Since they are scared you men reluctantly agree with you. Meanwhile the five caught ones scream in terror as each is pulled into the opening of a trunk. As you withdraw you hear the muffled cries behind and then hear no more. Leaving the dangerous trees behind you continue the search of the area but find nothing else of significance. |

OOC: That is all I am afraid. Some encounters are longer than others. But good job on the quick replies. Edit: feel free to post your own character-related fluff inbetween events. eg. talking to your men about the adventure, eating and drinking with them. etc etc. anything you think to write about.

OOC: Bah, never mind :p didn't stand much chance without an edged weapon between the lot of them! But thanks, currently in a weird state of waiting for final uni results so free time like crazy :p ah well time to strategize, maybe get some background together, he is based on a young version of my character from the SoS campaign. Next turn will be to move to zone 11 and search, posting that now as I'm off flat hunting Edited by bsucbe, Jun 8 2013, 10:20 PM.

You press on deeper into the forest, passing several craters in the ground. Legend says the Drakwald was once showered by meteors of warpstone, a factor that explains why it contains so many monstrous creatures and perhaps explains why even certain trees have become dangerous. As you go the trees get taller and more twisted it seems. Meanwhile the underbush looks like it has been trampled in places by some huge creature. After a while you hear some type of noise in the trees up ahead. You listen intently. It sounds like something huge moving this way. You have only moments to decide how to react before it arrives. Get the men to spread out and take cover off the path and hide from sight, clearly stating any ambush will be started by my movements alone. All weapons held at the ready. |

Obeying orders your men take cover. You hear the sound of footfalls getting close. Whatever is coming is pretty damn massive. You see fear in the eyes of the man crouched beside you. And then you see it emerge from the trees. A colossal bi-pedal creature many times the height of a man. It has a huge slavering bull-like head and four musclular arms, two of which end in scythes. It wears a single loincloth and a belt and necklace which are adorned with many skulls. It's head turns this way and that it's nostrils scenting the air. Surely such creatures only exist in nightmare or legend. It appears you have encountered one of the dreaded ghorgons, a deadly creature which few men have ever faced and then live to tell the tale. Ulfred stared in awe of the beast, there were options to consider, stay and ignore the creature on confront it, the rewards would be huge though the cost would unquestionably be a hevy one. Yet how could he knowingly pass up such an opportunity. Ulfred stood tall and cried the charge. His men rose from all around the beast, they were trained and equipped as best as he could hope. " The beast is slow, move fast. Never stop. Teams of 5, run past, aim to land blows in the knees, bring it down then we move for the kill, GO MAKE YOUR NAME LEGEND !!! " |

You rush out from the trees to attack. Your men are afraid but follow. Leading the first group you rush at it's legs. The ghorgon lets out a bloodcurdling bellow as it sees you. You slash the legs as best you can as you dart past, managint to draw blood. In reply however the Ghorgon catches one of your men with a scythed hand gutting him open like a fish. It then catches another by raising it's leg and he is sent sprawling. You and the other two dart away. The beast lurches after you but as it does another wave of men strikes it from the flank hacking at its hamstrings. In reply it turns round and tears apart two more in a frenzied rage. As more waves of men rush in to attack you see the creature's legs begin to weaken but then suddenly it grabs one of your men and swallows him hole. Your men carry on attacking but suddenly you see several of the wounds on it's legs regrow and knit back together. Your men carry on battling desperately and bravely, unwilling to desert their comrades despite the danger and despite the fact they are taking losses. The air is filled with the noise of battle, the yelling of your men and the bellowing of the beast. The fight hangs in the balance and you wonder how many men you will lose to bring it down. "Keep at it lads!! One group stay back throw rocks, anything, try and get its eyes, the combination should distract it and save lives. " Meanwhile Ulfred recalled a tale from his youth and lit a rag that he wrapped around the branch, now when he struck he would follow it with fire, and see if the wounds stuck thus time. " NO SURRENDER, FOR OUR FRIENDS AND HOMES, THIS BEAST DIES" |

Given the option several men happily stay back foraging on the floor for stones to throw. Meanwhile those nearest the beast plus some of the bravest ones continue to attack up close. The stones help distract it somewhat though it continues to fight savagely. At last one of your men strikes a mighty blow across it's shin. Unable to further support it's weight on the wounded leg the beast finally topples over. Even then it manages to strike a couple of your men in it's thrashing around. Your maces are not well suited to the job of finishing it off due to it's skull being so large and thick. Eventually however one of your men manages to bludgeon it on the windpipe. The thing thrashes and spasms horribly. Warily you all stand back as it finally dies. Your men are wearied and exhausted but at least the thing is finally dead. Around you however you hear moans of the wounded. This victory has come at a price. Three men have been killed outright while nine more are badly wounded. Of the nine wounded at least four are fatal and not likely to live much longer. |

Ulfred knew this was a key moment for the men's morale. " Men we have done what few can claim. The fallen are heroes, without question. Those who can bury the dead, tend to the wounded, and for any too far gone do what you can, we make camp and rest, you have all earned it. From this moment any who fought today bears a mark on their shield while I will carry the names of the fallen on my shield, we fight with them all still, their courage and sacrafice will carry us across the years and battles to come." Ulfred smiled to himself, that should do, he drew his dagger and began the task of carving the names onto his shield. While at the same time taking a mental note, if they had some weapon variation, or even a secondary edged weapon maybe a few lives would have been saved , a thought which was useless until after this job. |

With wounded and dying to tend to you make camp. Your men seem grim-faced and weary yet in some regard also possessed with a grim sense of satisfaction at the deed accomplished. Looking at the dead monster beside you it's head alone is nearly the height of a human. Fortunately you only need to take the horns off it to get the bounty. Luckily as well two of your men have hatchets for cutting trees. Watching your men die is not nice but then as a mercenary such things are probably unavoidable. One man dies quickly. Three others continue to moan in pain and die at internals in the night, their final moans disturbing the sleep of the rest of you. Next day you complete your search of the area but find nothing else. OOC: Inspired by Grumbaki I've made each player a map:

Nice map! Really useful to visualise, think I might have a plan now :p so carrying sacks of heads and giant horns, sounds like that could lead to an interesting scent |
