I was up at 5am this morning moving furniture off the deck. The winds really picked up over night and I was awakened at 3:30am by something hitting the side of the house . It was a deck chair a wind gust was slamming around. It's like November. Cold wind, heavily overcast sky. Just my kind of weather. I've taken this time to open some windows all over the house to get some good fresh air circulating after being closed up with the A/C going for months.

As of this morning's forecast they're calling for sustained winds here of 45-65 mph. I think we can deal with that. And Lord knows we desperately need the rain.

#3 are you in a safe spot? The winds are supposed to get bad for you late tonight and in the early morning hours tomorrow.

We guess that a hurricane is the least of our worries living here a 3 minute walk from something about as turbulent as a bathtub.

But it must be exciting living in a hurricane area.

I hope #3/6 fared OK overnight. The worst of the storm has passed over his area this morning. I imagine he probably has no power at this point. It's howling like mad here right now. The heavy duty stuff doesn't arrive for another couple of hours and is forecast to last for about 12 hours. Power is out for over 100,000 in SW Georgia at this point.

Since 11am all hell has broken loose here. The whole house is shaking from the wind coming from the south hitting the full expanse of back side of the house. Most of our storms come in from the west. The power went out 2 hours ago & I'm operating on batteries (thank goodness I had brains enough to invest in a UPS to keep the modem going). Major tree damage with debris everywhere. The street is completely covered in debris and unpassable. Large explosion heard about an hour ago I assume it was a transformer blowing up. I don't even want to imagine what folks who stayed along the Gulf coast went through last night.

Thanks. Just to show people who don't live in areas that get big storms exactly how a big one can ravage your property in just a few hours.

This was my back yard on Saturday

It will recover, at least most of those beautiful trees were saved!

There are some significant losses unfortunately that will never recover. On the other side of the property was a huge old live oak. It was completely uprooted and the whole thing just toppled over with the root ball out of the ground. Tomorrow hopefully things will have dried out enough so I can get back there to properly survey the full damage. It will probably take weeks to schedule a bucket truck to get out here to get these trees removed. The local power company told me on the phone the damage in the county is extensive.

Well, I don't mean to sound harsh, but trees grow back. I'm glad you are A-OK.

And even though the news media over hyped this, I'm happy they were wrong and that the loss of life was small. That Barbado (sic) island is who I really feel bad for. Those folks will endure hardship for months and years.

And since this is anon, I hate myself for feeling glee that Richard Branson, the Virgin Air guy's house was destroyed. Jealousy is such an underrated emotion!

They say Disney is price gouging. I find it funny that regular apple juice is more than organic.

Thanks #15! The power came back on about 15 minutes ago - PRAISE JEEBUS. I was really dreading nightfall. But now the internet is out and trying to read things on a smartphone with my old eyes is hell.

Oh well it could be much worse. One of those trees could have come down on the house. So all in all it will just be a momentary inconvenience.

Disney should be ashamed.

Glad you are okay Tybee!

Those prices actually seem pretty good for Disney. You can get the same in any NYC Duane Reade on a good day for a similar price. I would have thought Disney had tourist trap prices even before the storm.

PRAISE THE GODDESS I HAVE INTERNET AGAIN!!

Been working in the yard all day. I think I may die before nightfall. :lol

Looks like I'll have to live with the downed trees for a few weeks. The tree cutter pros in the area all have tremendous backlogs. :crybaby

Don't you have any lezzie neighbors? They always have a collection of chain saws decorating their living rooms! :eek

I have exactly 2 neighbors down here. The neighbors across the road are wonderful. He's a retired Newark, NJ. fireman and she's a commercial orchid grower. They're both Portuguese and we hit it off grandly when they found out I was part Portuguese. I pay them to take care of the place during the fall & winter when I'm not here. The other neighbor is a Pakistani man and his wife. He owns a chain of convenience stores all over the area and I've never met either of them and am not interested in doing so. Apparently they got mad that I bought the property out from under them (they wanted it for rental property). They've passed right by me in their car on more than one occasion when I was out at the mailbox and refuse to even turn their heads to wave hello as everyone down here does, whether they know you or not. So fuck 'em. Their house is far enough away I don't have to have anything to do with them. And that suits me just fine.

Down here all the dykes congregate at the local Walmart on Friday afternoons. Fridays there is unofficially known as "dyke day". You've never seen so many ancient cane faces in your freaking life in one place. I've noticed several of the female employees in that store are tres butch.

The grounds have been cleared of all the loose debris. They came yesterday to remove everything that was piled 6 feet high 70 feet across the front of the property at the roadside. it took 2 huge trucks with grabber arms to remove it all. The fallen trees are still where they landed. I'm "on the list" they say. I was told that it would most likely be a minimum of 2 weeks as every tree trimmer in this part of the state has been inundated with work. I can't imagine how many trips or trucks it'll take to remove the trees.

if you had a fireplace, you could put some of those larger branches to good use

oh, and my back yard is still a mess; no time to get to it, just yet

I didn't lose any trees, but their are a lot of large broken limbs all over

You're right. When I bought this place and had the extensions added on the contractor talked me out of having a fireplace installed claiming most people who do end up regretting it. Now I'm regretting it alright. I'm regretting not having one put in.
