It's not easy being drunk all the time. If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Tyrion straightened out his clothes, took a deep breath, put on a big smile and knocked on the door to his father's chambers. He waited for a moment, until he heard an 'Enter', and then opened the door and walked in. "Father! How I've missed you. Casterly Rock just isn't the same place without you there." He swung out a chair and took a seat before his father could say anything. "You have Kevan's regards, although I'm sure you've probably already heard from him, hmm? All good news there, I hope? I personally believe I have truly been on my best behaviour." He smiled widely. "Although I could do with a small drink now, all that journeying has tired me out..." The trip had run smoothly, and they had reached King's Landing well on schedule, but Tyrion wasn't a great traveller. He wasn't a big fan of horses. |

Tywin set down his quill as Tyrion entered, and watched him take a seat, listening with an unreadable expression. He cocked his eyebrow slightly at his son's last sentence, before wordlessly reaching for a pitcher of wine and an empty goblet across the table to him. "Your lucky day, it seems. Probably healthier to drink that than the water in this city, anyway." he remarked dryly as he passed the drink to Tyrion. "My brother's ravens have been rather in your favor, though he did express some doubt in how quickly you employed new help. Still, none of the Lords have yet written to declare a rebellion, the income stands firm, and we may even have a solution to the banditry in hand at last." he shook his head to annunciate his point. "Unfortunately, the rest of the Kingdoms seem to not share in the sentiment." Edited by Tywin Lannister, Jun 16 2015, 11:13 PM.

Tyrion poured himself half a goblet of wine, and took a sip. "Ah yes, Thomys Calloway. He proved his prowess with a sword to me, so I thought I would put him to the test. He said he single-handedly took care of several bandits on the way to Casterly Rock. He could be lying, in which case I guess I won't be seeing him again. He could be telling the truth, in which case that's a problem we no longer have. Either way, we lose nothing. But anyway, the rest of the Kingdoms, what problem is it they have with me exactly?" Bitterness crept into his voice when he outed that final question. Of course, everyone hated dwarfs - his father included, most passionately - but what criticisms did they have on him now? |

"Oh, nothing regarding you personally at all. In terms of peace and stability, however, not all are so inclined." Tywin explained, reaching into the small metal chest on the table between them. He pulled out an unfurled roll of parchment, still carrying the direwolf of House Stark, pressed into a now-cracked circle of gray wax. Passing the message to Tyrion, he divulged "This ought to give you some idea of how peaceful the rest of the Realm is. Lord Edward Stark is dead, if you can imagine." he remarked grimly. |

Tyrion cursed himself for feeling so easily attacked. But the news about Eddard made him wish his father had been speaking about him after all. "Lord Eddard?" he said, shocked. "I hadn't heard. That's... terrible. Why do all the most honourable men in Westeros seem to be dying? First Ser Barristan, now Lord Eddard..." He quickly skimmed the letter to see what had killed him. He frowned. "White Walkers? Were they assisted by Grumpkins and Snarks perchance?" His father shot him a look. "I didn't mean to be disrespectful, Father. But really? They are a creature of myth and legend. Don't you think it more likely he was killed by Wildlings, or perhaps wild beasts?" |

Tywin shook his head. "I don't know. Half of the courtiers in the Red Keep know what color tunics they're wearing in Oldtown, and which Dornish nobleman is secretly having an affair, but ask any of them about what goes on North of the neck, and they all blanch. Let alone what goes on North of the Wall." he walked to the window with a thoughtful expression. "The myths and tales we tell children had to have come from somewhere. We've no idea how much land there even is North of the Wall, let alone what lives there. What we do know, now, is that something has certainly killed the Warden of the North, robbing the Kingdom of an able commander and loyal vassal. All we can do is wait, I suppose, and see if whatever "it" was comes back for more or not." |

Tyrion nodded. "The Wall was built for a reason, I suppose... let's hope it continues to keep out whatever we don't want to let in." He took another sip from the wine. The thought of the Wall and what lay beyond it had sent a shiver through his body. He wasn't one to believe myths and magic easily, but his father was right, there must be at least a grain of truth to all these tales that had been told for generations. "So... where does this leave us? Robb Stark Warden of the North, how does that sit with you, Father?" |

Tywin returned to the table, pouring himself a cup of wine as well. "There's no reason for it not to sit well with any of us. The boy is well known for having his father's values and virtues, and he'd fight to defend the North as fiercely as any other Stark." he said simply, taking a sip from his goblet. "And besides. His wife will, hopefully, be Myrcella's sister in law some day, which should in turn open the doors for a future allaince with the Starks. The most powerful and wealthy of the Kingdoms and the Throne, all bound together as family. It would have been so many years ago already, had Aerys Targaryen's mind not collapsed in on itself. Perhaps this time, the endeavor shall succeed."

