ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —A former CNN correspondent was shot three times late Tuesday night during an attempted robbery at an Albuquerque motel.

Former CNN anchor and Manzano High School graduate Lynne Russell told Action 7 News she and her husband were robbed at gunpoint at the Motel 6 near Coors and Iliff around 11:30 p.m.

Her husband, Chuck de Caro, worked as a correspondent for CNN as well.

Russell said they were exhausted Tuesday night and decided to go to a motel to rest. She went out to the car to get something when a man put a gun to her head, dragged her back into the motel room and demanded her valuables.

Her husband grabbed his gun and the two exchanged gunfire. Russell said the suspect fired first.

Police said both men fired multiple rounds.

Russell said her husband was hit three times. He underwent surgery at University of New Mexico Hospital and is expected to recover.

Officers found the other man in the parking lot. He died at the hospital.

Police have not yet released his name.

What in the hell was a former CNN anchor and her former CNN correspondent husband doing at a low end garbage Motel 6? I smell a rat.

:eek Wow! I LOVED Lynne Russell (and Headline News,) she was the absolute coolest anchor woman ever! I hope everything's alright. If CNN (or anyone but FOX News) put her back on the air I would watch.

She used to live in Atlanta, Tybee. Actually a lot of CNN/Headline News people probably did. Did you know any of them or see any of them out and about?

I've seen several of them over the 35 years they've been in operation. I saw Sanjay Gupta a couple years ago in Target. :lol

Lynne Russell was a reserve Fulton Co. Deputy Sheriff when she was in Atlanta.

I wondered about the motel 6 myself. Strange.

Well, maybe they were just on a road trip and needed a place to spend the night without reservations or anything. I guess cringe can happen anywhere.

Are Motel 6's that bad? You guys will probably laugh, but I love, love, love Holiday Inn! I have ever since I was a child and I was fascinated with the colorful logo with the colored lines coming out of it. Now, I'm just insanely attracted to the deep shade of green they use in their signage and I feel so happy from the way they smell inside. Their corporate scent really triggers something in my brain that says "vacations! Summer! Theme parks!"

Their corporate branding people are brilliant.

(Maybe Motel 6's smell nice to Lynne Russell?)

How sad that both CNN liars were not removed permanently from this life.

Let me put it this way OO, Holiday Inn is like the Ritz Carlton compared to Motel 6.

Motel 6 has the distinction of being the motel chain with the highest number of crimes committed on their properties.

Somehow the scenario doesn't fit in my mind. Russell's husband comes out of the shower, grabs his gun from the safe and has a shoot out with the wannabe robber who was already holding his gun? Reminds me of the shoot out in Harry Zimm's office....lol And it's not like Motel 6 has suites and if it was valuables he was after, wouldn't they be in the safe? BTW I didn't know Motel 6 had safes in their rooms, learn something everyday.

Lynne Russell, 68, had stopped for the night at a Motel 6 (bottom left) Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Tuesday with her husband Chuck de Caro (both pictured center) when she was reportedly grabbed by an unidentified robber who demanded valuables from her room. De Caro, who was in the shower at the time, reportedly burst into the room, triggering a tense exchange during which Russell slipped him a gun, which he used to kill the assailant - though not before he sustained three bullet wounds himself. Russell was the first female anchor of a major network news show, and worked for CNN from 1983 until 2001 (she is pictured top left on CNN Headline News).

Now we know who Bruce is trying to look like! Lynn has had some excellent work.

If this is true that robber certainly had low expectations. If I was going to rob a motel guest I think I'd choose a better place than Motel 6.

Some at DL think drug deal gone bad. She's a big gun lover, said gun was in her purse which she handed to her naked husband?

It turns out the couple was staying at Motel 6 because they were traveling with their pet dog (or dogs.) It was reported on CNN tonight.

This is totally understandable. I've never taken my dogs on overnight trips, but I always figured if I did I would stay at Red Roof Inn because they make a point of advertising the fact they are pet friendly. It makes total sense that they would have done some research and found that Motel 6 was too.

I'm totally #TeamLynneRussell

(Besides I think people are being elitist about the whole Motel 6 thing.)

They haven't been married a year yet and my pet is worth staying at a better hotel, not some flea bag in the seedy part of town.

Here in Europe Pepe the Schnauzer is welcome in many nice hotels and also in restaurants in Paris, where he is sometimes given free water and cooked chicken breast.
