Promises, promises . . .

I have a friend/downgraded-to-acquaintance who is worth millions. He is so cheap that he bought a very low end Chrysler and told them not to install a radio. He told me, with pride, that he knew he could get one at a discount store for over $100 less. Yes, I know that's how he still has money, by not being frivolous with is, but come on!

For some reason, I thought of him when imagining MPC car shopping.

I'm all for frugality, no matter what your personal resources are. Of course everyone has to pay what they can afford, but anyone who has the resources and goes as cheap as possible is just dumb. You get what you pay for, and in most cases you end up spending more when you buy on the cheap because you have to replace it more often.

Similar to your friend, I have an old work associate who is from a very wealthy Atlanta family. He inherited around $40 million when his father died 15 years ago. We went to lunch one day, and he drove his 9 year old Buick (which was bad enough). He needed to stop by an auto repair shop to see if they had finished work on his teenage son's car (also an old clunker). The repair man told him they were waiting on a small part $5.00 they had to send their man out to get, and the car would be ready that day. My cheap friend asked, "are you going to charge me a markup on that part?". The repair man responded "well yes, we have to send someone to the parts store to buy it". You would have thought he'd just been told he'd lost his entire inheritance. He fussed and fumed all through lunch about that tiny markup on a $5.00 part. I wanted to knock his teeth in.

The only thing my friend splurges on is male hookers.

He will rent a very expensive one for the weekend in NYC. He will take them to the city's most expensive restaurants and let them order both food and wine "off" the menu.

At home, he would never dream of buying a bottle of wine for himself that costs over $7. It's so odd to me, but it's not my life so I really have no business commenting.

We ordered the absolute minimum stripped down model with air/heating/radio/cd/mp3/radio, all of which are standard included. Nothing else. 5 year warranty is also standard included.

Sadly with cars these days, the more options you buy the more things there will be to repair later on. Luxury options are nice, but it's stupid to pay for options you have no need for.

We shall do devotias at the beautiful Russian Orthodox churches that we encounter on the way - perhaps we will find ourself kneeling beside Blessed Vladimir P!

I doubt Vlad The Impaler ever sets foot in a church unless it's for a photo op. :lol

So why don't you move to Russia since you like him that much?

We shall visit there at some point, we have not seen it yet.

From what we hear from people who have been there it is the land of opportunity.

Just don't tell anyone you're gay. Russia is more homophobic now than at any time in history, thanks to Putin.

My Toyota Tacoma has crank windows. Never had one problem except new tires now and then. I have another super expensive car that summers in the mechanics shop because it has every electronic, fancy shit stuff known to man that seems & to be like a spoiled child and has a tantrum if you want to take it for a drive.

Mrs PC, I think you are wise to keep it simple. For my money, power steering is the only have to have. Well that and a motor.....
