I wasn't sure where to put this in the pre-existing posts so I made one to stand apart. There's been some discussion on what would be the best for the magic levels. High magic would mean that items would be more readily available and that the people of this world would use magic with an ease and casualness that reflected the availability. By contrast, a low magic world would mean that the ability to use magic, the ease of acquiring components and even the way magic users are looked upon would be vastly different. Then there is the medium path...one that seems to be most popular to those I have spoken with. So...what is everyone's opinion on this? |

I'd like a happy middle. I'd not want every household to have a magic dishwasher. But then again I'd not want the magical community to be 1 out of every 1000 folks to have the talent. But *IF* someone were gifted and had the means, they could attend a collage for magical study. Or maybe a master/ apprentice thing? Just by couple of copper thrown in |

I also support something in the middle. I'd like magic to be common enough that it doesn't freak people out but not so common that it's a part of everyday life for most people. As for how it is learned I imagine it would be like a lot of things were at the time period and place this game is loosely based on (Europe about 900-1100 AD): you found someone who already knew the things you wanted to learn and became their student. This is also better suited for a smaller number of players as we're likely to have at first.

I always liked a setting that Mages are actually a sort of status statement. Sure, magic shouldn't freak everyone out, but those magic casters who can cast spells any higher than, say, 3rd level should be few and far between. Edit: In other words, its common for people to dabble in magic. Not so common for people to actually commit to the profession. Edited by IratusAngelus, May 17 2014, 06:12 PM.

Agreed with that. These poor folks need all the help they can get. And is a post-collapse world, people will dabble in all sorts of things, but few will see it through to a higher standard once they got something out of it that will make their lives a little easier. |
