Mae was also very smart.

Although she made only a few movies she started investing in LA commercial property in the 1930s and at her death was worth what would in 2017 dollars be about $100 million.

She seems so masculine there. Are we sure she wasn't the precursor for Caitlyn Jenner? Did she have sex with men or just talk about it a lot. And Cary Grant wouldn't apply.

During my little stint in L.A. in the late 70's/early 80's I had a good friend who lived not far from her apartment building. As I drove by I always noticed an apartment on the top floor that had these garish purple drapes which my friend informed me was Mae's apartment & that she owned the whole building.

There's an itty bitty 1/br apartment for rent in the building currently for $2350/month (utilities included).

They must not have counted the lobby level as a floor. Wikipedia says she moved in when the building was constructed in 1030 by Paramount Studios and lived there until she died 50 years later.

Years ago I read an article some woman wrote about doing an interview with Mae at the apartment near the end of her life. She said it was obvious not one stitch had been changed or anything new bought for the place since she moved in. All the furniture was tattered and dirty and bath towels had been draped over the arms of most chairs and sofas. And the smell of moth balls as she walked into the apartment would make your head snap back.

Mae also had a beach house in Santa Monica, right on the sand almost next to Louis B Mayer's house. We remember in the summer of 1980 we were living in Santa Monica Canyon. Mae had had the bad stroke and was convalescing at the beach house. We walked on the beach one night in front of what we were told was her house and could see a nurse walking about upstairs in what looked like a bedroom so we presumed that was Mae's bedroom. She perspired 4 months later at the Ravenswood. We were renting a nice little garage apartment on East Rustic Road from two hot numbers, one of whom is now a judge in LA

The judge's glory days (or is that gloryhole days :lol ) are well over. At least he still has his hair.

Apparently your former landlord is the judge who sentenced Dr. Conrad Murray (the quack who shot Michael Jackson up with the dose that killed him) to prison.

I'm almost afraid to ask but why were you evicted? Or was this when you were taking pills, drinking, and basically almost homeless? Or did he get jealous or angry at the amount of men who would visit you all the time?

Do you think she ever met Peggy Lee?

I read at Wikipedia that before Mae bought the Ravenswood she had a black lover, a boxer named William "Gorilla" Jones whom the management of the building refused to allow on the premises due to his race, so Mae bought the building so he could come in.

At that time we were in our late teens and a student at Santa Monica College. Thanks to AA we were free of boozette and pills and we no longer believed that we were Judy Garland, but we had a row with a nieghbor over a barking dog and that was the reason that Michael ordered us to leave. Then we moved into a building, right at the beach at the mouth of Santa Monica Canyon, where we enjoyed a FEAST of sizemeat(surfers from the beach across the road) such as we never knew existed!

We remember one super-sizemeat student(we still have Polaroids we took of the member) who said that he agreed to fuck fish ONLY if they would write his term papers for him!
