700 new planets have just been discovered by Nasa!!! They say 140 of them are Earth-like! Surely now there must be intelligent life(like humans, only aliens) elsewhere in the universe. Who knows? Maybe there's a Gallifrey, or Skaro out there somewhere. This news has got me tremendously excited!!! I hope we make first contact with an intelligent alien species in our life-time. You never know?

Can't you see how they roar their light?Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes." Vincent Van Gogh actor Tony Curran 'Vincent and the Doctor' (2010) | |

Let's hope we have the best of humanity to show them if that ever happens. I wonder just how far away the closest one is ? |

great news! but i don't think i REALLY believe in ET and his buddies.i believe mankind is unique and alone in the cosmos. with 'moore' and 'moore' physicists and astronomers weighing in on that notion too. then too the Bible says that, one day the heaven and the earth will burn and disolve, and the elements will melt, and the stars will fall, and God will start all over again. so if ET and his brothers were indeed "out there" they would all crash and burn when God ends this present and flawed creation, and goes onto complete His 'moore' perfect second draft. but aliens do make for fun and EnTertaining fiction; of THAT FACT their is no doubt. pattie annedear marsh child - went to the JPL NASA website to answer GU's question about how far away the closest earth like exo-planet was to us and they said: CURRENT PLANET COUNT: 453 stars with planet(s): 385 earth-type planets: 0 what website were you visiting that had the 700 exo-planets count with 140 earth like ones? pattie anne

Dear Pattie Anne: I didn't get my information from a website, but from T.V. (the channel being Canadian channel: CTV) Their wrong, not mine. I'm only just quoting what that channel said. Anyhow, I like to believe in aliens. I'm optimistic they are out there, but not in the usual movie-like form we are all accustomed to. On the bible front, I have lost all faith in it. My mind is gravitating towards Richard Dawkins these days. Though some days, I'm uncertain of what to believe in. I know this isn't really the place to talk about the bible, but I CAN'T accept that suicides and homosexuality are a sin. Two years ago I was close to suicide myself because I became so God fearing and dealt with the problem of scrupulosity. Basically I was feeling that if I do this I'll go to hell, if I do that I'll go to hell, but I've kicked that now. It took two full years to get the bible and Jesus out of my head, as I was going to commit suicide over it. I'm a very happy person now that I've run away from God. But I do respect anyone else's beliefs in Jesus Christ and the Bible. If it helps to bring happiness and meaning in your life, then I say go for it. Me, personally, it was taking happiness out of my life. I recently bought and read 'The God Delusion' by Dr Richard Dawkins, and it's got me into Atheism like never before. I'm starting to believe in natural selection. Though, I have to admit that some days I'm uncertain of what to believe. So my mind is fragile now. I have to be careful what I fill it with now. |

dear marcello - did you know stephen hawking is one of the physicists that says he believes now we are alone in the universe. he doesn't know WHY exactly. it is just something he thinks is so. and i remember reading something about carl sagan saying he was beginning to doubt ET was 'out there' as they had been looking for so many years now without even a flickering of "evidence," and had been unable to reproduce "life" in the lab. and richard feynman, one of the greatest physicist of the 20th century, said once, even evolution could only happen once, as it was so very odds defying. anyWHO, do you remember the name of the TV show? may be able to find it on megaupload. and it's perfectly OK to discuss the Bible here. even if you don't see it as a particularily pertinent, for today, religious document. but i am sad to learn that reading it made you sad. many people i know have found great joy and comfort in it. as well as a new life and freedom they never knew existed. and i agree with you, totally, you should be careful what you put in your mind, as it has a way of working its way into your heart. pattie annePS: and regarding aliens. they also present another knotty problem for most christians. if ET is 'out there' ... in a body ... or just as a spirit being ... or whatever (TOM's talking cabbage for instance) they will eventually fall into SIN and need redemption. so does that mean Jesus has/had to die over and over and over again on each "intelligent" world? horrors no. the one TIME He left heaven for earth was bad enough! or the flip side of that is, we would have to take Christ to them, and convert (bring back to God) the entire UNIVERSE of beings. and we aren't doing all that well with the ONE planet (EARTH)and the ONE species (MANKIND) He gave The Great Commission to (to win for the Lord lost souls) as it is. however, our ways and our understanding are so far below what the Creator's ways and understanding are; that i know that He COULD populate the universe will all kinds of intelligent, clever creatures, if He chose to, for His purpose. but i just don't think He has done so. one thing about it. TIME will quickly tell if i am wrong, as like so many born again believers of today, we see the end in sight, and feel there is just not too much TIME left to the old order of things. "TIMES they ARE a changin'." p a |

