The unscripted comedy drew an record 11.8 million viewers during Wednesday's one-hour premiere. What is it about? I thought Duck Dynasty was a show about Scrooge McDuck.

It's just another overly scripted reality show. Most everything is totally contrived.

The Robertson's business, Duck Commander, makes merchandise for hunting enthusiasts. Their show is one part business, one part family, and all parts popular

Nuptials: The record setting premier featured Kay and Phil Robertson renewing their vows after 48 years

The A&E series Duck Dynasty made a big splash Wednesday when it kicked off its fourth season with the highest ratings for any cable reality show in history.

The show that follows the Robertsons—a West Monroe, Louisiana brood of duck hunters who’ve become filthy rich from a business selling duck calls—who drew an unbelievable 11.8 million viewers on Wednesday.

And they’re probably getting filthier. The record ratings come after A&E gave in to the off-beat clan’s demands for higher pay and amidst the growing popularity of the Duck Commander brand merchandise that made them rich in the first place.

It's a phenomenon even Jase Robertson, one of the family's bearded second generation, thought he'd never see.

‘My dad (Phil) echoed that,’ he told USA Today. ‘I think he said something along the lines of “A redneck family, they're not going to run that.”’

The blockbuster premier on Wednesday placed the long-bearded Robertson boys ahead of another famously hirsute cable star. Duck Dynasty’s 11.8 million viewers beat out the wildly popular conclusion of History’s The Bible, which portrayed the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, by around 100,000 viewers.

And the family has several literary offerings, to boot.

The patriarch Phil published Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander, the family has a group-authored book called The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty, and even the erstwhile uncle of the bayou brood has published a book, Si-cology 1: Tales and Wisdom from Duck Dynasty's Favorite Uncle.

There are also t-shirts, DVD collections, and a cookbook by Phil’s wife Kay.

In spite their wild financial success and continued popularity, Jase Robertson says they’re keeping their bearded heads on straight as best they can.

‘It didn't really taint the important things,’ he said. ‘Our faith and our family and our perspective on life.’
