Sixty. Sixty-one. Sixty-two. Fellsing continued to count as he watched the stretch of grasslands before him. The setting sun cast the tree's long shadow over Fellsing's own, but the burning campfire worked against it. It was much the same as his barriers. The sun was like Fellsing, generating a baseline force which the campfire, his enemy, attempted to overpower. Gradually, as the sun continued to set, the campfire would dominate. It was only a matter of time. One hundred twenty. One hundred twenty-one. One hundred twenty-two. The goats started bleating to one another for no obvious reason. He held out his hand, encouraging the one he rode to their campsite to approach. The large animal approached and took a seat as it sniffed his hand. Though he was the smallest of the three goats, he was still significantly taller than Fellsing; getting onto the goat's back on the first attempt was really just a fluke. Fellsing slid his hand through the goat's thick, matted fur with a smile. One hundred eighty. One hundred eighty-one. One hundred eighty-two. The goat studied Fellsing's hand in wonder. It didn't surprise Fellsing that the animal could see the green glow around his body. After all, wild animals and even insects also possessed auras - though theirs were certainly smaller than his. The goat tried to eat the glowing light with a curious bleat. Four minutes. Four and a half minutes. The green glow around his body faded just shy of five minutes, but Fellsing supposed he might've counted a little too slow. It was better to underestimate his abilities than to overestimate and get stabbed with the full force of an enemy's pike someday. Now that he knew the limits of its duration, it was time to test the spell's power. Fellsing considered using Crius as a test subject. After all, he wouldn't be hurt unless the barrier failed... Since he intended to test its durability, however, he decided against it and cast another barrier over his own body. Then, with a firm grip, he took his dagger into one hand. First, a light blow to the opposing shoulder. His swing was cut short by the force of the green energy field. The dagger just stopped in mid-air. Fellsing tried again, this time stabbing at himself with full strength. His arm bounced back with almost the same amount of force when it struck the shield, but still, it held up. That was two hits so far, he noted. Fellsing brought his dagger back and swung again with lighter effort. This time, when the point of his dagger met the barrier, he felt it shatter. He halted the swing a moment too late and found himself with a shallow cut in his left shoulder. Though the nerves stung, he knew it wasn't serious. The goat wasn't so sure... With a loud bleat, it stared at the dripping blood. Fellsing was pleased that it didn't try to run. He returned his dagger to his pack and stood in the shadow of the dogwood. Five minutes. Two and a half swings. He would have to test it more thoroughly in the future, but for now, that sort of metric was good enough. He moved over to the other side of the fire so he could watch the goats and Crius as night descended upon the wilderness. The hours passed rapidly and without interruption. He gathered some fuel for the fire twice to keep it strong through the night, but surprisingly, nothing wandered into camp with an appetite for goats or a sleeping elf. Long after the crescent moon replaced the sun, Fellsing returned to Crius and shook him awake. "Good morning," he grunted. "Your turn." He had taken off about half an hour early, but probably not enough to make a difference. Fellsing positioned himself against the tree where he tested his barrier before. His goat was already fast asleep facing the campfire. (Fellsing's mana: 15/35 Fellsing's health: 23/25) |

