Ok, peeps. I know we have a lot of Duranies on this board :dance2: :dance2: :dance2: !

Wanted to get your feedback on the DVD that Duran put out about the making of the Rio album.

HOLY HELLS! :frantic: :frantic: :frantic: :frantic: :swoon: :swoon: :swoon: :swoon: :swoon:

I thought it was very, very good! OMG! Musically, the guys go through each instrument in several of the songs on the album and it's incredible. JOHN TAYLOR plays his basslines for HBTR and explains how there are three different basslines going on at once and that they dubbed them into the album in the recording studio, but it was a "bitch" to play live for him :frantic: !!!!

It's really a great video. It's available at Amazon.com and I know some Best Buy's are carrying it as well.

Just wanted to share and see what you guys thought    !!!

I love that DVD! Most of it was filmed in Boston last January.

I was a bad duranie too and didn't even know about it for a while.

It came the same time as a YV goodie from Nichole and it sat on my shelf for days. I'm such a bad duranie. :lmao:

Yay! I got it when it came through amazon's release date. I've only watched it once though... :blush2:

The studio footage was just fantastic. It was so so so inspiring for me. I just had to go pick up my bass and belt out that Rio line. Very cool stuff. Loved the stuff about the drums and the ambient mic. RT's "loud" drums :mal2: have always been a staple for DD and I feel thats what one ingredient RCM lacked. The bass stuff was amazing too. :pimp:
I loved how RT and NR looked like little kids behind those mixing tables. :bouncing:

:ha: I was a very, very, verrrrrrry bad Duranie as well :blush2: . I had the dvd for over a month before I cracked it open :swoon: !!!!

I got the dvd right before the Dallas show was cancelled and then after it got canned, I was on a DD strike :annoyed: :lmao: !

However....my DFW Duranie girls kept on and on and ON about how wonderful it was and so I decided to take a look see :ha: !!!

Oh, Robin! I am not a John girl, I'm more of a Roger girl but HOLY SHIT!!!! JOHN! To be able to see his TALENT showcased like that was unbelievable :frantic: . I have such a newfound admiration for him! Haha, Julie knows the story of my sister always being the John girl and me the Roger girl, so I always felt like I couldn't like him because he was my sisters :ha: :blush2: :lmao: (11 year old mentality in 1984, people!!!!).

And I totally thought of you, Ryan! When I was seeing the different basslines broken apart, I was like "hmmm...I wonder if Ryan's seen this?!!!" :frantic: :frantic: :frantic: !!!

I actually thought of Jon Langford, too because I think that he would totally dig seeing that :dntknw: ! I would SO LOVE to see a dvd like this for Your Vegas! How cool would that be?!

Eeeeeek. I didn't like RCM, Ryan  ! Felt that is sounded too different from Duran's style. I miss their old sound. Have you ever heard "Beautiful Colours" and "Virus" ? I think songs like these that somehow didn't make Astronaut :annoyed: sound more like Duran. All this techno/electro stuff is just not them. Well, maybe it's them now, but I don't like it as well  !

Cool that it was filmed in Boston, Kerri!!!! Ayiyiyiyi! I love it!

I found out about the DVD the day after it was released and felt like such a horrible Duranie!! I tried like heck to track the thing down locally but in the end I had to order it on line.
I Love it! Love It too!!! I totally agree with the 3 bass lines. I had no idea too. That's prob why they never play it anymore even though it such an AMAZING song.

Yep the recent Live stuff on there was filmed in Boston last January. In fact, I was on my way over the pond to London for the first time when the guys were heading over the pond in the opposite direction.

Have you heard about Something You Should Know? It's a documentary film about Duranies. Here's a link for it.

Oh I forgot to mention that I emailed the Director and creator of the Film about a release date (it was supposed to be released in 2008). Just waiting to hear back from him.

I just got an answer.

Hi Nichole,

Thank you for your inquiry about "Something You Should Know"! I am just as eager to share the film as you are to see it:) The film was in fact ready for a Christmas release, however, my reps urged me not to release it as we are still in distribution and tv discussions. This release would have likely hurt the broadcast opportunities in America and around the world. The film is 100 percent ready and an initial special edition is already printed on DVD. So believe me it is absolutely coming out and will be on a screen near you soon!
Very Best and Happy New Year!
M
Ps fell free to distribute and publish this message.

Soo hopefully we will be hearing something very soon!

No Doubt is in that doc!

@ Michele, yea I like RCM only for the fact that its DD. I guess there's that loyalty thing I go on. The Valley and RCM really are a couple of good songs though. That bass breakdown in Valley is just heavenly. JT was basically on top of me during it at biloxi!
and Yes I L-O-V-E BC and Virus. Virus is the best thing they've done in years. Have you heard Lonely Business? That was supposed to have my homegirl Gwen Stefani on it, but recording conflicts came up. That song is pure genius though. I wish sooo bad they would go an indie-styled route. I mean these young bands like YV, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, The Bravery and countless others are inspired by DD's core sound: "Disco Meets Punk" :frantic:
Get back to that sound boys!

If they ever went back to that style and tried to recapture the Rum Runner atmosphere, I believe not only the band and critics, but most of all the fans, would be satisfied. I, for one, want a rawer, cruncher sound. Ala, Anyone Out There or Sound of Thunder. :friends:

I bought the Rio dvd a few weeks ago but I still haven't had a chance to watch it. :blush2: Maybe I can finally squeeze it in this weekend, sounds fantastic!

I'm probably one of the only people here that loves RCM. I think it still sounds like Duran, maybe filtered through a bit of a different style, but I like how they're not afraid to mix it up, even if people don't like it. I can't imagine not having songs like The Valley, Skin Divers, Box Full o'Honey. But yes, it definately doesn't sound like "classic Duran" but I don't know that they can really turn back the clock and re-create that sound, or if you really would want them to repeat themselves over and over; the Rum Runner days were a brilliant moment in time. But maybe working with more artists like those mentioned (YV!) or people like Mark Ronson would channel back some of that same type of energy. I also wish they would have proper recordings of songs like Beautiful Colors and Salt in the Rainbow.

Been waiting a long time for the Something I Should Know documentary, glad to see things are still in the works for its release. Some of you may have heard of the Sing Blue Silver duranie parties that some members of dd.com had put together. In 2005, the director, M. Douglas, was at the Pioneer theater/ Mo Pitkins in NY and they showed a clip of the film, it looked really awesome.

:frantic: :swoon: Mary! You HAVE to see it!!!! Did I mention I liked it?! :ha: :lmao:

I understand what you are saying, I just wish they'd kept some of their raw/edginess to their sound. It's like they got allllll wrapped up in the Timbaland/Timberlake thing and were trying too hard or something :dntknw: ! I think there's a way to get some of those guitar riffs back as well as those sweet basslines, and still sound current and up to date. I DO enjoy The Valley as well as BFOH and RCM. My ears rang for three days after the show in May :ha: ! Yes, there's def. bass on RCM, it's just different.

On the video, John talks about HBTR and he has to use a pick on one of the basslines because it's just too difficult to play with his fingers. That made me think of JL, too  . Accccckkkk!!! It's so good :eat: :eat: :eat: :heats: :heats: :heats: !!!!! That was a major run on sentence, but I'm tired and you know what I mean  !!!

SITR and Lonely Buisness    Love them both dearly.

I guess maybe what it boils down to is that I miss Andy?! :dntknw: !
