Magic is, essentially, changing reality. While warriors, assassins, thieves, etc hurl through life like an arrow from a bow, a mage stops every once in a while to manipulate the threads of reality. Unfortunately, the strain of using magic is very dangerous, and harmful to the body if not carefully monitored. Different mages are able to manipulate the world in different ways - each mage can use magic from one of the following schools:

Source

Schools of Magic

Abjuration

Abjurations are protective spells. They create physical or magical barriers, negate magical or physical abilities, harm trespassers, or even banish the subject of the spell to another plane of existence. If an abjuration creates a barrier that keeps certain types of creatures at bay, that barrier cannot be used to push away those creatures. If you force the barrier against such a creature, you feel a discernible pressure against the barrier. If you continue to apply pressure, you end the spell and risk harming yourself.

Divination

Divination spells enable you to learn secrets long forgotten, to predict the future, to find hidden things, and to foil deceptive spells. Scrying: A scrying spell creates an invisible magical sensor that sends you information. Lead sheeting or magical protection blocks a scrying spell, and you sense that the spell is so blocked. Divination magic is very rare, even among mages.

Evocation

Evocation spells manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power to produce a desired end. In effect, they create something out of nothing. Many of these spells produce spectacular effects, and evocation spells can deal large amounts of damage.

Illusion

Illusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, not see things that are there, hear phantom noises, or remember things that never happened.

Necromancy

Necromancy spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving undead creatures make up a large part of this school.

Divine

Divine magic is magic based upon healing and protection. Though it's less effective and versatile in protection than Abjuration magic is, divine magic is the only school of magic that can actually heal one's wounds.

Transmutation

Transmutation spells change the properties of some creature, thing, or condition.

1) Magic is an inborn talent, and cannot be learned.
2) There are two styles of actually using magic: Sorcery and Wizardry.
-Sorcery is an innate, raw form of magic which requires little study and work, and is better suited to bursts of high-powered magical energy than long-term magic use. Sorcery is often wild and unpredictable.
-Wizardry is the style of magic characterized by long hours of study and work in order to refine one's talents. Due to the amount of time spent studying magic, Wizards are much more specialized than Sorcerors, and are usually more powerful as mages - most wizards can defeat most sorcerers in prolonged magic duels due to their superior magical power, but are more likely to have a narrower view of magic and life in general.
3) Magic has a cost - that is, using too much magic at once can knock out or kill the mage. If the mage is knocked out by magic, their maximum lifespan is shortened by up to five years, and they remain unconscious for several minutes to several days, depending on the failed spell's power. When magic is used, the power has to come from somewhere, be it a magical 'battery' item, their own life force, or another's life force.
