![]() In an act of defiance, hundreds of tourists descended upon the beach at the Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica and interrupted the nesting of olive ridley sea turtles, many of which were forced to return to sea without laying their eggs. The ignorant and abhorrent behavior at the country’s second-most important nesting sites for olive ridley sea turtles was first reported by the Environment Ministry’s Workers Union (SITRAMINAE) and followed up by The Tico Times. People touched the sea turtles, stood atop of nests, snapped photos using flash, stood in the way of turtles, and even placed their children on top of the turtles for photos, refuge administrator Carolos Hernandez told La Nacion. “Tourism is out of control,” William Borgest, one of many who were outraged, wrote on the SITRAMINAE Facebook page. “National and foreign tourists literally do what they want. They believe that the country is an amusement park with free access. There is no respect for the nature nor its processes.” www.grindtv.com/wildlife/tourists-disrupt-nesting-of-olive-ridley-sea-turtles-at-ostional-wildlife-refuge/#OTsujYF7xATZc3eQ.99 Image size reduced Edited by Tybee, Sep 14 2015, 08:13 PM.

I think it's a combination of arrogance and stupidity. So many people are only concerned with getting what they want and couldn't care less about the repercussions of their actions. I can't believe they don't have laws down there prohibiting people from bothering nesting sea turtles. We certainly do here on the Georgia barrier islands. |

In most states where sea turtles nest they have lots of rules like no flash photography or going close to them. |

When an Hawaiian monk seal hits the beach for a little R&R and work on the tan, you'd think President Obama was on holiday. The area is litterly roped off, security is present and many UH profs come to study the poor dear. No flash, no touching, no feeding, nada. Stay away. I get the feeling some of the seals enjoy all the hoopla. |

I remember being on the beach in North Carolina at night. There were civilians patrolling to tell people the turtles were laying eggs and to keep them away. People were very respectful. |

Costa Rica's 2nd highest source of revenue is from tourism. They probably don't want to do anything to keep the tacky tourists (most of them from the US) from getting their jollies gawking at the sea turtles. If they keep letting this happen they'll eventually have no sea turtles there since there won't be any new hatchlings and the adults who are imprinted on that beach, and will only lay their eggs there, will die off. I assume all those eggs that didn't get laid were expelled into the sea. |

My favorite DL take-down was the pastor-cunt in Houston who was throwing a birthday party for herself -- and Jesus demanded you give her a Gucci handbag to get in. That "pastor" even made the papers thanks to DL. |

We hope those precious little citizens enjoy long happy and healthy lives and that something very bad happens to that disgusting stinkfish in the photo. |

Probably I hear the beaches are beautiful but the government like most in Central and South America is highly corrupt. |

I can only hope those turtles came back in the middle of the night when the beach was empty or at least much less crowded. Around here they almost always lay their eggs in the early morning hours. |

We would volunteer to watch as the eggs hatch to protect the babies as they rush to the sea. |

This is like Mike Huckabee saying, "We would go to jail for Kim Davis." It makes the speaker feel good about himself, and he gets to brag to others, without the slightest worry that he will ever be inconvenienced by following through on the noble offer. |

Here many colleges that have marine biology courses send students out to identify where the eggs have been buried and they place metal cages over them to keep the raccoons from digging the eggs up. Once they hatch the students uncover the hatchlings and protect the babies from the sea gulls while they make their trek to the water. The baby turtles float out to big floating kelp beds and live there for years until they're too big to be taken by gulls and pelicans. Many years ago I went out to Cumberland Island on a weekend during hatching season with an old friend who became a Zoologist with the Smithsonian. It's an amazing site to see all those baby turtles crawling up out of the sand. Edited by Tybee, Sep 15 2015, 01:21 PM.

I love driving out to Kapolei and swimming with thes magnificent creatures. You're not supposed to but it is fun to hop a ride on one. They don't seem to mind. |

You get a sense if they are in distress. Often times they will continue to dive with you, circle back and cruise along side. Some are very social. A honu is often very trusting which makes them such incredible encounters. |

We're already seeing the signs of human over-population. What will 2050 look like? 2100? Glad I'll be long gone. Enjoy Nature while we have it. |