crius stood up without complaining and after checkign the campfire he made sure not to look into the fire to not make his vission in this darkness any worse then it already was. usign the moon he tried to estimate the time and figured fellsing had been nice enough to do his complete shift, for as far as one could guess without the use of an actual time indicator. he took out a book he had kept hidden for anyone and started making notes on the magic he had felt when felsing had given him the shield. he had no idea what it had done but he knew the sentation he had felt put together with any earlyer encounters of magic would allow him to discover his own use for magic. after writting down what he wanted to write and rereading previeus entry's he thought were extremly important he closed the book and started trying to fit things together. he knew that with a bit of luck he would finaly be able to craft some magic for himself now, he just needed to concentrate and then figure out what the magic did. after much contemplating about he he reached the idea of forming his mana into a rune wich he could place anywhere he touched. as soon as he hd figured out the actual shape of the rune he knew it would be something unstable, any aura that interacted with it would make it detonate. and seeing how fellsing had only been asleep for a litle while after performing a decent guard shift he decided to wait a bit before letting something explode. content with what he had achieved he took the book again and wrote the rune and the creation process down, folowed by the note 'to be tested'. he closed the book and looked if fellsing was sound asleep before taking another book. the other book had strange writtings on, it was crius his personal book of secrets where he wrote down everything he knew was important even if he didn't understand it yet, like the tunnel funnel or whatever it was called. but because he was afraid what others could do with the book he had decided to create a unique code, it was basicly an old elfen dialect but the letters were from two alphabets mixed together. it could be cracked but he doubted many would want to try. the writting went slow because he had to concentrate on how to write it and make sure he kept an eye on his surroundings. but an hour after he had finished he started to wonder if they really had a need for guardduty's. then again he was rather a bit tired instead of mugged or killed. as soon as he could see that the horrizon was starting to get brighter crius stood up and made sure the goats weren't going to run. then he looked around till he found a bug and carefully placed a rune on the tip of his sword. then he backed away as far as he could and brought the tip of the sword as fast as he could towards the beetle. as crius had expected the rune exploded along with the beetle but his sword was left undamaged. he walked back towards felsing who should have awoken from the explosion and spoke; "it's still a bit dark but by the time we got ready to ride it will be light enough to not kill the mounts if we don't go to fast from the start. so get up we still have a logn way to go and i'd rather get there as fast as we can so we have as much as possible time to look for the darn thing." |

Fellsing jerked awake from his deep sleep to the sound of an explosion. His eyes quickly fell on Crius and the blade in his hand. He considered that it must have just been a noise in his dreams, but what made Crius bring out his sword? "Ready when you are," he yawned, rising to his feet. His knees cracked as he stood. The three goats all stared at Crius in silence much the way Fellsing had when he awakened. Surely there was more to it than his imagination... Nevertheless, he untied the rope binding the goats to the tree and pulled himself onto the goat's back. Once they were both mounted and the fire had been extinguished, they set out once again. Nature seemed to recycle the same dull scenery as they continued north. The passage of hours changed night to dawn and dawn to morning while Fellsing watched strange, colorful birds flying in V-formations over the wilds. Their travels were uneventful - that is, until they spotted thick, dark smoke on the horizon. After a few more minutes, they were close enough to identify its source as a burning village. The small settlement consisted of no more than ten buildings, and all of them were ablaze. Those who had escaped the buildings already stood with their families at a safe distance from the edge of town. The children sobbed openly while their mothers silently wept and attempted to console them. Their fathers gathered in one circle, shouting at one another. "It's probably better not to get involved," Fellsing muttered. "I bet some idiot just knocked over a lantern in the middle of the night." A woman came running from one of the flaming buildings on the town's perimeter and went straight to the men's group, clearly requesting their help. The first man to acknowledge her struck her across the face and immediately resumed bickering with the others. Fellsing snickered to himself at the woman's pain. She probably deserved it. |

crius ignored fellsings comments, it seem higly unlickely that someoen would accedently set fire to the complete vilage non the less as there was no fighting going on, the spine had a point on not getting involved. at least up until the women got slapped. he jumped of his goat with the reigns in his hands and walked up to the women, knelt down and reach her his hand. "can i help you?" |

The woman looked up from her despairing position on the ground and frantically swept her long bangs out of her eyes as she looked up at Crius and his riding goat. Fellsing fell into line beside him without dismounting. "M... My husband isn't out here... He must still be inside the house!" She pointed in urgency at the nearby building she'd been investigating a moment ago. "No one will help me. What should I do?" "If you value your life, do nothing," replied Fellsing. "If your husband values your life, do nothing. This guy here might be willing to investigate." He indicated Crius with a bony finger. "If so, Crius, leave your valuables with me so I don't have to dig them out of the ashes of the building." |

