitting, it's way too stressful.
Cam: it's their way of telling you theyre cramped up. Thats all [helping her out and then shutting the door] I wonder what was so important anyway. I hope it isnt to do with those bears we bought yesterday, and asking which colour or something
Kacie: [smiling] Yeah...and you're probably right. I'm sorry to keep moaning. [reaching for his hand]
Cam: It's fine, don't worry, whilst your carrying my children you can moan as much as you like, just dont even think about it afterwards [grinning] Im only kidding [tweaking her nose and taking her car] Come on chick
Kacie: [grinning and following him as best as she can] My...chicken...protector. [grinning]
Cam: [laughing and tipping his head back] Love you [pulling her in, slowly] all of you [going to ring the bell]

[the door opens]

Doug: [sort of squealing but whispering at the same time] Cam, Kacie, finally!
Cam: [laughing] you alright mate? sorry we're a bit late, someone couldnt quite waddle fast enough, and then when she did, she needed the loo [rolling his eyes] still not long now hey!
Doug: [grinning] Come on in, it's alright! Can't rush a pregnant woman as I well know.
Cam: cheers [stepping inside after Kacie]
Kacie: [looking around the room] Lucie not around?
Doug: She's lying down...but come on through to the bedroom, she won't mind. [walking towards the bedroom door]
Cam: I don't want to wake her, I know what those hormones do to a woken up woman
Doug: [laughing, whispering] I know what you mean, but it's fine, really, she's awake just lay in bed.
Cam: sure thing [holding Kacies hand] you ok?
Kacie: [nodding] Just don't have anything to say right now. [smiling] We going to go in then?
Doug: Oh sure. [opening the door and waiting until they're all in the room] So, that thing I needed help with, who do you think he looks like most, me or lucie?
Cam: [gripping Kacie as he feels her falter] Oh my god! [staring from Caleb, to Lucie and then to Doug] umm...when? [smiling]
Kacie: [squealing] AHHH! [then silencing herself] Sorry. [moving closer]
Doug: Last night!
Lucie: Meet Caleb Douglas Walker. [grinning]
Cam: you named him Meat???
Doug: [laughing] Of course, my baby Meat.
Kacie: Cam! [scoffing and sitting down carefully on the bed, leaning towards the baby]
Cam: ha! [pointing to Caleb and slapping Doug on the back] a boy!!! I told ya' didn't I, congrats mate. [moving closer] Well done Luce [smiling] he's gorgeous [grinning]
Lucie: Thanks. [grinning]
Kacie: Can I...hold?
Lucie: Sure! [lifting the baby carefully into Kacie's arms] Meet your Auntie Kacie little Caleb.
Cam: and i'm your Unckie Cameron [nodding and grinning] he's so little as well. Is he ok?
Doug: We called the doctor out and he's perfect, no problems at all.
Kacie: How was the labour? [staring at Caleb]
Lucie: [laughing] Short and sweet.
Kacie: I bet I'm going to get a four day labour now, to make up for it, you always were lucky!
Lucie: [smiling] It still hurt like hell, but I am lucky, lucky to have this little guy. [pressing a finger between his tiny hand] And to have this big guy! [grinning at Doug and reaching a hand out, which he squeezes]
Cam: [looking confused] wait [pause] you called the doctor out? you mean... you had him here?
Doug: [laughing] It wasn't planned if that's what you're wondering.
Lucie: When I was in the middle I didn't want to go, but as it turned out it was too late anyway.
Cam: [nodding slowly] so you... [motioning to doug] you know... [lost for words]
Doug: [grinning] I had to deliver him.
Cam: [nodding slowly] wow... thats brave man. Congratulations...
Doug: Cheers. [smiling]
Kacie: I can't believe you did it all naturally, here, at home. [staring at Lucie]
Lucie: I can't either. [laughing] But it was perfect Kace, just me and Doug and our baby. [tearily]
Kacie: [getting teary too] That is so sweet.
Cam: oh God now youve got her started. [leaning over to touch Caleb gently] and don't you go giving your Auntie Kacie any idea's mister. Tell her she has to go to the hospital to have your cousins, because your Unckie Cameron isn't quite as brave as your daddy, no he's not [resting a hand on Kacie's shoulder] isn't he sweet [smiling]
Kacie: He's beautiful... [remembering] He looks like both of you, just a perfect mix. [wiping her tears]
Cam: [looking between both new parents] Poor sod...he has Dougs nose [shaking his head] still, if we set up a fund now, he can have it repaired by the age of 18, we'll have raised enough by then
Doug: Hey, you! [hitting him playfully]
Kacie: [hitting his arm] Oi, don't be so cheeky!
Lucie: Excuse me but that's my son you're talking about.
Cam: and i'm messing, he's every bit as perfect as I knew he would be [smiling and trying to pull his finger out of Caleb's clenched fist] what else would he look like??? he's a perfect mix of the pair of you [nodding]
Doug: At least he doesn't look like his uncle...your poor babies. [grinning]
Cam: at least I have a few more nights of sleep [grinning sarcastically]
Doug: Oh, don't remind me! [rolling his eyes]
Lucie: You'll love every minute of it, I'm sure.
Cam: At least you only have the one to keep you up [stoking his head softly] He is so handsome though, you both are very lucky. I just cant wait till ours arrive now [pulling his hand back quickly as Caleb begins to moan quietly]
Kacie: [jiggling him gently] They can all play together and grow up together, it's going to be so cute.
Cam: [nodding] would you umm... like us to leave you two to it?
Lucie: If you don't mind, I'm still pretty tired from last night. [smiling]
Doug: [yawning] Me too.
Kacie: I don't wanna give him back. [pouting jokily]
Cam: Well then, lets take Caleb with us, and then let Lucie and Doug have the twins [knowing her answer already]
Kacie: [pouting even harder] Fine. [gently laying Caleb into Lucie's hands] I'll see you later Luce and congratulations. [kissing her cheeks, then Caleb's head] Bye bye baby cutie.
Lucie: Thanks Kacie. [resting an arm around her shoulder]
Kacie: Bye. [waddling towards the door]
Doug: I'll walk you out.
Cam: well done once again [leaning in to give lucie a quick kiss on the cheek] you done good! as they say [smiling] get some rest [walking towards the door] wait [stopping and turning] does this mean i cant call you Ducky no more?
Lucie: [laughing] A duck without water can still be a duck. [shrugging] But probably not.
Doug: [blowing a kiss to Lucie as he disappears out of the room] So mate, we should probably go for a drink this week...wet the baby's head.
Cam: [nodding and taking dougs hand] yeah sounds good mate. so go on, what DOES it feel like to be a dad? [smiling]
Doug: [sighing] I have no idea mate, this feels so weird to me. I mean it feels so right holding him in my arms, but I look at him and wonder what the hell I've let myself in for.
Cam: you'll be great, you know that [slapping him on the back] i'll be in touch about that drink yeah! make sure you look after them both, we'll see ourselves out, get back to your family [smiling]
Doug: [nodding] Yeah, I hope so. See you mate. [slapping him on the back too] Bye Kacie. [kissing her cheek]
Kacie: Bye...daddy! [smiling]
Cam: oi! wheres mine, i'm a daddy too! [pointing to his lips]
Kacie: You're daddy-to-be! [kissing his lips]
Cam: [pointing again] umm... to two!
Kacie: Okay, daddy to be times two. [rolling her eyes and kissing him again]
Doug: Bye guys. [laughing and closing the door behind them]
