You lead your men into the forest. Just off the road you pass by a few woodcutter hovels protected by a wooden palisade. A few men are out cutting trees and eye you warily from a distance, you notice they all stay within sight of their homes.

Leaving this last trace of civilisation behind you move deeper into the woods. It is rough going, in some places tree roots stretch out to trip you and in others the ground is obstructed by dense thickets. For two days you trek southward looking out for any sign of beastmen or other foes. At night you hear many animal sounds, from the distant call of wolves to the hooting of owls and scurrying of smaller creatures in the under-bush.

Into the third day of your search you make a discovery. Your men hit upon a sunken pathway in the underbush where the ground has been beaten down by the passing of many cloven feet. Likely a trail made by beastmen. You follow it along for several miles, in places it is littered by bones and other detritus some of which seem fresh. The trail goes on through the trees and then eventually you see it is leading toward a large clearing up ahead. It is hard to make out without getting closer...

Ok, send forward two groups of 5 men to carry out a recce patrol along either flank of the clearing, however have half the remaining men stay within the limit of sight and sound of those groups. Ulfred will lead one recce group personally. The second in command (name tbc) is leading the support group of the other patrol.
Ooc: sorry its so specific, years of cadet training, definite procedures to be followed are etched in my brain :p

Ooc: no that is good. :)

As Ulfred's recee group edges closer you get a proper sight of the clearing through the trees and undergrowth. You see it is a beastmen encampment. Several gors stand guard at either side of the clearing. Several other beastmen sit round by a cold fire picking at scraps of bone. At least half the beastmen seem to be asleep, perhaps because it is daytime. There are about 50 beastmen in total a mix of gors, ungors and females. In the centre of camp they have a tall black jagged rock, evidently the herdstone.

- send a runner to the other group, explaining plan. Ulfred's group will try being stealthy and killing sentries and as many as possible without being noticed. But once they get noticed and things go loud other group charges into the rear of the beastmen reactive force. No quarter kill everything.

You put the plan into execution. Your men and the other group perform their part with distinction, managing to sneak close and rush the sentries unawares. Within moments the sentries are dead though a couple yell out as they die. But before the rest of the beastmen can figure what is going on your are charging into the camp. The stench of the camp is foul. Those nearest the edge are killed first before the rest manage to muster a resistance. The remainder fight fiercely but your men are hitting them from two sides and they are too disorganised. Having already nailed a sentry Ulfred personally cuts down one of the biggest Ungor.

The result is a one-sided slaughter. You kill twenty four beastmen in total and don't lose a single man in reply, though several have taken light wounds. The other half of the beastman herd scatters away into the trees.

Set up camp on the limit of site of the clearing, set up a first aid station to help the wounded. At the same time collect enemy heads to authenticate the kills. Have the second in command mark the herdstone on the map so they can return in case the beasts returnand report to the authorities so it can be purified.

OOC: You successfully perform all the actions. Meanwhile the wounded are not badly hurt and able to carry on.

OOC: The only action left this turn is to continue your search of the present area. In this instance you continue the search but find nothing else.

Your turn 1 actions are now complete. Turn 2 starts in 2 days time, unless you change your mind I will assume your turn2 actions to be move to and search area 5 :)

You continue heading deeper into Drakwald. You see some animal tracks but for the moment no more signs of beastmen.

You press onward travelling a couple more days. The forest here seems eerie and oppressive as though the trees themselves are unfriendly. Your guys don't like it much.

You are passing through a grove a talk gnarly oak when suddenly without warning the trees around you lash out with branches. Your men swing swords to fend them off but five are seized and dragged toward an opening that opens up in the side of a trunk... meanwhile other branches continue to writhe and lunge at anyone who gets close.

" lads there is no bounty for trees, lets back off from here and keep searching this area! ". Once clear of the area Ulfred addressed his men " I will never let men go like that lightly, however attempting a rescue would only have risked more lives, and I do not want to lose more lives than necessary. We will send their share of the gold to any family we find on our return."
