An Interesting Local Find

A few days ago I had a plumber out to do a job. We were talking about local history and he told me there was a Revolutionary War era cemetery not 1/2 mile from here that I might find interesting if I had not already seen it. It's off the main road on a dirt road that goes way back into the woods. I knew I had to see it so I went today. Beautiful old cemetery dating back to the 18th century and still being used as there was a freshly installed grave along with several graves from the late 1700's.

I love finding places like this hidden away in the middle of nowhere

This person died in 1783. Based on what I could make out of the writing on the grave I he was a soldier during the war. I have to assume he died in battle since he died while the War Of Independence was still being fought.

We love going to old cemeteries and always notice that 200 years ago folks were living well into their 80s and 90s without 'modern health care'.

Oh yes, I love old cemeteries. My favorite is in the foggy, hippie dippie town of Bolinas California.

Your pix are great. Thx.

You're welcome.

If the people whining about all the confederate monuments had been with me they may have perspired or have run for the nearest safe space. On the other side of the cemetery is a large granite monument that says "THIS MONUMENT IS A MEMORIAL TO THE NEGRO SLAVES WHO SERVED THE BLANKENSHIP FAMILY" and a listing of about 10 members of the family. Behind it are several small plain granite blocks about 5"x10" placed haphazardly in a large section of the cemetery. There was no writing on them at all. I think they may be the grave markers of the slaves.

The Bolinas Cemetery looks like it would be great fun to scout out.

A lovely, old well-kept graveyard, thanks for sharing. I live in rural area, there are many family plots in fields that have been abandoned, choked with vines & weeds, so sad...

You're welcome. I think one of the strangest graveyards I've ever seen is this one. As you're driving into or out of Atlanta on the south side as you get to the Cleveland Ave. bridge there is a graveyard literally inside the on ramp from Cleveland Ave. onto I75. It is a slave cemetery that had been almost obliterated by the business that was located on that spot long ago. They had removed most of the headstones. When they were constructing the freeway the DOT found the old cemetery and put in new headstones and a monument.

I always found this cemetery in Waialai Kahala humorous. A unkept mess BUT notice the mail box on the no trespassing pole.

Apparently graveyards are a favorite place for some weirdos to go and do the nasty late at night.
