Just a little rant after an extremely stressful day. In the summers I work at a Hallmark store at an outlet mall near my house, since my nanny job only goes through the school year. Anyway, I was listening to the radio and the National Weather Service breaks in with Sever Thunderstorm Warnings, and the possibility of producing tornadoes. Now, living in the area I do we are very prone to tornadoes, I have been in 3 of them, so I didn't really think much of it. At about 5:30 I looked out my back door to see what the sky looked like, and the wind gusted SO strongly that it thrust me out of the door and outside, then slammed the door closed. I had a heck of a time getting back into my store. Then the lights flickered out and it sounded like the roof was being torn off. I tried calling my mom to see what the weather channel was saying, but she wasn't answering the phone. About 15 minutes after this it started POURING, and then I am at my register and I hear it. Not a drip...drip...drip, but gushing water coming from the ceiling near a light fixture and right next to all my greeting cards!!! The security guard walked by and told us all to lock our doors and stay inside because debris was everywhere since THE ROOF BLEW OFF and the mall has been doing some construction, so a bunch of supplies had blown away. The section from my store down about 3 stores...gone! Still no word if it was a tornado...I don't think it was, but that wind was unbelievable. Luckily I got to shut down and go home early though after all of that. I am normally not afraid of this kind of weather, but I was a little freaked out being at the store by myself with none of my family around. I am back at 11 tomorrow morning, and I am afraid to see how much water has gone in. I left a bunch of buckets in the area to catch it, but don't know if that will do it. Anyway....thats my day in a nutshell I am ready for bed! |

Oh my gosh, Courtney! I'm glad you're ok! I'm used to tornadoes as well, and usually go outside instead of seeking shelter when the sirens go off. But the first time we had a tornado warning since I've lived in this apartment, I crawled into my closet with a radio and a flashlight! Being alone really makes it seem more frightening! On a side note, my parents used to live in Cleveland, like... at least 38 years ago. My older brother and sister were born there. We used to go visit some of my parents' friends in the summer when I was younger. I loved it! |

straight line winds can cause as much damage as a tornado...but when winds get that high it is just as scary. Glad you are ok...hope it didn't do to much damage to your store. |

Yeah all seemed well at the mall today...the maintenance team was on site getting the roof fixed and the store next to me even opened at about 1pm this afternoon. They had the most damage, with their roof and the heat/air unit blowing off. No leaks or puddles to be found when I went in this morning, although I held my breath as I was unlocking the door....just no clue what to expect! @ Becky....so cool your folks used to live here!! Cleveland often gets a bad reputation and is the butt of a lot of jokes, but I love it and honestly wouldn't live in any other city. You should come up for a visit sometime...I am sure it is MUCH different than when you visited here as a kid. A lot of cool places to go now
