Three girls who went missing a decade ago have been found alive after they were kept in the dungeon of a Cleveland, Ohio home. Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus were found alive on Monday inside a house on 2200 block of Seymour Avenue near West 25th Street alongside a third woman identified as Michelle Knight. A 52-year-old man named Ariel Castro has been arrested and is in police custody in connection to the case. When the neighbor helped Berry out of the house, she was holding a young child, and there were reportedly other children in the home but it is unclear what their relationship is to the children. 'Help me I'm Amanda Berry...I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for ten years and I'm here. I'm free now,' Berry is heard saying in the call to police that has been publicly released. 'I need them now before he gets back!' she said in the frantic phone call to 911, going on to identify her captor as Ariel Castro, a 52-year-old Hispanic man. Castro has lived in the house since 1992 and he was arrested for domestic violence in 1993. Berry disappeared on April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday, and a year later then-14-year-old DeJesus went missing on April 2, 2004. On Monday evening, DeJesus' cousin Sylvia Colon spoke to CNN, saying that the missing girl's mother Nancy Ruiz confirmed to relatives that Gina is alive and well in hospital. 'What a phenomenal mother's Day gift this is,' Ms Colon told the station. Berry went missing shortly after she called her sister to say that she was getting a ride home from her job at Burger King. DeJesus went missing on her way home from school. Michelle Knight went missing in 2000 at the age of 20-years-old. They were found when a neighbor saw a woman, later identified as Amanda, screaming from inside a home in West Cleveland. 'I heard screaming, I'm eating my McDonalds, I come outside and I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of the house and I go on the porch and she says "Help me get out! I've been in here a long time,"' neighbor Charles Ramsey told local News Net 5. 'I go on the porch and she said "Help me get out. I’ve been here a long time." I figure it was domestic violence dispute.' 'She comes out with a little girl and says ‘Call 911, my name is Amanda Berry’... When she told me, it didn’t register.' 'It didn't register until I got on the phone with 911 and I said "I'm calling 911 for Amanda Berry- I thought this girl is dead." 'That girl Amanda told the police "I ain't the only one, there are some more girls up inside that house" so they went.' The women were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, as they are reportedly suffering from severe dehydration and slightly malnourished but alive. Charles Ramsey said that he was shocked about the discovery because the man who owns the home- who is thought to be the kidnapper- did not stay hidden from those around him. 'I've been here a year. I barbeque with this dude, we eat ribs and what not and listen to salsa music. Not a clue that that girl was in that house or that anyone else was in there with,' Charles said of Castro. Local news reporters told CNN that Castro is said to have worked as a bus driver for the Cleveland Metropolitan schools, though it is unclear whether that was the case when the women were kidnapped. Crowds of Cleveland residents gathered at the police station and cheered as squad cars pulled into the station Monday night, and a similar crowd gathered outside of the hospital. The disappearances of Amanda and Gina captured the attention of the entire city for the past decade, as their relatives have continually held vigils and kept the story alive in the local press. Amanda's mother Louwanna Miller, died in March 2006 after the years of her daughter's disappearance had taken a toll on her deteriorating health. Local news reports said that she 'died of a broken heart'. Amanda's sister has continued to keep the case in the public's attention since their mother died, and she has worked closely with the DeJesus family. Earlier in the case, DeJesus' mother Nancy Ruiz raised the alarm that her daughter was the victim of human trafficking. 'I always said it from the beginning; she was sold to the highest bidder,' Ms Ruiz said in April 2012. Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson was the first public official to speak out about the case, confirming the identities of the three women. 'I am thankful that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight have been found alive. We have many unanswered questions regarding this case and the investigation will be ongoing. Again, I am thankful that these three young ladies are found and alive,' he said. Amanda Berry's mother, Louwanna Miller, died thinking that her daughter had preceded her in death after Sylvia Brown told her so on the Montel Williams show in 2003. |

Incredible news about these 3 women. I'm betting that as more and more info comes out the Cleveland police are going to end up looking really bad. One neighbor claims she called the police a few years back when she saw one of the men leading 3 naked women around in the back yard on all fours, naked. When the cops came she said they knocked on the door and when no one answered they just left. The last time I saw Sylvia Brown on TV she looked like she was on her last leg. She was Montel's last gasp at trying to keep a career in the chat show media going. I think she's what did him in. These days the only job he can come up with is hawking yet another well known scam on TV, payday loans. Edited by Tybee, May 7 2013, 11:23 PM.

