![]() This is Splodge. She was born in this house 14 years and 23 days ago on May 4th 1996 - our wedding day! We used to have 3 cats - Smokey (a silver tabby male) and Treacle (a tortoiseshell female) were rescue cats from Cat Protection (a charity here in the UK that rehouses abandoned cats). We got them in February 1996, 2 months after moving in here together. Well, they were both supposed to have been neutered, but hey ho, Treacle produced a surprise litter of kittens for us the day we got married! We kept Splodge from the litter, and then had both her and her mother neutered. So no more accidents! Treacle died first, 4 years ago, from Cancer. We had her put to sleep to save her the pain. She was 12. Then Smokey died in his sleep a year or so after that, at the age of 17. And now, yesterday, we lost Splodge as well. Earlier this year, she had a bad paw, and the vet found a tiny tumour on the knuckle of one toe, so she amputated the toe. As you can see, Splodge was not impressed with having the bandage on, and constantly hit us with it like a boxing glove, until it was removed. That was the beginning of March. She made a wonderful recovery after that and became so frisky and loving like a little kitten again. Just Tuesday of this week, while sitting on my lap, she suddenly stretched herself upwards until she had one paw on each of my shoulders, and proceeded to lick my face like a dog. She was so affectionate! But I suddenly noticed a swelling on her back - I would say it was on her back right leg hip, if that makes sense. I hadn't noticed it before, but I had been keeping a keen eye on her, knowing there was a risk that she would develop further tumours after the toe incident. So I took her to the vet yesterday morning. My fears were right, and the vet also found another tumour in her abdomen. It had come on too quickly and the tumours were too large for any kind of treatment, so the only option was to have her put to sleep. So I held her in my arms as they injected her, just as I did her mother 4 years ago. And now, for the first time in over 14 years, I have no cats. It is so sad. I adore cats, as I know many of you do. I hope you don't mind me sharing this with you. I have so many wonderful memories of Splodge, Treacle and Smokey. But the house seems so empty now without them. Rest In Peace, Splodge - 4th May 1996 - 26th May 2010 Edit: Here's another photo of Splodge and me in March this year, after the larger bandage had been removed.

my condolences. I nearly lost my male kitty last year to a kidney failure. I have been feeding him differently and so far we have avoided further trouble, but he was almost a goner. Scared me to think of life without him. Your Splodge looks a bit like a cat I had called Phoebe who was hit by a car a few years back. Pretty kitty. |

Pets are family. I am owned and regularly herded by a rescued border collie mix of, shall we say, mature years. I know that border collies tend to be long-lived, but I worry about his arthritis, deafness, etc. Still, as long as he can still bark at squirrels, I will not despair. Please know that you have all of our good wishes. There are a lot of animal lovers at this forum. |

Aw, puddums, sorry to hear that. I buried my 18 year old last summer, and currently have a 16 year old for whom I worry. They are so dear. My two 1 year old babies give me such joy. |

so very sorry to hear of your loss. but what wonderful memories you must have. have you ever been here? http://rainbowsbridge.com/ and a very special place it is too, for unconditional love abounds there. pattie annePS: here are TWO of their poems: ****************************************** Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together... ~ Author Unknown ~ ****************************************** Rescue Rainbow Bridge Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at the Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward the Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached the Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before the Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to the Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at the Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him. "You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across the Bridge." The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching the Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. "Watch, and see," said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards the Bridge. They all crossed the Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across Rainbow Bridge." "I think I like rescuers," said the first animal. "So does God," was the reply. ~ Author: ~ Benny Archuleta of Jacksonville, Florida The Dachshund Rescue Web Page |

I must be having a bad week. Monday I lost a duckling, Wednesday I lost my cat, and today I crashed my car! And no, I didn't hurt myself or anyone else, I just somehow wedged it inro a metal palisade fence, badly damaging 2 doors and a wing mirror. Don't ask! I got flustered. Like I said, bad week. |

I'm with JayBee...things come in threes. Looks like you just got yours for the entire year at once. Sorry about the pusscat...I know they are really little people in fur coats. Felt strange to be without a cat for almost a year until Nicholas found me. |
