What percentage of "sufferers" of this affliction are actually suffering from it, and what percentage are just fraus seeking attention and/or drugs?

A surprisingly large percentage of "sinus headaches" and even sinus infections are actually migraines. The study mentioned on WebMD says 90% of sinus infections are really migraines.

That said, my experience is that doctors will tell patients they don't have sinus infections even when they do, just to try to get the patient to get over the infection on their own without antibiotics. I once filed paperwork for a lady whose left ethmoid was so clogged it pushed her eye a little out of its socket, and her idiot doctor had tried to get her to just wait it out. She ended up in the hospital for two weeks because he told her it was just a migraine.