ITA about the cops, they are saying they didn't receive any calls from the neighbors. This story is just going to get so much worse, what those young women went through I can't even imagine. I'm worried about Michele, they haven't got a picture of her yet and I find that strange. How Montel got caught up with Sylvia Brown beats me. Surely he had better sense than to believe her crap, I just cringe thinking of her, picking her nose with those long nails. Gads. |

Montel is just a big a fraud as she is: He's a pimp to a scam. When she told a woman, "Your husband is under water." The woman replied, "But he died in the World Trade Center!" And Montel covered for Sylvia: "don't you mean his lungs are full of water from the fire fighters who tried to rescue on 9 11?" |

I've read that the cops in Cleveland are already looking at the fact that the dispatcher who took the call from Berry did not follow protocol and stay on the line with her until help arrived. Just listening to that audio it was obvious he couldn't get her off the phone quick enough. Of course they're officially saying the dispatcher followed the rules, but they're looking into retraining so that the dispatchers know to stay on the line until help arrives. Uh, Cleveland has had cops for a long time. I would think a competent police force would have covered that in their training long ago. |

When Montel turned his chat show into a daily Sylvia Browne fraud fest I knew he was on his last leg. He'd lost most of the viewers when he was trying to do a real chat show, so he started pandering to the people who loons who actually believe Sylvia Browne's pronouncements are real. I just did a search for Sylvia Browne's website. That red circle next to her listing shows at some point it was listed as a known malware site. If her webmaster has corrected the problem he or she hasn't bothered to advise the various website malware checking concerns so they can take her off the list. I'm betting her site still has little gifts for all the visitors. ![]() |

Michele is back in hospital, her brother and sister said she has the mind of a child. Brother and sister have been estranged from the mother for years. Brother said he didn't know she was missing until all of this. Michele doesn't want to talk to her mother. |

Apparently they're only going to charge Ariel in this case. The other 2 brothers apparently had nothing to do with it. They were just with Ariel when the cops arrested him so they hauled them in too. Looks like one more huge Cleveland PD foul up. A Cleveland man arrested after three women missing for a decade were found alive at his run-down home was charged Wednesday with kidnapping and raping them. Prosecutors brought no charges against his brothers, saying there was no evidence they had any part in the crime. Ariel Castro, 52, was charged with four counts of kidnapping — covering all three captives and the daughter born to one of them while she was held — and three counts of rape against the three women. The former school bus driver owns the peeling home where the women were rescued on Monday, after one of them broke through a screen door while Castro apparently was away. At a news conference, authorities gave few details on the women's ordeal. But police said earlier in the day that they were apparently bound with ropes and chains, and a city councilman briefed on the case, Brian Cummins, said that they were subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse and suffered miscarriages. "We know that the victims have confirmed miscarriages, but with who, how many and what conditions we don't know," Cummins said. He added: "It sounds pretty gruesome." Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said the women could remember being outside only twice during their entire time in captivity. "We were told they left the house and went into the garage in disguise," he said. And their first opportunity to escape didn't come until Monday, he said. The women were not kept in the same room, but knew they were not alone, he said. He also said a paternity test on Castro was being done to establish who fathered the now 6-year-old child of captive Amanda Berry. Castro was in custody and couldn't be reached for comment. A brother-in-law has said the family was "shocked" after hearing about the women at the home. Castro's brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, were also arrested after the women were rescued, but there was no evidence they had any part in the crime, Cleveland Prosecutor Victor Perez said. Earlier in the day, Berry and former captive Gina DeJesus were welcomed home by jubilant crowds of loved ones and neighbors with balloons and banners Wednesday. Family members protectively took them inside, past hundreds of reporters and onlookers. Neither woman spoke, and their families pleaded for patience and time alone. "Give us time and privacy to heal," said Sandra Ruiz, DeJesus' aunt. Ruiz thanked police for rescuing the women and urged the public not to retaliate against the suspects or their families. The third captive, Michelle Knight, 32, was reported in good condition at Metro Health Medical Center, which a day earlier had reported that all three victims had been released. There was no immediate explanation from the hospital. The Associated Press does not usually identify people who may be victims of sexual assault, but the names of the women were widely circulated by their families, friends and law enforcement authorities for years during their disappearance. In a development that astonished and exhilarated much of Cleveland, the three women were rescued after Berry, 27, broke through a screen door at the Castro house and told a 911 dispatcher: "Help me. I'm Amanda Berry. I've been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now." Law enforcement officials left many questions unanswered, including how the women were taken captive. Neighbors said that Ariel Castro took part in the search for one of the missing women, helped pass out fliers, performed music at a fundraiser for her and attended a candlelight vigil, where her comforted her mother. As recently as 2005, Castro was accused of repeated acts of violence against his children's mother. On NBC's "Today" show, Police Chief Michael McGrath said he was "absolutely" sure police did everything they could to find the women over the years. He disputed claims by neighbors that officers had been called to the house before for suspicious circumstances. "We have no record of those calls coming in over the past 10 years," McGrath said. On Tuesday, some neighbors said that they had told police years ago about hearing pounding on the doors of the home and seeing a naked woman crawling in the yard. DeJesus, who disappeared in 2004 and is in her early 20s, arrived home in the afternoon Wednesday to chants of "Gina! Gina!" Wearing a bright yellow hooded sweatshirt, she was led through the crowd and into the house by a woman who put her arm around the young woman's shoulders and held her tight. Her father pumped his fist after arriving home with his daughter, and he urged people across the country to watch over the children in their neighborhoods — including other people's kids. "Too many kids these days come up missing, and we always ask this question: How come I didn't see what happened to that kid? Why? Because we chose not to," he said Berry arrived at her sister's home, which was similarly festooned with dozens of colorful balloons and signs, one reading "We Never Lost Hope Mandy." Hundreds cheered wildly but weren't able to get a glimpse of Berry as she went in through the back. A 2005 domestic-violence filing in Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court accused Ariel Castro of twice breaking the nose of his children's mother, knocking out a tooth, dislocating each shoulder and threatening to kill her and her daughters three or four times in a year. The filing for a protective order by Grimilda Figueroa also said that Castro frequently abducted her daughters and kept them from her. In 1993, Castro was arrested on a domestic-violence charge and spent three days in jail before he was released on bail. A grand jury did not return an indictment against him, according to court documents, which don't detail the allegations. It was unclear who brought the charge. Police said Castro was also questioned about the 2007 disappearance of 14-year-old Ashley Summers, who vanished near the Castro house. But Tomba said there was no new information linking that case to Castro. "We're hoping for our miracle, too," said Ashley's aunt, Debra Summers. http://www.ajc.com/ap/ap/crime/police-build-case-against-3-brothers-in-cleveland/nXkmT/ |

