Why Things Are; The Way They Are

I feel it may be time to address some of the issues and concerns that have cropped up in the room and explain why certain things are the way they are.

We have used the same rules that XU had started with many years ago. Not much has changed regarding simple procedures and expectations amung the population. As managers we expect everyone who would like to enjoy the room to play by the rules. Each manager has been a member of this room before accepting the management position, and as long term members, we respect and know the importance of each rule.

What we are seeing is a hint of confusion and a handful of unecessary rebellion against the same rules that have been in place for many years. Let me first explain why management has lifted the strictness of these rules to void any confusion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No Outside Links:
The No Outside Link rule was put into place to add respect to the topic of the room. Current management did not come up with this rule. This is a long standing rule. It doesn't matter how long you have been a member of this room, and it doesn't matter how off topic the OOC gets. Offenses had been warned and kicked in the past, years ago, and enforcing this rule still stands today. Management sees no reason to remove this rule as it poses a very useful purpose.

We have had issues in the past (in the ancient and current history of XU) where outside links have been used as a weapon for those who would like to post vulgar and uncivil comments directed at a specific person. XU has also experienced unappropriate links regarding porn and nudity that offend the general population of the room. It has shown in the past that if this rule is given flexibility, people will abuse it. Not everyone, but some will. This will cause uproars which create an atmosphere which is unpleasant to rp in and management has to then spend time outside their busy lives to correct the problem. For those who would not abuse the flexibility of this rule, keeping and re-inforcing it is not a problem for them. They are here to rp and to share comic book related information and jokes with friends, nothing else.

The reason why management has chosen to re-inforce this rule with stricter procedures is because some have decided that it is alright to post outside links throughout the day because a simple warning about breaking a long standing rule means absolutely nothing to them. Some people were abusing the leniency of these warnings. If there are outside links being passed around, history has shown that these links will turn nasty and vulgar given time and since outside links were becoming more common, management decided to tighten up on this rule to avoid future problems.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIC Rule:
The BIC rule is another long standing rule that, until recently, was never questioned. The BIC rule protects the rpers of the room from excessive ooc comentary during rp scenes. However, this rule has a second and very important use. The BIC rule is also used to break up conflict and clear the air by directing everyone back into their character to rp, the very reason why they came here in the first place. When the atmosphere gets too tense due to ooc bickering and aggression, BIC will be called. This does not mean you must get into character. It simply means that once called, the room will revert back into a rp room, not a chatroom. If you would like to continue to chat, take things to whisper as ooc will no longer be tolerated at that point. No, we can not force anyone to play. But we can ask that quarrels be taken into whisper. Those who refuse to consider this rule once its called will recieve a kick. When all else fails, BIC is a failsafe to stop disruptive public arguements that hurt the room's atmosphere.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replacing Management:
There will be no call for replacing management. Management which stands today will stand tomorrow unless a replacement is needed due to a resignation. Management does not make solo calls. Each important decision that the room sees is based off of a managerial meeting between staff, where we reach the best solution we can regarding a problem (and in ALL situations, the opinions of other members). We are all in agreement with whatever change is happening and pinpointing a single manager as the enemy is assuming we work indepentently. Each disruptive occurance is logged so that each member of management can see what happened, regardless of whether they are present or not, and weigh in as a team on the situation. Most of the time, if not all the time, each member of management is in agreeance to how the situation was handled. And if we are not, steps are put in place to resolve the discrepancy so that we can form a stronger and more efficiant staff. I can recall only one instance to where changes needed to be made in regards of handling a specific situation.

Please keep in mind that the current management decided to recreate this room out of love for RP and the good memories they took from XU, which is the same reason why you have rejoined. Although this is our interest, it is not our lives. We can not run XU 24/7, so it is up to everyone else to pitch in and help run it for us while we are away. We need everyone's participation and cooperation to make sure the room remains a safe and enjoyable place to unwind and play. As adults, I feel as though this should not be an issue. We all know the rules. We all have followed the rules. We all should respect the rules. Those who hold hammers are, in my personal opinion, a part of management for the time they accept that hammer until the time they part with it. Hammers are the temporary managers of that room when no present manager is around or when management needs a helping hand in trusted numbers. A Hammer's responsibility is to make judgement calls when the time rises and to keep the peace. We can not do this without everyone's help, cooperation and understanding. As a member of this community, you are valued, appreciated and IMPORTANT and we love having productive and contributing members to enjoy the room with.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Favoritism:
There is a rumor of favoritism. Let me set something straight. Not one manager plays favorites. We decide who is kicked and who is repremanded based on the member-in-question's performance. This decision is a judgement call and that judgement call is logged and sent to the other managers for review, not only for that member but for the manager as well. If you do not break a rule, don't expect to get any flaque. If you do, expect to recieve whatever consequences are appropriate for that time. By logging each occurance, we keep ourselves in a form of checks and balances so nothing is gone without input from the others. If a manager steps out of line during a judgement call, we have evidence in that log and can correct the behavior. If you are kicked, expect to be reviewed. But know that the person who kicked you is in review as well.

If you feel you can not take on the responsibility of keeping this room a pleasant place, we encourage you to find somewhere else to play. If these rules no longer suit your liking, you no longer suit this room's liking. This room is open to everyone who can respect eachother and obide by the rules that have kept this room running for over a decade. If you do not like it, you do not have to come in. But do not think that you can come in and openly disregard and disrespect the rules that have been put in place even before XU had even started.

A Note From Shell:
Frankly, coming solely from me, I do not care about your past or present. Claiming "I disrupted the room because my past haunts me and I'm an angry person, rawr!" is an unacceptable excuse and I have no sympathy or patience for it. There is absolutely no legitamite reason for pissing on this room and it's members and causing an uproar that everyone is upset out. I take such offenses personally due to the fact that these actions hurt the contributing, useful members of XU. After a while, you make it painfully clear that you are not in to enjoy the room, you are in to cause trouble, and management will have to take steps to correct the problem with a ban. Everyone hates that. Management finds no pleasure in kicking people out. I HATE doing it, it stresses other members, and its an unhappy even for everyone involved in XU.

On behalf of Management, except for that last part,
Bast.
