Dear Miss Manners

So this is the basis for this woman's life? She thinks she's Lady Bunny? I could just puke.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am an American married to an Englishman who is a college professor, and who has
lived in this country for about 35 years. I will be moving with him to England when we retire.

My husband, who is from a lower middle-class background like myself, has been knighted! He still answers his office phone as “Pete Smith.” He never corrects people in the way they address him. The name on his business cards is “Peter Smith, Ph.D.,” plus a string of other letters including his knighthood, but of course most Americans can’t make heads or tails of that.

I admire his modesty, yet, perversely, I want to be “Lady Smith.” Will Miss Manners allow me to get away with this? If so, how?

Uh, Miss Manners doesn't give a shit. You sound like a needy drag queen.

Silly bitch. :lol

She reminds me of Ben Kingsley who is said to have a major meltdown if people don't address him as Sir Ben Kingsley. Note to Ben: Last time anyone checked your poop does not come out in plastic bags so don't get about your raising.

Yes, well probably not worth posting that but I just thought how superficial and self absorbed someone would be...... concerned about a stupid title bestowed and not earned. I understand maybe a doctor that gets fussy or military title because they worked for it. She didn't.

BTW, does Lady Elton of John liked to be addressed that way too? :lol

I've never heard of Elton being a stickler for the "Sir". I think he'd be happier with "Lady Elton" or "Dame Elton". :eek :lol But I digress.

People can be so silly & childish about titles. Several years ago there was some sort of Senate hearing going on that made the news. This panel of Senators was questioning some big law enforcement muckety-muck. One of the senators was a woman (can't remember her name, but she was just a one termer because she was an idiot). The law enforcement guy referred to her as "Mrs." at one point and she had a minor meltdown. She admonished him to refer to her as "Senator" because she had worked damn hard for that title. I remember thinking, you silly cow. Even the male senators sitting on either side of her had looks on their faces of "good God who gives a crap - get on with it so we can go home".

Barbara Boxer, US Senator from California, pulled that once in a Senate hearing. Her rationale was that she worked hard to achieve that status and deserved to be addressed with respect.

It wasn't so much her feelings but rather the tone she used to express them and to demean the guy.
