The nine-tailed fox pulled a long strand of blond hair out of her eyes as she stared over her shoulder at Crius. Her body continued to face the trio of elves in the bushes.

"I don't know of any such thing," she said with another playful smirk. "The men who brought this wagon here are searching for an item called the magic hourglass. Perhaps they're related."

The swordsman rose from his crouching position and stepped out of the bushes, weapons at his sides. He spoke up to get the fox's attention.

"Thank you for..." In no time at all, the fox's dark, purple eyes were an inch away from his own. Her hair whipped toward him as she halted. The sound of her gripping his wrists was audible even to Fellsing and Hammerhead, several feet away. Both swords dropped to the ground immediately.

"I'll have a fine necklace today," the ninetails whispered in his ear. She sank her teeth into his throat, rapidly ending what remained of the swordsman's life. Hammerhead nearly burst out of the brush in a fit of insanity, but Fellsing held him back by the arm. It required him to lean precariously over the edge of his goat. To draw the fox any closer to them was to forfeit both of their lives. He dared not take that risk.

"Keep your wits about you," Fellsing cautioned. Just a stone's throw away, the ninetails ripped the swordsman's fingers off one by one. His corpse fell to the ground only after she had collected ten fingers as promised.

as crius heard the swordsman speak, crius turned around to charge at him, but before he could even move a single step the ninetails had already moved towards the swordsman. crius released the handle of his sword again and continued to get the wagon ready to move. normaly he wouldn't act this heartless as someone was killed but now anger filed his heart, the swordsman had dissobeyed crius' demands and not only ended his own life but also risked that of crius. if the ninetails hadn't killed him crius would have. when the wagon was prepared crius started heading back towards fellsing and the goat followed. when he got to the spot where the swordsmans body lay crius crouched and picked up the swords, then he started searching the corpses clothes for anything that could be usefull, important or valluable. once he had collected all of them he took the swordsmans sword and trusted it into the corpses heart before pullign it back out.
with one last angry look at the corpse he spoke loud enough for felsing to hear: "i thought i told all three of you not to get any closer."

he turned his head towards the ninetails and softly spoke: "we will leave now as promised, but i'll always remember you, the majestic golden ninetails. be safe."
having said those words he turned his head again and walked towards felsing.

Fellsing understood the warning. For whatever reason, Crius had been granted the privilege of standing in the ninetails' presence, but the rest of them were still considered trespassers. He wondered if all nine-tailed foxes were such ruthless creatures. As the wagon rolled toward them, the fox reverted to her true form. Her size had increased drastically - by at least five times. Fellsing dared not comment.

Once Crius made it out of the clearing, he attached the spare riding goat to the wagon. He preferred to keep his own free in case the ninetails had a change of heart. The wagon wouldn't be nearly as maneuverable in the forest as a lone goat. Hammerhead climbed into the wagon and buried his face in his hands, mourning the death of his comrade.

"You ought to be a diplomat," Fellsing snickered. "You had that fox eating out of your hand." Morning light flooded the forest in dense rays as they made their way northeast to escape the ninetails' domain. The hammer-wielding elf didn't have much to say except that the wagon was stocked full of water, travel rations, and blankets to get them through the harsh nights of the desert. It seemed that he and his companion had originally planned to cut through the Wing Desert on their way to Eyr.

"We're close to the desert," he reminded Crius. "Want to try our luck?"

crius didn't have to think it over since it would save them time.
"sure with our new supplies we shoudln't have much problems i think. but i would like to ask our friend something now that we have left the forrest."
crius still had all the looted stuff with him but hadn't had time to look through them as he had been steerign the wagon the whoe time. he turned his head towards their passeger and spoke a bit harder to get his attention.
"hey, would you mind telling us what mission made you travel through the forrest?"

Hammerhead dried his tears and cleared his throat.

"The Council of Eyr sent us west to look for an item that was once in the elder's possession, a magic hourglass." The true elf combed his hair forward with his fingers, still trembling from the encounter with the fox. "The diviner we spoke with told us where to find the current owner, so I need to bring the information back to the Council immediately."