"yea yea, but you aren't gettign the gauntlet or the brouch, those stay at my side till i die. if he's in there i'll get him out." as he talked he took of his jacket, transfered the brouch from the jacket to his pants dropped his backpack and sword and walked to the building. he took a deep breath and ran in. as soon as he entered he wished he had asked the spine for some protection but it was too late now, if the man was inside he needed help and fast. he hurried as fast as he could through the livving room while looking around, as he passed some burning curtains they fell to the ground just behind him missing him by inches by the heath on his back told him he needed to hurry. as expected the man wasn't in the livving room wich made sense because then he would have made it outside in time. he entered a door and found himself in the bedroom. there wasn't many places where the man could be hidden so the room was quickly searched and again nobody was found. but as he tried to leave the room a closet fell partially blocking the door. crius had to gather his courage to jump over the closet and through the door because the closed was complely in flames because of the fall. he took a last look at the door ran and with his eyes closed he jumped through. it took alot of willpower to not scream as the flames licked his lower back.(-5hp) crius stood up nd hurried to the next room, another bedroom but this time it was the childrens bedroom, not only were there more objects that hindered his vieuw but he could no longer see that far because of the smoke gathering. he had to be carefull where he stepped because of the wooden toys, once he nearly slipt but the second one crius hadn't seen, to stop his fall he stretched his hand but he noticed to lat his hand was goign straight for a burning doll, as he landed he screamed as his hand was burned slightly.(-2hp) frustrated and slightly cursing he ran to the door that led to the basement. though smoke was still minimal there it was dark, the only light came from the flames that were comign through the floor of the living room. crius looked behidn every crate and storage place he could see, nowhere was the man to be found. he started headign back up the stair and then he noticed to late that the top of the stairs was burning so much it couldn't support crius his weight. the stairs fell and so did crius, he smakked his head against the wall behidn the stairs.(-4hp) the smakc made him lose his concentration over his breathing, breathign heavely and dizzy from the hit and smoke he slowly climbed out of the basement and made his way back to the outside of the building, there he allowed himself to collapse on the grass trying to get as much air back into his system as possible even though he knew he had taken in much smoke. from the ground he looked at the women and spoek softly. "nobody was inside." (normal damage: 5+2+4; smoke damage: 5) 14hp left |

"What?" Fellsing scoffed. "So you went in there for nothing?" The woman beside Fellsing knelt and touched two fingers gently to the wood elf's burnt hand. "No one? Thank you, but... Where could he..." As she spoke, one of the buildings toward the middle of the small village collapsed from critical damage to its supports, sending debris outward in all directions. Several of the women in the group wailed at the sound. "I told you, Gertrude!" shouted one of the men in their isolated circle. He held up a fist at the woman who enlisted Crius' aid. "That good-for-nothing husband of yours is long gone!" "What are you talking about?!" The woman whirled around as tears streamed down her cheeks. "It's his fault we're in this mess!" snapped another of the men, his body covered in soot. "Too bad he ain't in his house, burning to death. He's gonna be sorry when I find him!" Her pain renewed, Gertrude dropped to her hands and knees, dripping tears on the dry earth. Fellsing knelt with Crius and placed a hand on the wood elf's back. If he couldn't do something about the burns, they would have to wait here for him to get treatment. So much for getting to Eyr in a hurry. Green light like that used for his barrier emerged from his hand. Whereas the barrier provided a thick layer of energy, this was more of a focused beam. It swept over Crius' back, reversing some of the damage. When the light stopped, Fellsing grunted. Crius' injuries still seemed pretty serious. "Today's your lucky day, Crius," he muttered. "I learned a new trick, and I'm feeling generous." He swiped his hand over Crius' body again, sending the flow of his magic into the burns on his hands as well as what remained on his back. Fellsing kept some of his strength on reserve in case of an emergency. "You still ought to have someone treat those burns, but they look much better. Less like you're offering yourself as dinner for these sweet, jolly people." It amazed him how quickly the village had given up as the flames swelled. A second building crashed down, then a third... "It wasn't Hogarth!" despaired Gertrude, rearing a glare at the men of the village. A couple of middle-aged women rushed over and grabbed her arms, urging her to hold her tongue. That combined with the smoldering gaze of an older man from the circle convinced her to give in. She was no longer willing to oppose authority. There were nine men, ten women, and four children in the village. Of those twenty-three people, Gertrude was the only one to claim his innocence. Her husband's honor had been stripped away. She sank to the ground yet again and buried her face in her hands. "I knew something was wrong when Hogarth started having those dreams..." said one of the older women at Gertrude's side. "I know it's hard to accept, Gertrude, but can't you see the signs?" Fellsing stared at the women with an arm on his knee. He supposed it was probably unrelated, but if the dragons' problem was serious, he expected to find evidence of it along the way. Rather than climbing back into his goat's saddle and preparing to depart, he listened carefully for any meaningful connection. (Fellsing's mana: 5/35 Crius' health: 24/30) |

