Not nearly as entertaining as his interview with Bette Davis, but still fun.

Mae was very very rich because she was a teetotaler who invested her money in Los Angeles commercial real estate in the 1930s and 1940s, whereas poor Bette was (supposedly) a boozer who wasted her money on worthless husbands, etc.

Back around '77 or '78 when I was in L.A. a lot for work I used to drive by The Ravenswood to see a good friend of mine who lived nearby. I had no idea Mae West not only lived there, but owned the joint until we were leaving for dinner one evening and as we passed the building several of the windows in an apartment up near the top were wide open and the most tacky purple draperies were flapping out into the wind. I said "look at that, how ugly", and she informed me that was Mae West's apartment.

And yet they both ended up worm food, as will you and I.

That cheered you up? It was such an uncomfortable interview. I felt sorry for the old broad. Like hauling out a fossil for mocking.

And Dick Cavett, like that old, greasy, pukey guy on Bravo who interviews celebs, is so pretentious.

Now get off my lawn.

I couldn't tell if Mae was eating during that interview or if she had developed some sort of old age thing with her mouth (I've seen some old people who always look like they're chewing on something).

When our parents would come to LA to visit us our father liked to go to the Hollywood Memorial cemetery to see the famous graves.

We were standing over a very famous grave, Sam Goldwyn or Darryl Zanuck or somesuch and our father commented: "He was a big deal, but now he's in the ground..."

Mae was having just as much fun as Dick was.
Mae knew exactly what she was doing - she was politicking for her next movie, which was then nearly in pre-productia.

She was 83 when that interview was done. She died 4 years later. The old gal was a trooper.
