What does this sudden backlash against gays worldwide mean? In Russia, they are being stripped of all humanity, legally. We've all been hearing about that. But there's also Neo-Nazis in Russia torturing gay youth. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/26/russian-nazi-torture-gay-teens_n_3658636.html Zimbabwe threatening to behead gays. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/26/mugabe-zimbabwe-behead-gays_n_3659454.html Hate groups in Belize http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/25/anti-gay-belize_n_3653609.html Teen chopped and stabbed to death in Jamaica http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/25/dwayne-jones-cross-dressing-jamaican-stabbed_n_3652665.html Gay pride in Montenegro turns violent http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/24/montenegro-gay-pride-_n_3643375.html What is this worldwide backlash for? OUR Supreme Court rulings? What else would it be? |

Personally I don't think there's an increase at all. I think the media has decided to ratchet up their coverage of violence against gays that has been going on in these various places for many years. The media is making it seem like things have changed because otherwise there would be little rationale for their increased coverage. Until the recent Supreme Court ruling gays haven't provided much fodder for the media in a good long while.

I agree with Tybee that this has been going on a long time. I don't think most of these people give a shit about the U.S. Supreme Court. If you want to find a source of anti-gay violence, look to the churches, both Christian and Muslim. That is where the evil lies. Plus, dictators need a scapegoat/common-enemy. George Bush and Obama have "terrorists," Hitler had the Jews, the USSR had Capitalist Imperialists, and Iran has America. If you have an enemy, you're less likely to pay attention to the bad shit being done by your side. |

I operate on the premise that these days if it's reported on TV (by the news or anyone else) there's most likely a spin that has been added to it to make it more attention grabbing to the viewers. |

The news is a product, just like any other. |

First you need to ask the public in these various places what they perceive when they hear the equivalent of the term "gay" in their language. Has the image that comes to mind changed over time? What's called "gay" in English has been given increased visibility (and I'd argue that the visibility is a horrible misrepresentation of reality) in the past 15 years or so, with much of it coming in the last 5. |

People don't just suddenly start hating gay people. Homophobes and those who simply don't like us are raised, not born. So IMO for that reason alone I think it is doubtful that there has been any sudden increase in anti gay sentiment. The Russian government has always been virulently anti gay. And many of the Caribbean islands & Latin American countries are long known to harbor strong anti gay feelings among the indigenous people (thanks mainly to the Catholicism, Santeria, Voodoo, and other weird religions they practice). I believe anywhere you have a large population of poorly educated people or people who have limited access to ideologies outside their own immediate environment you find more anti gay sentiment. Poorly educated people are more apt to believe whatever sounds best to them, not what is true or logical. Unfortunately people in that situation many times want to hate as it's one of the few things that gives them any sense of power, or the sense there are others they are better than. For Zimbabwe, Belize, and Jamaica, British Colonialism played a role. Colonialists made homosexuality a crime. The list of places where gays are hated is almost as long as the list of places once colonized by the British - countries that inherited their legal systems from British common law are far more likely to have anti-gay laws. I don't have anything for Russia and Montenegro, but there will always be leaders (government or church or what have you) who seek to control the majority by making the minority a target. It's just a form of political economics. A mean, cruel, and usually violent form of political economics, but there it is. |

Until we have personally witnessed these 'incidents' we do not believe them. In our day sisters behaved like ladies, kept all their hairpins in place, took no drugs and enjoyed copious amounts of leche! |
