Police released surveillance video Tuesday showing the attackers in the apparent hate-crime beating and robbery of a gay couple in Center City last week.

The video shows a group of about a dozen white men and women in their early 20s who are "clean cut" and well-dressed, police said.

About 10:45 p.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of Chancellor Street, two men, ages 27 and 28, were approached by the group, police said.

The group made disparaging remarks about their sexuality, police said.

Someone in the group asked whether the men were a couple, Capt. Frank Banford, commanding officer of Central Detectives, said last week.

"Yes, do you have a problem?" one of the men replied, Banford said.

The group then attacked the two men, holding them while members punched them in the face, head, and chest, police said.

During the attack, one of the victims dropped a bag containing his mobile phone, wallet, and credit cards, police said. One of the attackers picked up the bag.

The attackers then fled and were last seen heading north on 16th Street toward Walnut Street.

Both victims were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital. One was treated for bone fractures and cuts to his face. He underwent surgery and had his jaw wired shut.

I used to do a good bit of work in and around Philly. It can be a very rough burg. But that area is pretty much nightlife central. I'm shocked something like that happened in Center City.

I know this is all over DL and the news media, Joe My God etc but I am just outraged at this. Just in case someone has not seen this story, this is the first report with many more moment by moment updates and developments.

DL seems to think they've been identified from a Catholic reunion dinner photo at a local restaurant. Reports also say that since they've been ID'd, they are scheduling attorney appearances at the police station. None have shown up as yet. Most are still scrubbing their homophobic comments on their Facebook and Twitter accounts before their names are known.

To all the boys and girls who participated in this violent action: :fire

It's entirely possible they're from high income backgrounds. I've been amazed many times over the years at the attitudes and actions of people who came from very privileged families. The arrogance and hatred for anyone "not like us" can be palpable with some of them.

Never let your guard down. Don't slow down and address people in the street- keep moving.

They should never have answered the mob.

Sorry, but I'm not going to live like that.

I carry myself in a way that strangers don't mess with me. (That is not blaming the victims because they are blameless; just pointing out that I refuse to life in fear.)

You really do have to carry yourself in a certain way on city streets. It's little different than the call of the wild. The weakest one in the pack will get picked out for attack. You have to look like you're not weak. It's not foolproof, but it will certainly keep a lot of people from hassling you.

WOW, Philly grows em quite nice, I'd say.

"One of the things I’ve learned is that sometimes it takes a horribly negative experience to get people out of their seats, for them to be active and engaged. It’s not necessarily because they’re opposed but because they aren’t aware of the need. So we are going to be sure to utilize this horrible event to make sure that they hear about it. I’m going to be bringing two people with me who will be able to tell them all about it." - Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims, vowing to take the Philadelphia gay-bashing victims with him to the state capitol to spur attention to the pending bill that would re-add sexual orientation and gender identity to state hate crime laws. Sims represents the Center City area where the attack took place.

An Update:

A police source said this week that they were nearly "ready to go" in terms of making arrests and said charges are expected "this week." A key witness, the source said, was due in for an interview Monday, "the girl who was right in the middle of it all." After that, the source said, the District Attorney's Office will review all of the evidence collected in the case and make a decision about charges. "People are going to get locked up," the source said.

As the men were being attacked, one of their bags, containing a cell phone and wallet, fell to the ground and one of the assailants took it. A source close to the investigation said one of the members of the group said she picked up the bag in the melee thinking it belonged to a companion and, upon realizing it did not, dropped it at 16th and Walnut streets. The bag was discovered by a homeless person, who used one of the victim's credit cards. "The credit card was used several different places, so we've had to go to all the places the card was used and investigate," the source said.

As of Monday morning, police had completed 18 interviews with members of the group and witnesses. Each interview, the source said, takes about four hours. Prolonging the process, the source added, is that each person in the group has retained a separate, private attorney. "What happens with cases like this is that, if you rush it and don't do a good job, they'll start throwing out charges later on. These kids all have top-notch attorneys, so if our case isn't put together on our end, they're going to pick it apart. But we've put together a great case for the DA and we'll be working in conjunction with the DA to bring the charges."
