"See Lancel Manderly of White Harbor, my Lord Hand." Lance bowed to Tywin. "My Lord. It is an honor and a privilege to be here. My family has informed me of the current terms of their agreement with you, and have vested in me the full authority to come to any deal with you today. I have also brought Wylla along." Tywin Lannister sat at his large ebony desk, writing a letter to Lord Rykker of Duskendale, the usual routine he had to go through when a Lordling "forgot" to send the Crown's monthly due to the capital. When the young Manderly was escorted into his chamber, Tywin made absolutely no motion to him, didn't even acknowledge that he was in the room, continuing to scribble in stony silence. It was almost a ritual of his, and he knew well how much it discomforted people, especially those new to the capital and its workings. There were some he left standing in silence for up to an hour. Once, when Lord Garner was brought to him, accused of bribing certain Lannisport officials in an attempt to recuse himself of the shipping tax, Tywin kept him for two and a half hours, at which point the man shattered and confessed to the bribery without a word spoken from his overlord. He had no reason to keep the Manderly boy waiting too long and, satisfied that the wait had done its desired work. Setting his quill down and carefully sealing the letter in its envelope with wax, he gestured for Lancel to have a seat. A quick, careless hand gesture in the general direction of the chair opposite his own was all it took. Placing the now sealed letter off to the side, he finally raised his green eyes to actually look at Lancel. "Ser Lancel. You and your sister are welcome in the capital. I trust your journey was without issue?" he began, the first few sentences between them destined to be identical to the lines Tywin exchanged with nearly every Knight and Lordling that came through the doors of his office. |

Lance had been told to expect a powerful man. He found Tywin to be just that. A very powerful man who knew he was powerful and was determined to remind everyone else of it. Finally he sat. "It was, my Lord. Just a quick hop from White Harbor. The city never ceases to impress. Wynafryd was very glad to see it for the first time." Tywin knew why he was there, and so he would be the one to end the pleasantries. |

Tywin nodded. "Good. I'm sure it shall be a fruitful visit. I understand that you were privy to... whatever happened in Storm's End in the past few days. Information has been coming in rather disjointed, unclear. I would like for you to briefly recollect on what took place, if possible." he explained. |

Lance had not been expecting this. He wasn't quite ready to talk about it. His face dropped as he thought back on what had happened. "It was at the wedding feast. I was sitting in the back with the lesser Lords and knights. I was watching Robb and Margaery. They presented their gifts, some time passed, and then suddenly Margaery started to wobble. I got up to check on her, but before I could get there she collapsed to the floor. I ran over to her as did a young healer. I forget her name but I believe she was accompanying Oberyn Martell. She began tending to Margaery, and then Robb dropped too. "It is my belief that they were poisoned. They both left their cups unguarded while they went to present their gifts. They lost all of their color and their mouths were a pinkish grey. " Margaery made a full recovery and Robb was pronounced dead there at the scene. It was very confusing. I went hunting for clues but found only rumors and hearsay. There was another murder as well. The Lord Morrigan. He was a minor noble from the Stormlands. I never met him during my youth, but it seems strange to me that two murders would happen just an hour and a mile from each other." |

Tywin listened quietly as Lancel recounted the day's events, running a hand along his chin in thought. When Lancel had finished, he nodded his head ever so slightly. "A tragic loss for the Realm, and an even worse one for the North. House Stark has been subject to misfortune of the gravest caliber. I had intended to name Robb Stark as Warden of the North when he and his family journeyed back North from Storm's End. Now, the responsibility of ruling Winterfell falls unto the shoulder of the boy, Brandon. He will have a great burden and grief to carry for the rest of his life, and I find myself troubled by his ability to bear it. I cannot, in good faith, place even greater burden on the boy by granting him his father's Wardenship, nor can the realm afford to exist without a Warden of the North until the boy is of age, not when the threats North of the Wall have become increasingly pertinent." he mused, playing to the predefined tune. "Do you know who is to be the boy's regent during his minority?" |