Tyrion nodded. "I have not had the pleasure of meeting Robb in person, but I have indeed heard that he is his father's son." I wonder if anybody says that about me, he thought to himself, and had to do his best not to break into a smile. "Ah yes, how was little Myrcella when she left King's Landing? How did she feel about her betrothal?" He had always had a soft spot for Myrcella. It was probably the strong contrast with Joffrey that caused it. Beside that little monster Myrcella had always seemed like an angel. |

Tywin shrugged lightly. "No less frightened than any girl in her position, I'm sure, but she held herself with remarkable dignity for someone her age. Had it been a few years from now, she might even have been excited at the prospect of marrying Loras, Gods only know most girls that age would be. It may not seem like the most comfortable arrangement for her now, but she'll come to enjoy it as she grows older, I'm sure. There's hardly a better place for a girl that age than Highgarden, and few men as morally decent as her betrothed." he said simply, sipping some more from his cup. "The biggest worry we can have is that she'll be educated and care for all too well." he remarked, a hint of darkness in his tone. |

"Hmm..." Tyrion swiveled the wine around in his cup thoughtfully. "Well, at least she is in good hands. And I'm sure she will remember who her family is," he added. "Now that we happen upon the subject of family... How are they all? My lovely sister? Our young King? And how about Jaime?" He hoped he would see his brother during his short stay in King's Landing. His sister... not so much. |

Tywin straightened up, swiveling the wine in his cup as he cast his eyes at his son's seat. "Jaime is, as he always was, at his post, somewhere in the keep." he remarked with the faintest hint of bitterness, waving vaguely at the structure around them with his free hand. "I've not heard any complaints from him. Joffrey is-" the Lord of Casterly Rock stopped at that, his lips shifting subtly as he sucked on his teeth in thought for a brief moment. "learning. It's hard to teach a boy that age much, and putting a crown on his head and having all the world bow as he walks by certainly doesn't help. Even so, he's still young and not entirely without hope, though his upbringing until now could certainly have been more... appropriate." he explained diplomatically. "As for your sister, the Queen..." he furrowed his brow briefly, seemingly in thought, before shaking his head and looking back at Tyrion. "The Queen is naturally very busy, caring for her son and keeping the royal court in order. Very little time to herself, as I'm sure you can relate." |

Tyrion nodded. Not much news there then. At least Joffrey hadn't done anything too radical yet, like deciding to declare war on someone over a perceived insult or anything like that. Tyrion was thankful that his father was there, although it was hard to admit that. If Joffrey and Cersei were left to rule the Kingdoms on their own, chaos would reign within weeks. The Seven Kingdoms couldn't wish for a much better Hand than his father, he knew that. After all, it was he who had kept the Kingdoms together during the reign of the Mad King. And although Joffrey wasn't quite the Mad King, they did have things in common. He could only hope that Joffrey would grow up to be a better man than he was a boy, because Tywin wouldn't be there forever. Oh well, those were worries for the future... "And I'm sure that however busy Cersei and I are, you are busier than the two of us combined. I've already taken up too much of your time, I apologise. I should leave you to ruling Westeros. Anything else I should know, before I run along?" |

Tywin shook his head. "Ser Barristan's body along with his personal affects should be prepared in the courtyard to join your train on the way to Storm's End." he said, sitting back down to his work. "Just remember that you'll be representing both our family and the Westerlands at the wedding. People often do stupid things at feasts, as they're deep in their cups, so at least try not to do anything stupider than the rest."

"I shall be on my best behaviour, making sure not to outdo others' stupidities," Tyrion said, finishing his wine and heading to the door. "Goodbye Father, and keep up the good work." He left Tywin to his papers, and closed the door behind him. |
