60 Minutes' veteran reporter Bob Simon was killed in a car crash in New York City on Wednesday evening.

Simon, 73, was travelling in a Lincoln town car that rear-ended a Mercedes-Benz stopped at a red light on 12th Avenue near West 30th Street around 6.45pm, and then slammed into the metal barriers separating the lanes.

The CBS reporter was unconscious with head and torso injuries when he was rushed to Mount Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital in the city. He was later pronounced dead.

The accident was under investigation.

Police on the scene cut off the roof off the Lincoln to free Simon and the driver.

The driver of the Lincoln, a 44-year-old man, suffered two broken legs and a broken arm and was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was in stable condition.

The 23-year-old driver of the Mercedes, who was not injured, claimed the accident was the fault of the livery cab driver.

'He swerved into me,' the driver of the Mercedes told the New York Post. 'He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car.'

He is survived by his wife, Françoise Simon, daughter, Tanya, who is a producer for 60 Minutes, and his grandson, Jack.

An emotional Scott Pelley announced the tragic news on CBS while fighting back tears.

'We have some sad news from within our CBS news family. Our 60 Minutes colleague Bob Simon was killed this evening,' said Pelley.

'Bob’s daughter Tanya is a talented producer for 60 Minutes and tonight our thoughts are with Tanya, Bob’s family and his many, many friends.'

Pelley later tweeted: 'One of the great writers of a generation has passed. Bob Simon was a journalist of extraordinary courage.'

Simon was born on May 29, 1941, in the Bronx, New York City, and graduated from Brandeis University in 1962, receiving a degree in history.

He started his 50-year career with CBS News in 1967.

Two years later, Simon joined the network's foreign bureaus, where he was until 1981 when he became the State Department correspondent.

He covered the Vietnam War and was one of the last to leave on a helicopter out of Saigon.

He went on to report from war zones in Portugal, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, the Persian Gulf, and Yugoslavia. He covered the conflict in Northern Ireland and U.S. military actions in Grenada, Somalia and Haiti.

To suffer that kind of damage that limo must have been flying when it hit the Mercedes.
