I wiped out on my bike last night and had to go to Urgent Care to have gravel removed from my arm and leg, very nasty "road rash." I'm okay, that's the good news. The bad news is that I had to miss a day of school today. When I told the doctor what I did she said, "I'm giving you a note to stay out of school tomorrow." I was absolutely crushed! I guess that tells me I'm pursuing the right career. Also-and I felt very uneasy about this-she said, because the pain is so intense, I need to take Lortab for a day or two so that my partner can clean out remaining gravel that will work it's way out of the wound and sterilize and wrap it back up. I felt weird about that, but it's a totally different situation than when I had a psychiatrist basically giving me an endless script for 8 years of narcotics. I talked privately to a FB friend through instant messenger last night (and today) who is a recovered addict and very vocal about his struggle. He said in the "recovery community" it's considered okay for former addicts to take prescription pain killers IF AND ONLY IF they are prescribed/ordered by a doctor so I am okay taking it. The bottom line, I suppose, is that I need to be able to take care of it enough to not get infected. It all made me sleep very late so it's good I didn't try to go into work today...but I totally missed it. We'll see about tomorrow. |

I wiped out on a motorbike once. I was all alone on a road that circumnavigates Bora Bora, coming back to our overwater bungalow with wine. I hit a bump and went flying over the handlebars. As if that wasn't enough, the road was made of ground coral and ripped my skin off. Needless to say, I did not go on the shark feeding on the reef the next day. |

I'm glad you are OK. Be careful with the opiate based pain killers. Have someone who you trust like your husband or a parent keep them, and dole them out to you. Good luck. Your friend is correct it's not a relapse if you are prescribed them and take them that way. Do you go to NA at all? |

OO, did you inform the ER physician that you had addiction issues and that you did not want a prescription for anything addictive? Glad you're ok. Take a couple of Aleves and tough it out. |

We wiped out on our bicycle 2 months ago and the hematoma on our ankle is still not completely gone, though much improved. |

Last summer, my front bicycle tire got caught in a gap between a driveway and the road as I came flying up to avoid a truck coming around the corning in the wrong lane. My bike went from 20+ MPH to zero in one second and send me across the sidewalk. It was dramatic enough to stop traffic. I think I got so caught up in the idea of being so resilient in such an ordeal that I kept telling everyone, myself included, "All without breaking a bone!" I only realized later that I had clearly broken a bone in my finger, which, due to my bravado and stupidity, heeled in a weird way. |

I don't understand why adults want to ride bikes. They're dangerous! Kids tend to be reckless, but the rest of us are old enough to know better. Why not just walk? PS: Glad you're OK -- but maybe you should stop taking chances with your health? |

Damn! That makes my story seem tame in comparison. |

Well, riding a bike isn't all that reckless, at least not if you do it right. ha ha It's great exercise and a tremendous stress reliever for me. I really, really love it-more than just working out. So, it's worth the risk for me. |

When she said I needed Lortab, I was taken aback and when she left the room I talked to my partner about it. He said that if the doctor said I needed it-I needed it. I was in such pain that I didn't want to complicate it by telling her about my addiction issues. Everyone says that a day or two (or three) of Lortab is just something that people need from time to time (like if I ever had surgery or something.) I am really missing school, though so I think I will skip it in the morning and just tough it out so that I can go in. I really need to prove to myself that I am strong enough to go in even if I have injury/sickness issues. The problem and pain comes from the burns I got from scraping against the road (road rash,) but I gotta be stronger than the pain. I feel very confident that I am stronger than the old addiction. |

Well of course the doctor would say you need them since you weren't forthcoming about your issues. No reputable doctor would have given a prescription for Lortab to someone they knew had addiction issues. If you have one brain cell left you'll flush those things down the toilet.

Okay. You're right. I'm going to get up tomorrow and go to work and tough it out. I've worked so hard to get my life back on track, I'm not going to be stupid and jeopardize it. |

Good boy. Like I said, if you have pain take 2 Aleve (or generic Naproxen Sodium which are much cheaper and are exactly the same as Aleve).

Me too. I'm determined to change and grow as a person. The old me would have milked this injury (and the doctor's note) for everything it was worth. The new me got up at 5:30, got my partner to wrap up the bandages and went into work stiff, sore and bruised with NO pain pills. I'm so glad I did, my critic teacher (it turns) out has come to work for two periods in her life (after injuries) in a wheel chair! Everyone at my school works so hard and they all stay about two hours (or more) after school ends. I'm trying to make a good impression by keeping up with them. that's why I volunteer on Saturdays to work on the concession stand at the game. Being a teacher is really tough, long hours and lots of nights and weekends (to help out at events, plays, games, etc.) But, I'm determined to succeed at this. |

Here ins Europe people take only paracetamol(Tylenol?). Aspirin is not even used anymore.