"Sounds intriguing," Fellsing replied. It sounded quite a bit like their tuning funnel. "So where is it? Let's go pick it up." And never return it, he thought with a smirk.

crius used the reigns to steer the goats into the desert. as they entered he took of his jacket to avoid sweatign to much.
"since you are heading towards the council after recieving the information it must mean the hourglass is inside or near Eyr. or to far away to reach without reporting back first. either way it seems like our destination still is the elder in Eyr. and don't get me wrong, i didn't take you with us because i like you, but because you'll prove to be usefull. i'm keeping those two swords and two third of the money he had on him since he endangered my life by ignoring my instruction in the face of clear danger."
he hooked the reigns behind his gauntlet and started counting the money the swordsman had had. he turned around quickly and tossed 1 silver and 2 copper to the hammerman.

"Ideally, we would have gone after the hourglass immediately..." Hammerhead continued after a period of silence. "I'm not sure I understand what the diviner said to us, though. It sounded as though she was referring to a temple, yet she called it male."

"And where's this temple?" Fellsing pried. The true elf stared back at him without a reply. Fellsing grunted and rode ahead. The desert sands stretched as far as the eye could see with dunes of various slopes dotting the horizon. The bushes became drier and less common the further they traveled. Cacti sprung out of the silicon mounds with beautiful pink and red flowers. Of course, less pleasant things lurked in the desert sand as well - scorpions, poisonous lizards, desert elephants, and worse. Even in the spring, the heat was enough to turn most men away.

"Let's just get through this crummy desert before I shrivel up," Fellsing said with a scowl.

"sure i'll just attach the 50 running horses i have in my backpack to the wagon so we can reach Eyr in a few hours. you know how long it will take so unless you know a way to make them faster you'll just have to deal with it."
crius wasn't in his useal good mood. the constant complaining had always been working on his nerves but that he could normaly handle, but the constant secrets and mysteries combined with the swordmans actions had placed him in a bad mood. it was made worse when he realized that if the hammer wielder hadn't been so forthcomming with his information he might have killed him to save them some future trouble.

By Fellsing's estimate, they had at least two and a half days of desert extremes ahead of them.

"You're cheery this morning," he sneered back. "Don't take rejection so hard, Crius. There are other foxes in the forest. Try a younger one next time."

"Could you be quiet for a while?" Hammerhead interjected. The spine elf glanced up at the wagon again, losing his unpleasant smirk. What business was it of his?

"Suit yourself," he snapped. Fellsing's goat bleated playfully, skipping over little stones in the sand. The goat was clearly oblivious to the foul change in his attitude. Fellsing relaxed in the saddle and set his sights on a couple of stone pillars inching by in the distance. They were heavily worn by sandstorms past and crumbling in several places. It astounded him that they could stand at all. A dune had formed in the space beyond the pillars. Blocks of stone poked out of the massive dune here and there. Fellsing almost asked the true elf in their company about it, but since his silence was valued so highly, he kept his thoughts private. Hammerhead eyed the crumbling structure as they approached, too.

"How odd... I don't remember ever seeing anything like that here." He pulled out a faded map and circled the southern edge of the Wing Desert with his finger. He held it out to Crius for emphasis. "This map shows all of the desert ruins known to Eyr. It's only about a year old." Fellsing peered up at them again, still brooding.

crius glanced at the map and then started steering the waggon in a wide arc around the pillars. he didn't trust their stability so he wanted to keep some distance in case they collapsed. but the ruins were interesting, if they weren't on the map then either they had been concealed all this time, by sand or magic, or magic made them appear not to long ago. but despite magic becoming more and more of a dailly event in their lives he doubted it was the best explanation in this area that's regulary terrorised by sandstorms.
"if it isn't on the map the someoen left it out on purpose to hide something here, or the ruins themselves have always been hidden by sand up until now, either way it should be worth taking a quick look don't you think?"
crius hopped fellsing would agree because in crius his mind this could be the perfect place for the tunnel funnel to have been hidden. and even if it wasn't if they learned enough about it before they reported their findings they could at least rightfully place their names as the discoverers of a new ruin.
