It looks like Pepe will be sent to dog heaven Monday; after consulting with his life-long physician

Private crematia right afterwards in another part of town.
Pepe is not getting better but is going downhill and his Physician confirmed that the c is spreading and will only get worse. This must be the best thing to do for Pepe now to spare him suffering because he certainly is not enjoying himself now and can barely walk. We are very very sad because this comes three years after the divorce and we can't help recalling the very happy memories of the three of us together. Pepe would be 15 on July 26.
We are even thinking of self-euthanasia, although we are sure this bad period will pass.

I am truly sorry to hear this. I know you love him so much. A faithful and loving companion. Honestly, my heart aches for you. The next few months will be tough.

Very sad news. It's always heart breaking when these decisions have to be made. Spend the weekend giving Pepe lots of love and kisses. He'll go on knowing how much he was loved, and you should be commended for taking such good care of him.

Thanks Tybee, we had to wait until we were sure he is just getting worse and there was really no hope for Pepe and his doctor confirms this.

Tonight Pepe came out with us for a night walk (he walks with difficulty) and sat at an outdoor cafe with our AA friends and he seems better. Maybe we should cancel Monday.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes.

In my opinion, Pepe will let you know when it's time. Don't have him put down when he is not in a bad way all the time. If he is not in constant pain then I would say wait until he lets you know he can't take it any longer. Trust me, you'll know.

I agree with Tybee -- Pepe will let you know when he's too tired & doesn't want to continue the effort.

Very sorry, Erna -- I know how hard it is, but Pepe is lucky to have you taking such good care of him that you love him enough to handle this. Of course, you have been lucky too, as I'm sure you realize. Best tp both of you.

Thanks to Tybee and all, we now believe that we must cancel Monday, giving them 24 hours notice. We will just say we are 'postponing' it. We hope the vet and the Auschwitz don't get angry and demand payment for cancellatia. From what we can see Pepe is not in any pain at all. The vets says he is in pain but that dogs don't show it. We don't buy that.
This morning Pepe ate a big breakfast, walked outside(slowly and with some difficulty but walking all the way just the same) and did peepee and 2 good poopoos and is now having his mid-morning snooze here in the living room behind us.

BTW, We prayed for directia on this this morning and Tybee gave us the answer. As Babs said on recent video tour of her FUNNY GIRL dressing room at the Winter Garden Theater "Prayers get answered".

Canceling the procedure should be no problem. It's just one injection and that's it. They usually do the injection in a vein in the leg and the animal goes to sleep almost immediately and in just a few seconds it's over. It's not like they have to set up an operating room. When I had to have my pup put down I just walked into the vet unannounced and told them I felt the time had come. His long term vet took a look at him and agreed. A vet tech prepared the hypodermic and it was all over very quickly.

I can't imagine they do it any differently in Spain.

Thanks Tybee, but she also made an appointment for our taking Pepe right afterwards to the Auschwitz in another part of town, we hope there is no problem with cancelling that.

She now thinks it is cancer yet no biopsy has been done and the tumors that appeared on his face a week ago, supposedly from the cancer spreading, seem to have dried up. Still his left eye seems to have been destroyed by something. Now he is napping peacefully as usual at this time of day.

If they try to charge you for canceling, especially because you want to give Pepe as much life as is reasonably possible, I'd tell them to stick it and find myself another vet when the time does come. There are times when compassion has to take precedence over business, and this is one of those times.

Dearest Erna, No matter what happens with Pepe, when he can't take it anymore you will know. No matter what happens take comfort that you always did what was best for him. Canceling Monday, shows you know Pepe isn't ready to leave you yet. You will always have a gut feeling on what is right for Pepe. I send prayers in the direction of your own precious citizen. Keep us posted, we all know no matter what, Pepe will live a long healthy life. With plenty of food, and love. ♥

Bless you r16 for your love of precious little citizens. We cancelled it and this morning Pepe ate his usual big breakfast, today of pieces of fresh cooked chicken breast, half an apple and the rest his usual organic expensive dog kibble. He had a good walk, walking much better! and did his 'business'. We then gave him his quick weekly rinse in the shower and he then elder-paced around the apartment waiting for his 'After bath' reward of a dog biscuit.
Perhaps whatever it is (was?) has gone into remissia.

I don't want to crush your hopes, but you need to be prepared. If it really is cancer I'm sure it works the same way in dogs as it does in humans if it becomes terminal. I've been down that road too many times. He will have good days and bad days. At times his good days may be so good that you think it's gone. Only to take a drastic turn another day. It's when the good days are gone forever and he only has bad days you'll want to end his suffering.

Have you considered taking Pepe to another vet for a 2nd opinion? Perhaps there is some form of medication that may slow down the progression and offer him a bit more life to enjoy. I've been amazed before how different doctors know different things.

How is Señor Pepe doing?

Pepe seems to be doing rather well. Still has a tremendous appetite and we are giving him good fresh chicken and beefsteak nearly every meal, with his regular kibble and fresh apples which he loves. He is walking more or less OK and seems pain-free. Maybe it was just a very severe infectia in the nasal cavity and the daily antibiotics seem to be working. Thanks Tybee.

I'm very glad you didn't heed the vet's recommendation to have him put down on Monday. He may have more life left in him than anyone ever expected.
