a kind of creepy looking kid was running it, filled us up and we used our debit card. We were a bit nervous and when we punched our PIN into the little machine we did not take care to see if he was watching over our shoulder or not. We imagine he sent the card number and PIN to Russia or somewhere and , well, you know, Should we be worried? Discuss! Edited by Erna, Oct 2 2015, 12:12 PM.

If you are that worried, contact the bank and ask for a new debit card. |

I'd be more worried about the scanners some ID thieves put into credit card readers, and phishing emails that look authentic but are really meant to steal your bank/CC info. |

Is your debit card a chip card? If so it would be difficult for him to do anything even if he saw your pin # as you entered it. |

How does the chip work for online shopping? |

Online purchases with chip cards are handled the same way as magstrip cards. You have to rely on the security provided by the merchant, and that's why it's important not to make online purchases with debit cards if at all possible. |

We think it has a chip but it also has a black strip on the back |

Yes, all the chip cards still have the magstrip since not all merchants have the equipment to read the chips at this point. I'm sure we're years away from being able to get rid of the magstrip altogether. Of course, now the question is did you run the card through his machine by the chip or did you swipe the magstrip? If the equipment handles chip technology always make sure you use that instead of swiping. |

the card went all the way inside the little machine and we punched our PIN when the card was inside, it was not swiped. maybe it will be ok and we are just paranoid. Edited by Erna, Oct 2 2015, 04:22 PM.

I'm not familiar with these types of machines. I haven't seen anything like that here yet. But the UK has been years ahead of the USA in credit card pin technology. So it sounds like you're AOK. It's only recently that I received the last chip card replacement for my old magstrip credit cards. My debit card still doesn't have it and the bank says they can't say when it will be available. One big reason I never carry my debit card on my person. So I guess this weekend you'll be planning a nice drive into the countryside? You must feel like a bird who just got his wings. Some merchants have tried to make the card work by swiping but it does not work that way. It works only when the card is inserted, bareback, deeply into the slot, at which time we punch in the PIN. No country trips this weekend, Tybee, because we must attend AA at 5 this afternoon to fulfill our functia as Treasurer and again tomorrow to fulfill our functia as secretary. But we shall drive with Pepe to the beautiful Coasta Brava for the AA conventia in a couple of weeks! |