I'm with one of the lawyer on CNN that said an independent investigator needs to be brought in. The charges are way to few, Ariel is going plead guilty to the charges, no trial, like a sweep under the rug. Remember this is Cleveland where what was it, four years ago, neighbors in another area complained about a stench in their neighborhood. The house was next to a meat plant and officers said the smell was from the plant. Come to find out there were 11 bodies in his yard, many think the cops didn't take their complaints serious because the missing women were drug addicts and prostitutes. |

Smoking Gun is reporting that Charles Ramsey went to prison for domestic violence on his wife. What he did can be compared with the movie Crash, people can be different on different days. Piers Morgan had a different guy that spoke Spanish that said he was the one the helped Amanda get out. What a mess. |

Amanda or Gina will hopefully clear it up later. From reading comments online it sounds like Angel Cordero was the one who kicked down the door, and Ramsey arrived quite a bit later. I hate to say it, but it sounds like some people in the media thought Ramsey was more, er, flamboyant and focused on him rather than get a translator and talk to Cordero. |

Ariel's daughter is in prison for slitting her own baby's throat (the baby survived). Sounds like the apple didn't fall far from the tree. (CNN) -- The daughter of Ariel Castro, the primary suspect in the abduction of three women found alive this week, is serving a 25-year sentence in an Indiana prison for the attempted murder of her baby six years ago. Emily Castro was sentenced to 30 years with five years suspended. A judge found Castro guilty but mentally ill of cutting her 11-month-old daughter four times on the neck in April 2007. An appeal, filed in late 2008, was denied by an Indiana court. Legal documents state that on April 4, 2007, Castro, 19 at the time, was upset that her boyfriend -- the baby's father -- had moved out of the family's home in Fort Wayne. She took the baby into a garage and cut her neck four times with a knife. Castro also cut her own neck and wrists. Police were summoned to the house by a passerby who came upon Castro's mother carrying the baby and running from the home. Officers found Castro covered in mud, water and blood. Castro told paramedics she had tried to drown herself in a creek, according to an appeals court decision document. According to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, the defense argued at trial that Castro had suffered from mental depression and became paranoid, thinking her family was trying to kill her and the baby. The judge found that Castro still had the ability to know right from wrong. She and her brother Anthony spoke at her sentencing hearing, the Journal Gazette reported. "I don't know how this happened," said Castro. "I want you to know I am a very good mom." Anthony Castro said his sister was not an animal. The family had dealt with his sister's illness every day, he added. http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/08/studentnews/ohio-castro-daughter/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 |
