![]() Parents of students at a California high school are reacting to news that a long-time male high school science teacher is going to return after spring break as a woman. The teacher, Gary Sconce, informed the Yosemite School District that he will be back in the classroom April 22 as his "true self," a woman by the name of Karen Adell Scot, KFSN-TV reported Thursday. "When you aren't who you really are, it's like being smothered. It's like being rolled in a wave, if you've ever been rolled in a wave in the ocean where you can't find your way up, you don't know which direction you've been turned," Scot told the station. The 56-year-old husband, father and award-winning teacher came out to his family last April. Since then he has been undergoing hormone replacement therapy to transition to the person he says he is intended to be. He has been a teacher for 24 years School district Superintendent James Sargent announced that Sconce was "in the midst of gender transition" in a March 19 letter to the parents of all 650 students at Yosemite High, the Fresno Bee reported. “We are committed to facilitating this in a sensitive way to all concerned,” superintendent James Sargent said in the letter posted on the Bee website. The Bee said the gender change has caused many reactions. It said in a letter to a weekly newspaper, community resident Kathi Bales was strongly opposed. "I see this as an assault on the minds and morals of our children. It blurs the lines of what is right and wrong," she wrote. The paper quoted Scot as saying that kind of intolerance is what causes many transgendered people to commit suicide, or become victims of violence or murder. Scot said he won't be "pushing any social agenda" with students and will continue to "run a conservative and disciplined class." KFSN said news of the gender change is causing all sorts of reaction from the community, including from some of Sconce's former students. “Some parents are pulling their kids out of classes and things like that, and some of the staff is uncomfortable, which I don't understand because if you work with someone that long, they're not a different person, they're the same person just a different gender now," Natalie Choin told the station. Jeffrey Turro added, "My feeling is if they come out and bring a community engagement and bring out community kids to discuss it, maybe bring out psychologists to discuss the changes you go through and why someone goes through that, it might be easier on the community up here." http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/25055762/transgender-teacher-to-return-to-california-classroom-as-true-self _________________________________________ I just know his family is proud. If it was such a problem why have children, get married? Why give these creatures press? |

What is the difference between trans sexual and trans gender? |

Here's what a someone who considers herself "transsexual" says when asked if there is a difference. Well to be completely honest that would depend on who you talk to. Some will say absolutely not, and if you research enough you will see why they feel that way. Others will say most certainly yes and again, with research you would find their reasoning as well. Here's my way of putting it. A transgender person is a person whose physical body is not in alignment with his or her gender identity, either all or part of the time. In other words, the body says male by societal and medical standards, but the mind, or gender identity, says woman, or vice versa. It is also possible for the mind, or gender identity, to say neither man nor woman, or both man and woman. Regardless, the physical body and the gender identity do not match, either all or part of the time. There are also those who define transgender in a broader sense that encompasses anyone who transgresses traditional gender norms, either intentionally or unintentionally, on a regular basis and/or who suffers repercussions (discrimination, homophobia, Tran phobia, threats, violence) because of perceived or actual transgressions. A person’s gender identity may or may not come into play here. For example, there are some women who are very “masculine” by our society’s standards, but who have a feminine gender identity all of the time. There are some men who are very “feminine” by our society’s standards, but who have a masculine gender identity all of the time. These people would likely fall under the second definition of transgender, but not the first. These people may or may not see themselves as transgender. There are some who identify transsexual people as transgender. Many times, headlines will refer to someone who I would consider to be a transsexual person — someone who has transitioned, is going through a transition, on hrt, or who is living full-time in the gender that matches that person’s gender identity — as a transgender man or woman. This is an acceptable reference to some people and unacceptable to others. There are transsexual people (like myself) who also use the term transgender to refer to themselves. There are others who have never used the term transgender to refer to themselves, and who, after transition, do not use the term transsexual, either. After the surgery they use the proper gender identity, they are men or women. It is in my in opinion impossible to adequately represent all other people’s positions, identifications, or situations. I choose to respect everyone’s definitions because for me the bottom line is that they are all just words. Only we know who we really are and the words won’t change anything. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091201144316AA72Uxq |

If a teacher is "naturally" an alcoholic, are they allowed to show up to school drunk? There is no need for the man to play dress-up while at work. |

Many years ago I had heard that a true transgender person was someone who had the body of one sex, but the genetic & chromosomal makeup of the opposite sex. Looks like that theory has been thrown out the door over the decades. I'm sure a lawsuit was involved in the change of thinking somewhere along the lines in order to accommodate some group who felt they were being discriminated against. |

That's the thing: You wouldn't need to take hormones if you were being who you "are." |

I've read trans sexuals have had the complete surgery and the trans gender class keep everything below the waist. Straight creeps claim to be trans genders in order to spy on real women in the rest room. Trans genders should not be provided any protection under the law, anyone can claim to be trans gender. |