I see you and Tom seem to have come to an agreement...God leaves him alone, he leaves God alone The first part of the Bible..the Old Testament is a history~wars, personal acts of violence etc regarding the survival of a culture against all others. It's the second part that is the real life guide...the New Testament. But until someone comes back and tells me there is a real place called Hell, Limbo, Purgatory and Heaven (no-Dante doesn't count), I'll just continue as I do. Honest, compassionate and caring about those around me, doing my work to the best of my ability, keeping a civil tongue in my head and treat others as I wish to be treated in return. I'm not going to worry myself to death about pre-destination, being one of the Elect (who told them they were??) or if I step on a crack, I'll break my mother's back. Of course everyone hopes there's some sort of continuation of 'conscience' after death but if so, considering how many many many humans have been on earth (and animals too then for they contain the spark of life as well) the ghostly population must be overcrowded! |

Dear Pattie Anne: The T.V. program was the news itself on CTV. The news anchor woman was Sandi Ronaldo. You are a great friend, Pattie Anne. You are so right about the last line in your above post. I have to admit to you I have Bi-polar disorder, Obsessive Compulsive disorder and high anxiety, and so the scrupulosity I was dealing with is very common amongst people with OCD. The words of Jesus weren't comforting me, they were terrifying me. I was so scared that I was going to go to hell for sins like greed and lust, etc. I'm a very materialistic person (i.e. my collecting of Whovian memorabilia) and it made me feel(the scrupulosity) that I was being greedy. Also I felt constant fear of going to hell over many more sins I committed in my life. I was always angry with God(when I believed) about the homosexuality issue and suicide issue. I was brought up Roman Catholic, but I tried other versions of Christianity like Pentecostal, baptist, anglican, and others, but they all terrified and angered me. I thank you, Pattie Anne, for not getting upset about me talking about the bible here on your forum. You are a class act. Thanks again, my friend.

Wouldn't it be cool if constant regeneration like the Doctor would be the after-life. I say Regeneration, not reincarnation which isn't the same thing. The thought of reincarnation scares me as much as the thought of Hell.

Gold Usher: You bring up an intriguing possiblity of the ghost population being over-crowded. I wonder if they are all around us. I like to think that(even though somedays I'm atheist and some days I don't know what to believe) that my Grandfather is watching over me and protecting me from any negativity. P.S. I guess I've been on a lot more than I thought I would in returning to this wonderful forum I call my Cyber-home. I love you all. You're great people. THANKS again for having me, P.A.

dear marcello - but hell is just the temporary holding tank. the lake of fire is what you really, really need to worry about! ![]() still, knowing you come from a catholic background does explain some of your thinking. the catholic faith does not teach their believers that you can know absolutely know, Heaven is your home when you die. but not all christianity teaches that particular notion. dear GU - limbo - no - not in Bible - added later purgatory - no - not in Bible - added later heaven - yes hell - yes ( :wink2:) -- Jesus first and last sermons lake of fire - yes predestination - no - not as most people teach it elect - no -- we choose God free will - yes BTW someone DID comeback from the dead, but by and large, He just wasn't believed even though in the three days and nights He was gone, He was both in Hell (emptying half the place) first and later in Heaven with the saints (ALL dead born again believers) and His Father. When you are GOD, you just refuse to stay dead! ![]() and one final thought to my two dear friends: would you rather be hit buy a truck or by the SHADOW of a truck? pattie anne

Dear Pattie Anne: Oh I definately know about the lake of fire. I've read the bible from start to finish. One of my favorite songs is called 'Lake of Fire' by the Meat Puppets, but the Nirvana covered version of it for their Unplugged in New York CD. |

I was raised and still am a practicing Catholic. And while I do not agree with some of the things which have been said previously on this thread about what Catholicism does and does not teach (limbo/purgatory/eternal security/etc.), one can always feel free to PM me if they have any specific questions. Take care!
