Mmmmmmmmmmmmm. Posts: 778 Group: Members Member #33 Joined: 16 April 2012 Gender Male	I'VE A little DILEMMA. And I know this might be a weird topic in the versus area. But I don't care I was hoping that one of you might have a scientifically grounded answer? Eurasian Jay VERSUS Magpie Spoiler: click to toggle I've hung peanuts in our garden for the Eurasian Jay. And he/she daily comes (and I LOVE it, this corvid is so lovely to watch) Now. 65% of the time. A magpie comes and attacks it... And I can't stand it. Mostly the Jay dives for cover, hides and flies off. Yesterday I've seen an epic fight in my garden. Where the Jay refused to back down and fought back..But then an other magpie appeared and the jay was forced to retreat. Magpies are very hostile birds. They attack everything.. And especially the Jay. I don't know what issue those magpies have with Jays. But it's annoying. the question: Purely physically speaking. (I know a lot of external factors play a huge part) Is the Jay (Garrulus glandarius) superior? or is the Magpie (Pica pica) superior? since the magpie always launches an attack, it must be pretty confident. But then again: Magpies are arrogant birds the Jay also doesn't back down, but they're less hostile and rather go on the defense than the offensive. EXTRA INFO: 1) physical posture comparison: in this pic you can see the scaled size of both birds. Spoiler: click to toggle The Jay has a slightly bigger posture and is quite clumsy compared to most birds. 2) They are both corvids (from the crow family) 3) The Jay is a forest bird. When on the ground, it hops. Unlike the Magpie, who walks like a human. 4) They're both known for being "cruel" to other little animals/birds. There was an epic fight. (and I'm to blaim; my peanuts make them all go nuts and hysterical) A woodpecker got into a fight with this Jay as they were both lusting after the nuts. A blackbird also joined the fight and it become really chaotic. The blackbird was only aiming towards the Jay. But both birds weren't succesful in driving him away. Then mr. Magpie came and charged (also aimed at the Jay) and they both had a brief aggresive duel. As usually, the Jay decides to fly off for cover and the Magpie dives after him..and looses track.