"There has been much talk and little decision, my Lord. Every Lord in the North wants to catch his ear. His mother suggested a council, but I believe the beauty of having a Warden is that ultimate authority and responsibility fall to one person, and that is far less prone to result in petty politicking and deadlock when immediate action is imperative. For the record, I also believe we live in a time when absolute isolationism is no longer a viable political course for the North, and I fear that many of those Lords playing for the ear of young Bran will attempt to close off the North even more, as they see the deaths of Robb and Eddard as omens that the North should once again focus on taking care of the North. I believe that to be folly. We need our allies to the South more than ever now, as they need us." |

Tywin merely hummed in agreement, silently scanning the boy sitting opposite him. It was evident enough that his skull was less thick and less empty than those of other, more urban Northerners, though the Manderlys were as much Northerners as they were refugees of the South. "And what of your own grandfather, Lord Wyman? It seems that White Harbor, with its distinct culture and faith, would not be entirely agreeable to these Northern isolationists. A regency by such men could cause great harm to your House. Would that mean he shares your views?" |

"Wyman is nothing if not pragmatic. We have more than proven our loyalty to the North, and yet we are still distrusted by some of the more conservative Northmen. It's time for such trivialities to be put aside. We have fought along side the Starks for generations. Who should care if we are named in the light of the Seven? "The Manderlys know that the North is replete with natural resources, but lack a lot of the finer craftsmen to turn those resources into useful products. We know that the North cannot fight alone when the Wall is threatened. We know that tensions between the North and the Crown weaken us all. We would hate to see a world in which a power hungry noble with a quick tongue came along to take the North for his own and drift further from the Crown. That isn't what the people want, and it's not what is best for anyone except the few who stand to profit from the isolation. "My house has long counseled the Starks to increase trade and relations with the South. Times are changing. You can see a difference even between Lord Wyman and myself. I long for a world in which the North is an equal contributor to the prosperity of the Realm." |

"It seems, then, that Lord Wyman and your family would be ideally suited to act as conciliators between the two halves of the Realm, so that we might one day stand united against the actual issues of the world. Would the Lords of the North be capable of accepting your grandfather as their new Warden without the risk of armed resistance? |

Lance smiled. His family was in the process of picking out an appropriate wife for him and husband for the girls. They would make family out of their rivals. Plus with one of the largest standing forces in the North and control of the only profitable Harbor, they wouldn't tolerate enemies. "We are confident in our hold on the North, my Lord." |

Tywin nodded slightly, satisfied. "In which case I'm prepared to name your grandfather Warden of the North, as a means of avoiding chaos and infighting due to Brandon Stark's minority." he began, becoming slightly more dour. "And I intend to solidify the legitimacy of the appointment with a Royal Marriage. I believe your younger cousin Wylla is of the same age as the King." he said, leaving the suggestion unsaid. |

"She is, my Lord. And a fine match they would be. She is growing into a fine young lady. In fact, she was accompanying me to the city. Such a happy coincidence; perhaps the two can meet while we're here. |

Tywin scoffed, the feigned idealism of the presentation a tad too on the nose for his taste. He leaned further across the table towards Lancel. "I'm sure she's lovely. The fact is, she may very well not take a liking to my grandson. He's not quite what you would call a romantic in knight's armor. They can meet if you wish, but I would rather not have such a betrothal decided on the first impressions between two children." he muttered, more quietly than before, putting emphasis on the final word. "There can be no shred of doubt, no margin of error if we are to proceed any further with this." |

"Then it is agreed.". Lance had to swallow his instincts to protect his younger cousin. She was as pragmatic as the rest of the family; Lance seemed to be the only Manderly who wasn't thinking three steps in advance. He had heard rumors of the Prince, and had initially protested when he was told of the arrangement. Nonetheless he was a man of duty and had agreed to go make the deal. " Is there anything else the Crown requires of House Manderly? " |

Tywin shook his head slightly. "You may return to your cousin if that is all. I shall send word to the King of our agreement." |