"i'll be fine. i think i've seen enough plants alogn the way that i can use to make some oitment to treat the burns myself." he quickly rose to his feet as he heard the older women speak about dreams. he slowly walked over to her as he tried to figure out the best way to get more information. it was a longshot and he hoped the spine wouldn't mess it up but he knew a way he had to try. "i'm sorry but what dreams are you talking about. please tell us everything you know about it, it is of great importance that you tell us. we were send by the academy to investigate some leads that might hold connection to what happened here." |

"Ah! The Academy!" said one of the old women in awe. Likewise, Gertrude peered up at Crius. Fellsing agreed that his companion's method was wiser than introducing the subject of dragons. "You're representatives of Nalthor Academy?" asked Gertrude, drying her tears with a handkerchief. She didn't give Fellsing any time to object - not that he would've blown their chance for the sake of honesty. "I see... That explains the sprite's magic." "Spine elf," Fellsing corrected almost unconsciously. Gertrude went on without any lapse in her speech. "My husband, Hogarth, started having these terrible nightmares a little over a month ago... Sometimes, he woke in the morning soaked in his own sweat. More often, he couldn't stay asleep at all because he would just snap out of his dreams screaming. We consulted his father, the head of our village. He wasn't able to stop the nightmares." "Right," Fellsing said, scratching his pointy chin. "What sort of nightmares were they?" He secretly hoped they had to do with his wife's nagging rather than anything related to their quest for the dragons, but his wish was rejected by cruel reality. "The dreams were always the same," she explained. "He roamed the wilds late at night while a dark figure stalked at his heels, whispering things in another language. He tried to leave the village yesterday because of something the person from his dream said. I... I didn't let him go." "So he burned down the whole village!" piped in one of the men nearby. Gertrude spun around to retaliate, but the middle-aged women at her sides held her back. "Sounds like a lead, eh, Crius?" remarked Fellsing. That said, he doubted they could do anything for the woman, her husband, or the village; the matter was well above their heads. |

crius softly rubbed his chin as he thought about what was said. it didn't seem that usefull but he couldn't just dissapoint them, hope would keep them going. "it might be related. what we are after displays itself in many way but has yet to reveal his true form, so it's hard to say. it could be that he was controled by somethign through his dreams, or somethign might be chasing him and was just upset that he had fled. either way for what it's worth i doubt you have to worry about what or who caused the fire. but i'm afraid we can't chase the man ourselves. if it is related then this is just a sympton of what we are after, if we find the source the dreams will stop as well and your husband will return. so since nobody here is in any further danger i'm afraid me and my helper need to keep going if we want to find the source fast." havign said that he turned around and walked back to the goats to put his jacket back on and mount the goat. |
