Dear All - A special thanks to you both, very much, for your good thoughts and prayers, ladies. First Eric Update: One thing, we know very well, one of the people who will most likely be caring for Eric once he hits stateside, is our son Chris who works at The Wounded Warrior's clinic, at BAMC, in San Antonio, Tx. (The Wookie man!) Life is so odd. Our son Ken (Eric's father-in-law) was in army intelligence 20 years from before the end of the cold war (1976) to Operation Iraqi Freedom and never got a scratch. Our combat medic son Chris has been in thearmy 26 years, over-seas twice (Germany-Korea), and his only "war (games) wound" was when he injured his neck draging an air force pilot from a crashed and burning plane in a joint services training mission in the states. This was grand-son's Eric FIRST deployment. Life can change in a heart-beat. Eric went though his surgery just fine. Doctors think they got all the shrapnel out of his face and chest. He woke up in the hospital and knew everyone he was supposed to know. And apparently his vision has been unaffected. He and a buddy were on duty in motor pool when they took an in-coming mortar. Our son (Ken) was 20 minutes away from Whitney and Eric's house when he got his first call from Whitney that Eric had been wounded. We knew Ken and Sonia were planning on going to see Whitney and the kids soon, (Eric's home base is about six hours away from all of us) but just didn't realize Ken was on the road when he first called us. Ken is a junior high school principal and he is off for the summer, having declined summer school this year, so our kids were able to be with their daughter and grandchildren without having to take any time off work. Even when God seems so very far away, one quickly realizes that He is always in control. The young man who was with Eric was KIA. Our hearts and prayers go out to that family. Once again my heart felt thanks to all, especially to donnarose and bonnie, WHO have already responded here personally, for their excellent caring and kind words. I know there will be many others responding, as TIME journey's ever onward. And for all of you, I am very grateful. pattie anne

OMG Pattie Annie! Sorry to hear of his injury but so far so good that he's on the road to recovery. Yes, it's always a rough time to hear that phone ring when a loved one is in the service...you just never know. Best wishes to a speedy recovery and they send him directly home to his family asap. |

dear all - our son (Ken) is keeping us up to date by phone every day. he and his wife (Sonia) are still with their daughter - our granddaughter (Whitney) and the grand kids in KY. Second Eric Update: seems our grandson's hearing has been affected. (not unusual when a mortar goes off so close to someone.) not too sure about the extent of the damage to his eyes yet. Eric is at present at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LARMC), in Germany. (it is the largest american hospital outside the united states.) he will be kept there until the decision is reached on whether he goes back to his unit or is shipped home. thanks again, to everyone for their support. it means so very much to all of us. our thoughts and prayers are still with the soldier who was in the same motor pool with Eric, who was killed, when they were attacked. we have been in contact wih our combat medic son (Chris). and he is sure, if Eric does come home, Eric will be sent to him and his wounded warrior clinic in san antonio, tx. it is just a matter of TIME. our other grand-son (Alex) is stationed at Ramstein Air Base, an air force base in germany, so it is very possible that he will be allowed to see his brother-in-law, before Eric is moved again. it is amazing at the comfort in just knowing someone in the family is so close to Eric now (Alex), and will be in the future (Chris), before Eric is finally back at home with his family. pattie anne

A family friend spent time there as a nurse - she always says that it is the best of the best of medical care, both physically and emotionally. Glad to know that he is in good hands. |

Third Eric Update: Eric was supposed to have ear surgery yesterday. Have not heard back on it, yet. Pretty sure he will be mustered out. He was in intensive care the entire time he was in Landstuhl, Germany. He is at present at Walter Reed, in Washington DC. Wife (Whitney) and three month old son (Wyatt) near-by. Eric has had a TOTAL of 12 surgeries so far. Docs said if he had been hit head on by all that shrapnel instead of being hit from the side, he would have most likely been killed. Prayers and good thoughts so very much appreciated from all. ![]() pattie anne
